2 . The Norwegian novelist, poet and playwright Jon Fosse was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Oct 5, “for his innovative plays and prose (散文) which give voice to the unsayable,” in the words of the prize committee.
Born in 1959 in Haugesund, Fosse grew up on a small farm in western Norway. He started writing poems and stories at the age of 12. But it was his plays that made him famous. Now, his 40-some plays have been published.
Unlike many traditional plays that focus on plots, characters and conflicts, Fosse’s works instead present “tension (紧张) of emotions”, noted The Paper. To create such an atmosphere, the language Fosse uses is unique and brief. The chairman of the Nobel literature committee praised “Fosse’s sensitive language, which probes the limits of words”. Through his works, Fosse carefully explores deep themes like aging, love, death and art. For example, his first play Someone Is Going to Come tells the story of a man and a woman who seek solitude (独处) in a remote seaside home while the novel Morning and Evening traces a character’s life from birth to death. When asked what he aims to convey to readers through his writing, Fosse said he hopes to show a feeling of peace. “I hope they can find a kind of peace in, or from, my writing,” he said in a statement sent through his Norwegian publisher.
Fosse’s unique style has helped him win many prizes and international recognition. In 2010, Fosse won the International Ibsen Award. The prize committee commented, like all important writers of drama, Fosse forces the theater and its audiences to think in new ways. He is the poet of the unknown.”

4 . Theodore Roosevelt took a determined approach to life, which can be summarized as “do what you can with what you have, where you are.” In other words, when you are seeking success, use every available resource. Theodore Roosevelt had no time for quitters (轻易放弃的人) or complainers. He would never accept that something was impossible. Every task, every goal, and every dream can be completed. All you needed to do is to make a start. Use what you have around you to take your first step. Do not make excuses for not doing something. Instead, give all the reasons for setting out to complete the task. There is always an alternative way of approaching a. project. Giving up is not one of those alternatives.
Neither quitters nor complainers achieve success. They continuously find ways of doing anything. When you are chasing success, don’t give yourself excuses. Instead, challenge yourself. Making the best of what you are given is positive. Achieving success through working to find different ways of doing a task or overcoming an obstacle (障碍物) will make you feel good. Your self-belief and confidence will be improved, and you will feel able to deal with whatever else comes along.
Theodore Roosevelt was a great supporter of self-discipline. He believed that if we could not control our own lives, how could we lead others? When you put self-discipline on yourself, you remove indecision and replace it with purposefulness. You become an example to others, which adds to your self-esteem (自尊). What must we do, therefore, to boost our self-esteem? Most importantly, see the positive in everything. There will be positives in negative experiences. Even in the negative, there are lessons to be learned and experiences to store away for the future. If others are to believe in you, then you must believe in yourself.
Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th and youngest US President. He achieved high office as a result of being a tough political operator and a man blessed with experience and wisdom. He was determined, self-esteem, and filled with self-belief and a sense of purpose. All of his achievements came from his life lessons.

6 . Auerbach is one of Britain’s most famous painters, with works in every major national gallery. He has been a significant member of the post-war artists, including Bacon, Moore and Freud, whose creative originality made the UK a major pulse (脉搏) for art.
He has also, over the decades, invented a language of art that is recognisably his own, stretching beyond any comfort zone, shocking himself and, in turn, the viewer. A special structural formality in his portraits exists alongside free-flowing marks arising from intense observation. A must-see exhibition of nine paintings and 11 drawings, it’s small and, as it is in a commercial gallery, completely free.
Auerbach is today’s Grand Old Master of British Art, famously spending 365 days a year in the studio searching through paint for hard truths to give a picture of the human form. A personal connection exists between us as I took his photograph in his studio, marking our friendship lasting almost 40 years.
During the pandemic (流行病), for the first time in 70 years, Auerbach stopped having art models: so using himself. He stayed alone in his brown cave of a studio in Camden, North London and turned to self-portraits. Perhaps this is the ultimate portrait of the artist as an old man, as he explores his own face in a way he had previously avoided. “I didn’t find actual formal components (组成部分) of my head all that interesting when I was younger and less tired. Now that I’ve got bags under my eyes, things are sagging and so on, there’s more material to work with,” he writes.
Opposite to the belief that old age may not inspire great works, Auerbach’s late career proves otherwise. Like Titian, who influenced Rembrandt, Rubens, and Velázquez, Auerbach’s powerful expressiveness is shown in his painting. His new works give an example of the idea of late greats, proving his artistic skills even in his later years.

“Mamba mentality is you’re going, you’re competing, you’re not worried about the end result,” Bryant said. “It’s all about focusing on the process and trusting in the hard work when it matters most.”
Off the court, Bryant was known as a successful businessman, an Oscar-winning filmmaker, and a proud father of four daughters.

8 . Many artists draw with pens and brushes, but few “paint” with knives. Wang Jing, a woman from Shenyang city in northeast China’s Liaoning Province, has been engaged in this art form for 27 years.
In 1995, Wang was inspired by an accidental cut by a knife on a piece of red paper, which left a white line, and believed that she may have created something out of the ordinary. Using knives and paper, she then completed a painting of a pair of peacocks that later became a source of motivation for her 27-year endeavor.
Unlike traditional paintings, onto which colors are “added”, “knife painting” requires the painter to use blades (刀锋) to take away colors on specially made coated paper. “Knife painters” apply varied pressure on the paper in different directions to create different colors and tones. “Painting on paper with knives is a delicate art and each line in the painting is as thin as a hair,” said Wang, adding that once the marks are left on the paper, they cannot be covered, so it requires the painter to be completely absorbed in the work.
The novel art form was known to few people just after Wang created it. Even Wang herself was not expecting to make it something big at the beginning. But thanks to her huge enthusiasm for the art form, she has persisted with it for the past 27 years. So far, she has completed hundreds of paintings about auspicious Chinese culture, figures, landscape, flowers and birds, of which her favorite is a 2.8-meter-long painting that depicts 20 lifelike egrets (白鹭). Wang said she will continue working in the craft and make it known across the world.

9 . Malaria has been a deadly problem for humans since ancient times. Usually, people get malaria when infected mosquitoes bite them. Countless people have died from the disease. Thankfully, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou found an effective drug called qinghaosu.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tu’s discovery. In 1969, Tu became the director of a national project to develop a drug against malaria. Her team took a unique approach. They studied books about classical Chinese medicine. After reading more than 2,000 old remedies (疗 法), Tu and her team collected over 600 plants and listed almost 380 possible remedies for malaria.
One remedy, which is 1,600 years old, uses sweet wormwood as a treatment. Tu found it effective and tried to extract the qinghaosu from it in order to make a drug. The extraction failed at first, so Tu returned to the classical books again and finally found a way. She used a low-temperature method to extract the qinghaosu and finally succeeded in 1972.
After her team showed that qinghaosu could treat malaria in mice and monkeys, Tu and two of her colleagues volunteered to test the drug on themselves before testing on human patients. It turned out that qinghaosu was safe and all patients in the test recovered. Gradually, qinghaosu became the first-line treatment for malaria recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), saving millions of lives around the world.

10 . In one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, Saudi Arabia-ranked No. 51 in the world-took down two-time champion Argentina 2-1 on Tuesday.
The result was also a moment of long-awaited approval (认可)for Saudi manager Hervé Renard, a journeyman coach who has built a decorated career on soccer’s road less traveled. A 54-year-old Frenchman who wears tight white dress shirts, Renard has made it his feature to turn around national teams in Africa and Asia.
“Football is not for the dreamer, ” Renard said. “If you work very well and play very well, the results will arrive. ”
Renard was mostly happy to work hard as an unknown, far from the game’s most popular leagues, while he waited for those results to arrive. Renard landed in Saudi, shortly after the team was kicked out of the 2018 World Cup. The low point came in the opening match when it lost 5-0 to Russia.
By November, however, Renard had changed the Falcons, as the team is known, into a well-trained side that seized its limited opportunities, rode its luck, and bent without breaking for the last half-hour of the game.
After the game, Renard was the first to remind his group that once their 20-minute celebration was over, they still had everything to achieve at this tournament. “You think you are one of the best teams in the world?”he added. “Keep your feet on the ground. ”
