3 . As a little girl growing up in Colombia, Diana longed to explore the universe and gain more understanding of it. Her dad thought that being able to speak a second language would give her an advantage. He suggested she live with her aunt in Miami while going to school. Only 17 years old at the time, she accepted his suggestion.
With just $300 in her pocket, Diana took a series of housekeeping jobs to put herself through community college and later the University of Florida. In addition to learning English, she studied aerospace engineering. Sometimes she had to take six buses just to get to class. Other days she was cleaning bathrooms to continue her studies. But Diana saw everything coming her way as an opportunity.
Diana applied to the NASA Academy in her senior year of college, and was the first immigrant Latina woman in the academy. NASA hired her that year, and in 2009, she became a telecom systems engineer for the Curiosity Rover (探测器) that landed successfully on Mars in 2012. During this mission, she developed a dust removal tool to help scientists better explore the Mars’ surface, which earned her recognition as one of the 20 most influential Latinos (拉丁族裔) in the technology industry. Since then, Diana has only kept setting the bar (设定标准) higher. In her second mission, it took her team of engineers two years of long days and nights to create the robotic arm for the Perseverance Rover that would bring back soil samples from the Red Planet to learn whether there once was life there.
Right now, her mission is to help more Latina women realize they, too, can be successful in the exploration of science and technology. Last week, she hosted NASA’s first-ever Spanish-language live broadcast for Perseverance’s arrival on Mars and it gained more than 2.5 million views on YouTube.

5 . Remembering Maki Kaji, the “Father of Sudoku”
Maki Kaji, a Japanese man who was known as the “Father of Sudoku”, has passed away from cancer at the age of 69. Mr. Kaji was a puzzle lover who helped turn Sudoku from a simple number challenge into a game played around the world.
Though Mr. Kaji finished high school, he dropped out of college. After Mr. Kaji left college, he started Japan’s first puzzle magazine in 1980 with two of his friends. They named their magazine company Nikoli, which has become very popular over the years. It publishes puzzles and books for people all over the world. But Sudoku is probably the puzzle that most people think of when they remember Mr. Kaji.
While it’s not clear where the original number puzzle came from, Mr. Kaji is the one who gave it the name “Sudoku” and made it popular. By 2004, it was one of the most-played puzzles in the world. Now millions of people play Sudoku every day. Nikoli says that roughly 200 million people from about 100 countries have played the puzzle. People even compete in a Sudoku world championship every year.
Sudoku isn’t just popular—it’s also a huge moneymaker, bringing in millions and millions of dollars. But Mr. Kaji never made much money from the puzzle, since he didn’t protect Sudoku legally. He said that didn’t bother him, since he focused on the pleasure it brought for people.
Mr. Kaji believed the secret of making a great puzzle was to make it easy for anyone to play. He said discovering a new puzzle was “like finding treasure”. It’s that kind of spirit that has left many people in the puzzle world so sad to hear that Mr. Kaji has passed away. Puzzle experts and fans around the world have thanked Mr. Kaji for his work, and honored him as a true lover of puzzles.

6 . Most 5-year-olds are just learning their ABC’s. Kindergarteners are just learning to read and write but one little girl from the UK has actually written a book that was published in January 2022.
Bella-Jay Dark from Weymouth, is the world’s youngest female to be published and was awarded the title by Guinness World Records. Her book, The Lost Cat tells the story of Snowy, a cat who got lost after going outside alone at night. She hopes the book will teach children not to go outside at night alone. The book was published by Ginger Fyre Press and has sold over 1,000 copies.
While many adult writers find inspiration for their books from life experiences, Bella’s creative vision actually came from one of her drawings. Bella’s deciding to write a book wasn’t much a surprise to her mom Chelsie Syme who said that her daughter has been writing short stories since age three. Bella spent around five days writing the story and did all of the illustrations except for one picture that her older sister Lacie-May drew.
Syme was surprised that the book turned out as well as it did. But how do you get a child’s homemade book published? Syme and her husband took Bella’s book to a book fair and found a publisher willing to take a chance on it. Syme helped Bella with proofing copies and making necessary changes.
To earn the Guinness World Record title of The World’s Youngest Published Author, female, the book has to be published by a commercial publishing house and have at least 1,000 copies printed and sold. Bella’s book met the criteria. The record was previously held by 6-year-old Dorothy Straight in 1964. Nils van der Poel
Sweden’s Nils van der Poel was already the record holder for the men’s 10,000m speed skating, but showed that he can beat even his own record. He finished with a time of 12 minutes and 30.74 seconds, shattering his own previous record of 12:32.95 set in February 2021.

France’s Johan Clarey took home the silver medal in the men’s downhill alpine(高山) skiing, and at 41 years and 30 days old, he is the oldest Olympic medalist in alpine skiing. “When you are a medalist, whether you are 20 or 41, it doesn’t matter; it’s just an Olympic medal and this is the best feeling. The record of the oldest is not that I don’t care, but is not the most important point,” Clarey told Eurosport after the race on 7 February 2022.
