During World War I,countless soldiers were able to return home because of the protection provided by the heavy helmet.
A young officer in the U. S. Army witnessed the effectiveness of the helmet and realized its potential in a postwar industrial world. In 1919, Edward W.Bullard returned from the war to the family business, which was founded by his father Edward D. Bullard in 1898. He began developing ideas for affordable safety helmets that would protect miners. While the metal helmet was ideal for wartime conditions, it was not suitable for the mining industry. It was too big for miners to work underground and move through tight places. Plus, the cost was high So he chose to use a kind of heavy duck canvas(帆布), which was then formed to fit the human head with steam, thus named Hard Boiled Hat.He attached leather brims(帽檐) to it, and painted it black, so it would hold up to everyday wear in dirty, dangerous mines.
The hard hat was the first commercially available head protection device. Now worn by millions of workers, Bullard's hard hat revolutionized the safety-product industry, earning him a spot in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. At first, wearing a hard hat was a choice, not a requirement. That changed, however, during construction of the Hoover Dam, along the Colorado River in 1931. For the first time, employers required workers to wear hard hats. Now headquartered in Cynthiana, Kentucky,E. D. Bullard Co. is a leading manufacturer of high-quality personal protective equipment and systems worldwide, including a wide range of safety helmets. Edward W. Bullard has an eye on the future. The company plans to introduce a newline of Bullard hard hats for the industrial market.

Can staying up late make you fat? A growing body of research has suggested that poor sleep quality is linked to an increased risk of obesity (肥胖症). But a new study found that it’s not the sleep loss that leads to obesity, but rather that overweight can cause poor sleep. The researchers discovered their findings in a very small worm, called C.elegans.
Study co-author David Raizen stressed that while these findings in worms may not translate directly to humans, C. elegans offers a good model for studying humans' sleep. Like all other animals that have nervous systems, they need sleep. But unlike humans, who have complex neural circuitry (神经回路) and are difficult to study, a C. elegans has only 302 nerve cells, one of which scientists know for certain is a sleep regulator.
In humans, people who get fewer than six hours of sleep per night are more likely to be obese. Moreover, starvation in humans, fruit flies, and worms has been shown to affect sleep, indicating that it is regulated, at least in part, by nutrient availability. However, the way in which sleeping and eating work in tandem (协同地) has remained unclear.
The researchers genetically changed C.elegans to “turn off" a nerve cell that controls sleep. These worms could still eat, breathe, and reproduce, but they lost their ability to sleep. With this nerve cell turned off,the researchers saw a severe drop in ATP levels, which is the body's energy currency. “That suggests that sleep is an attempt to conserve energy; it's not actually causing the loss of energy,"Raizen explained.
The researchers knocked out the KIN-29 gene to create sleepless worms, and the mutant (突变的) C.elegans accumulated much fat. They assumed that the KIN-29 mutants did not sleep is because they were unable to release their fat.To test this guess, the researchers again controlled the KIN-29 mutant worms, this time expressing a chemical substance that freed their fat. With that operation, the worms were again able to sleep.
8. What did the new study focus on?A.The risk of suffering obesity. |
B.The way our body consumes energy. |
C.The link between obesity and sleep loss. |
D.The cause for poor sleep and obesity. |
A.Obesity. | B.Nutrition. |
C.Starvation. | D.Sleep. |
A.To monitor its sleep quality. |
B.To regulate the change of ATP. |
C.To confirm the function of sleep. |
D.To find out factors affecting energy conservation. |
A.That their body fat fails to be freed normally. |
B.That their ATP level may be greatly raised. |
C.That their brain signals for sleeping go wrong. |
D.That their KIN-29 gene is knocked out quickly. |
On May 31, a key meeting of the Communist Party of China unveiled a policy that would allow all couples to have up to three children.
The move is expected to maximize the population's role in driving economic and social growth. The three -child policy is also expected to prevent the decline in the nation's birthrate and deal with the challenge of a rapidly aging population,China Daily reported.
China's annual number of newborns has fallen for four years in a row.The country's total birthrate(the average number of children born to each woman)stood-at 1.3 in 2020. The number is below the rate of 2.1 that would maintain a stable population, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The declining birthrate has also brought a sharp increase in the proportion of the population aged 60 or above, rising from 10.3 percent to 18.7 percent in the past decade. An increasingly elderly population will cause a lack of young labor force. Therefore,it's not good for economic growth, according to Chen Youhua,a professor at Nanjing University.
In fact, the new birth policy is a step to further relax the family planning policy. The one-child policy was introduced in the 1970s and aimed to control the fast growing population. Then in 2013 China allowed couples to have second child if either parent was an only child, and three years later, all couples were allowed to have two children.
However, not all people have shown their support for this latest policy. Many couples complained about the rising costs of raising a child. A netizen named Qinfeng commented,"High cost of education and both the physical and mental exhaustion stopped me from having more than one child." Also, many women hesitate to give birth because that could mean sacrificing their career prospects, according to Mu Guangzong, a professor at Peking University.
In that case, Mu noted that it is better to take supporting measures with the three-child policy, such as more preferential policies for couples that would ease their parental burden.
12. What might NOT be the main cause for the new policy?A.To increase the population's role in economic and social development. |
B.To maintain a stable population. |
C.To keep the birth rate at 1.3. |
D.To address the challenge of the aging population. |
A.China's annual number of newborns has fallen for decades. |
B.In 2013.Chinese government allowed all couples to have two children. |
C.Sacrificing women's career prospects contributes to their willingness to bear more children. |
D.Chinese government has loosened its decades-long family planning policy in recent years. |
A.favorable. | B.powerful. |
C.contradictory. | D.neutral |
A.To show the population's role in driving economic and social growth. |
B.To introduce the new family size policy. |
C.To share his concerns about birthrate and aging population problem. |
D.To issue an appeal for easing couples' parental burden. |
