4 . As the world sees more and more extreme weather patterns, it’ s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the effects of climate change. It is now a common topic of discussion and it has even found its way into the books we read. Because of this, a genre (类型) called climate fiction, or cli-fi, has found new life.

The term “cli-fi” was first used in 2007 by US climate activist it and writer Dan Boom. As the name suggests, climate fiction refers to stories with a central theme of climate change or global warming. These kinds of books can help us imagine what the world might be like in the future because of major climate change events.

Adeline Johns-Putra is a professor of literature at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool Universityin Suzhou and has edited many books on climate fiction. “It’s part of a pattern,” Johns-Putra told Smithsonian Magazine. “It’s a feedback loop (环), as these books feed into our awareness and that feeds into our demand to read these books.”

The genre is also gaining popularity with high school and college students because it looks at topics that are relevant to what’s really happening today. Also, many cli-fi novels tend to have dystopian (反乌托邦的) themes, which are very popular in young adult novels.

In 2015, cli-fi author Sarah Holding wrote for The Guardian that cli-fi “reconnects young readers with their environment”, which helps them appreciate it more, “especially when today, a large amount of their time is spent in the virtual world”.

Cli-fi has also helped to inspire students to pursue science majors, with some universities even offering courses specifically focusing on climate fiction.

“These books aren’t going to save the world in any straight form or way,” Johns-Putra commented. “But they’re certainly going to help us think about how the world gets saved.”

As Atwood wrote in her dystopian cli-fi novel Madd Addam, “People need such stories, because however dark, a darkness with voices in it is better than a silent void (空间).”

1. What is cli-fi?
A.Stories about country life.
B.Stories with dystopian themes.
C.Stories about the future.
D.Stories about climate change.
2. What effect does cli-fi have on young students?
A.It raises their awareness of the real world.
B.It encourages them to write their own cli-fi.
C.It teaches them to appreciate what they have.
D.It makes them more interested in the virtual world.
3. What does Atwood think of cli-fi?
A.They are too dark for people.
B.They tend to make people feel empty.
C.They should involve different voices.
D.They can get people to think about their reality.
4. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?
A.To introduce a genre of fiction.
B.To warn readers of future climate crises.
C.To introduce a famous US climate activist.
D.To inspire students to choose science majors.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。真实的科学为科幻小说提供了基本的原理,文章给科幻小说作家提出了关于科幻小说写作要注意的事项。

5 . Science fiction writers create imaginary worlds. The way things work in your imaginary worlds will be based on actual science. So it’s important for you to be familiar with the scientific principles and inventions that are related to your creation. For example, if you’re writing about human living on a planet with zero gravity, then you need to know the effects of zero gravity on the human body.

Then you have to figure out the exact rules of your imaginary worlds. And you have to follow them. If humans are able to breathe underwater in Chapter 1, your character can’t drown in a swimming pool in Chapter 3. The issue here is maintaining your readers’ trust. That means the reader is willing to pretend along with you. If you start out with an ordinary detective novel and then throw in someone breathing under water in the 6th chapter, you will pull the readers out of their imagination. The same thing happens if you change the rules halfway.

Part of your preparation work for the novel is to map out its worlds in great detail. You should decide the following issues: the history of the world, the geography, what possibilities it offers, how everything works in this new reality, and how all of these factors affect the way your characters think, feel, and react to things. You don’t have to tell your readers all the rules in the first chapter. But you have to let readers know enough to understand what’s going on. This also allows you to work out logical problems and contradictions before you start writing.

When you are writing, remember to make it feet real. You are inviting readers to visit a new world. They will want to be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste what it’ s like. Whether your novel is about a world without disease or an undiscovered planet, help your readers feel like they’re actually there.

1. What’ s the relationship between actual science and science fiction?
A.Science fiction promotes the development of actual science.
B.Science fiction often reflects the development of actual science.
C.Actual science provides basic principles for science fiction.
D.Actual science limits the imagination described in science fiction.
2. What does the third paragraph focus on?
A.Part of the preparation work for science fiction writing.B.The different types of novels.
C.The detail in the first chapter of science fiction.D.The reality of science fiction.
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.It is necessary to do some scientific experiments before writing science fiction.
B.Readers of science fiction actually pretend the writers’ rules are true.
C.The target readers of the passage are young scientists.
D.It is great to leave some contradictions in your science fiction.
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.How to do scientific researchB.How to write science fiction
C.What to expect from science fictionD.How to raise interest in science

6 . Reading poetry can be challenging, but learning how to carefully move through a poem is also very rewarding.     1     However, by following the tips below, anyone can have the deeply rewarding experience of connecting to a great poem.

Feel various sounds. Poetry is made to be heard. You’re probably familiar with rhyming poems but there are many sound elements that poets use not only to make the poem sound beautiful, but to enhance the meaning or intention of a poem.     2     What do you notice about how it sounds? How does the sound enhance an overall theme, mood, or message?

3     Many poems may use words or reference places or times in history that may be unfamiliar to you. Be curious enough to look up all the words and references by various means. You should also gather information about the poet and his life background. All of these can offer essential context to bring the poem to life.

Analyze the figurative (比喻的) language in the poem. Figurative language could be words that are repeated often in the poem or words that rhyme in each stanza (节). To get more into the figurative meaning of the poem, you should look at how the poet uses literary methods like metaphor (隐喻), simile, and imagery.     4

Finally, you don’t have to fully understand it. If you like the way a poem sounds when you read it aloud, but don’t know what it “means”, that’s OK!     5     The great thing about art is that it can have lots of different meanings or seemingly no meaning at all and can sill be enjoyed. The same goes for poetry.

A.Consult the dictionary.
B.Curiosity kills the confusion.
C.They are often used to add deeper meaning to the poem.
D.Maybe it makes sense in a way that you can’t necessarily express.
E.Once you find a poem that interests you, read it out loud several times.
F.You should also pay attention to how the poet opens and closes the poem.
G.Unlike painting and music, poetry requires much extra effort to harvest its full effects.

Sue looked out the window. An old ivy vine(常青藤),going bad at the roots, climbed half way up the wall. The cold breath of autumn had stricken leaves from the plant until its branches, almost bare(光秃秃的),hung on the bricks.

“What is it,dear?”asked Sue.

“Leaves. On the plant. When the last one falls I must go,too.

“Oh,what have old ivy leaves to do with your getting well?Try to eat some soup now,”said Sue.”And,I must call Mister Behrman up to be my model for my drawing.Don’t try to move until I come back.”

The next morning,Johnsy and Sue were surprised to find there yet stood against the wall one ivy leaf after the beating rain and fierce wind that blew through the night. It was the last one on the vine.It was still dark green at the center. But its edges were colored with the yellow. It hung bravely from the branch about seven meters above the ground.

Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how bad I was.It is wrong to want to die.You may bring me a little soup now.”said Johnsy.

And then they found a lantern, still lighted. And a ladder that had been moved from its place. And art supplies and a painting board with green and yellow colors mixed on it.”

8 . A widow with a fish to fry

A YOUNG WOMAN WALKS INTO THE BATHROOM of her Beijing apartment. She plans to ask her husband about their coming vacation, but notices he's facedown in their bathtub. Jokingly, she asks him if he's trying to wash his hair. No answer. He's dead.

These first pages of An Yu's novel, Braised Pork, sound like a domestic thriller. The dead husband . A fancy apartment. And a wife who shows that even if she's shocked by the unexpected death, she wasn't happy with her marriage to begin with. Yu writes, “He had betrayed(背叛)and deserted her."

But then, as she waits for the ambulance, Jia Jia discovers a picture of a strange fish-man left near her bathtub. She remembers her husband describing the creature on a trip to Tibet—it had shown up in a dream. Jia Jia doesn't know it yet, but the drawing will take her miles from home, changing what she knows to be true about herself. It's this experience that changes Braised Pork into an original narrative(叙事)one that doesn't fit into any genre(体裁).

As JiaJia picks up the pieces of her life, she wonders how much of herself she suppressed (压 抑)to please her husband. She was once an artist, but her husband discouraged her from running after her dream. Now she can explore those desires alone, though .

ANOTHER AUTHOR might have chosen to follow a young widow on a journey of finding love after loss. But 28-year-old Yu smartly decides not to. Instead, she uses Jia Jia as a way to explore the anxiety of contemporary womanhood. Jia Jia does want to find love again, which is only a small part of the story. Yu leaves room for her to begin a more material search: uncovering the meaning behind the picture beside her husband's dead body.

There are some images that make us so uncomfortable. It's impossible to look away from them. For JiaJia, it's the fish-man at first, and then more memories of the past, which interrupt her present. In Braised Pork, Yu raises questions about why we keep an eye on those moments-and how they might relate to the company we wish for.

1. What's the genre of the novel Braised Pork?
A.Mystery.B.Narrative.
C.Domestic thriller.D.None of the above.
2. What kind of person would you say Jia Jia is before her husband's death?
A.lonely and suppressed.B.innocent but unlucky.
C.humorous and independent.D.talented and passionate.
3. From the last two paragraphs, we know ________.
A.Jia Jia and Yu both wish for company
B.Jia Jia would rather live in the past than in the future
C.Yu uses Jia Jia to explore the anxiety of contemporary womanhood
D.The novel is mainly about a young widow finding her true love after loss
4. Which of the following is NOT right according to the text?
A.Yu uses uncomfortable images to catch reader's attention.
B.The picture of a strange fish-man will take Jia Jia away from home .
C.Jia Jia can take up art again after her husband's unexpected death.
D.Jia Jia isn't satisfied with her marriage due to her husband's betrayal.

9 . We all like fantasy stories, and grow up reading and listening to fantasies. These tales fuel our imaginations, and satisfy our longings for adventures. The most interesting thing about fantasies is that their plots involve magical beasts and heroes, animal creatures talking like humans, and other things we can’t see in real life. Also, fantasies have a distinguished writing style, with freedom of expression.

Toy Fantasy

In toy fantasy stories, narrators(叙述者)bring their beloved toys to life that can live, talk, think, breathe and behave like human beings. You would see modern toy fantasies in a picture book format. Representative works are A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh and Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio.

Animal Fantasy

The animal fantasy tells tales about animals behaving like human beings, experiencing emotions, and having the ability to talk. However, animals in fantasies hold their various animal characteristics, too. Examples include The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, Charlotte's Web by E. B. White, and The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter which influences children around the world.

Magical Fantasy

In a magical fantasy, you see a character having magical powers, or a strange magical object becomes the subject of the story. Stories of this type began widely spreading long ago, including Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and William Steig’s Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.

Modern Folktales

Modern folktales are types of fantasy that narrators tell in a traditional tale accompanying some typical parts, such as strong conflict, little description of characters, and sometimes magical elements. These tales come before all others and are popular, as authors throughout history, have written them. Hans Christian Andersen has written several tales of this category including The Nightingale, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina.

10 . When the novelist Luis Alberto Urrea was 14 or 15, he took a trip deep into Mexico. He was born in Tijuana to a Mexican father and a white American mother before moving just across the border and eventually into the San Diego suburbs. But his father thought he was becoming “too American”, and took him on a 27-hour journey to Mazatian. Along the way, his father gave him a paperback copy of The Godfather and told him it would change his life. “I don’t think he was trying to make a case for us being criminals,” Urrea says, “but he really felt this incredible connection to the family and the traditions and the honor for the old country, as people were making their way in the U.S.”

In his new novel The House of Broken Angels, Urrea has written his own take on the Godfather story with a Mexican-American Don Corleone figure at its center. The story takes place over two days, as Big Angel de la Cruz buries his mother and celebrates his final birthday party on earth; he knows he’s dying, and he’s gathered his extended family around him for a noisy and lively goodbye.

The idea was inspired by the final birthday party of Urrea’s elder brother three years ago. “Everybody was jammed in his backyard, and there was a DJ and people dancing and consuming a serious amount of American junk food — they didn’t want Mexican food, they wanted KFC and pizza. I thought, where are the tacos, dude? And my brother sat in his little chair in the middle of it. People were coming to him and kneeling, and they would thank him and kiss his hand or touch his head and tell him all the ways he had changed their lives.”

Urrea’s brother died of cancer within two weeks at 74, and the heartbreaking event haunted the author. He considered writing a memoir(回忆录)about it—“I was thinking about Truman Capote, when he did those tiny books about Christmas and Thanksgiving.” But his wife encouraged him to aim bigger. When he found himself seated next to the writer Jim Harrison at a dinner event, he shared the story, and Harrison said, “Sometimes God hands you a novel. You have to write it.” Urrea thought to himself “Marching orders from Jim Harrison―this is good stuff. A kid from Tijuana doesn’t get that very often.

The House of Broken Angels is a celebration of the Mexican-American family, but it also includes moments of frustration with this country’s treatment of the immigrant group. Before he got too sick to work, Big Angel worked in an office and drank coffee from a cup that read BOSS. “Yeah, the employees all got the message,” Urrea writes. “The Mexican-American was calling himself their boss.” In a grocery store, a woman screams at two of his family members that they’ll be kicked out of the country soon. “I had to bite down on the bitterness of my rage(愤怒), man!” Urrea says. “I was having some pretty serious response to Donald Trump’s confusing and empty talk. But you know, it may have shocked a lot of the United States to hear this kind of empty talk and this bald-faced racialism of politics all of a sudden, but to us, this stuff isn’t a surprise?”

“I really wanted to write a tribute to my brother, to my family and to us, but it’s also a love song to the country,” Urrea says. “I think people have this weird, horrible view... that immigrants are evil snakes. People don’t understand that immigration is truly a statement of love for this country, whatever the country represents. People want to be here and work.” And with persistence, they become the boss.

1. Why did Urrea’s father give him the book The Godfather?

A.Capote was good at writing tiny books
