Malaysia is a country of contrasts — a mix of different architecture, attractive parks and modern tall buildings, and a unique landscape.
Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia’s capital and largest city has much to offer travelers. Perhaps best known for the Petronas Twin Towers, KL is a very popular tourist destination (目的地). It is also considered one of the best shopping destinations in Southeast Asia. Its distinct, modern, Asian, and Malay architecture flows through the city, giving it a unique look you don’t usually find in other Southeast Asia capitals.
George Town
The older part has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site — but George Town is just as famous for its food as it is for its architecture. While George Town’s port and waterfront area is a tourist’s favorite, there’s much more to see and do here. The city’s tallest building is home to the U-shaped Rainbow Skywalk, an outdoor glass viewing platform (平台) set 68 floors up in the air.
Gunung Mulu National Park
The park attracts visitors from all over Asia who come here for the natural beauty that caused this place to be admitted on UNESCO World Heritage list. The park’s main attractions are, however, its caves and the millions of bats (蝙蝠). Sarawak Chamber is the largest cave in the world.
Cameron Highlands
The Cameron Highlands is a hilly region with a long tradition of tea growing on the mountainside. For an inside look into the agricultural and farming practices in Malaysia, the Mardi’s Agro Technology Park is an unexpectedly fun destination. Or visit The Time Tunnel, where you can see recreated rooms and shops from the early 20th century, play board games, and see photographs from pre-war days.

81-year-old Paul Harvey became well-known last September after his son Nick had recorded his two-minute piece from four notes—F natural, A, D, and B natural—and posted it on Twitter.
Nick posted the piece online to show how musical ability can survive memory loss and Paul won the hearts of the British nation when he played the piano from his home in Sussex live on the television.
To mark a year since he played his composition, Paul was invited to conduct the BBC Phiharmonic orchestra(管弦乐队) playing two of his compositions at the studio in Salford. He spent an emotional afternoon with the orchestra, during which he conducted both Four Notes, while his son Nick played the piano, and an older composition of his called Where’s the Sunshine.
Paul, a former music teacher and classical pianist, said. “It was magical, it was very, very special to work with such wonderful musicians. It made me feel alive, I couldn’t believe that an orchestra was playing my music and I was standing in front of it conducting them.”
Five years ago, Paul moved into sheltered accommodation as part of his dementia(痴呆症) care.
Nick, who joined Paul on the trip—organized by Music For Dementia—had seen his dad “come alive again” since the video of him playing piano went online.
He said, “His short term memory is generally shot to pieces but when big events like this happen it’s like a branding iron on his brain. From my experience with dad, the right piece of music at the right time can be absolutely incredible. For the first time in years he has got active again. It really brought him back to life again.”
Campaign Director at Music for Dementia, Grace Meadows said. “Seeing Paul performing beyond his dementia and having the contact with the musicians was a wonderful thing. It was very emotional.”

The truest explanation of recycling involves taking a material, melting(融化) it down, and turning it back into itself over and over. This can be done with glass and metal, which can both be remelted and reformed into bottles or cans forever. This is a closed-loop(闭环) system, so it’s very desirable. On the other hand, some materials slowly degrade(降解) over time, meaning they can be reformed maybe once or twice, but after a while the chemical composition of the original substance has changed and it can no longer be turned back into what it once was. This is called downcycling(降级回收).
The downcycling of plastic is one of the serious issues surrounding this material. For example, plastic water or soda bottles are seldom turned back into bottles. The other is the fact that plastic never biodegrades(生物降解). Many materials newspaper included, will biodegrade at the end of their lives. When paper enters the environment, given exposure to the air, it breaks down, leaving the world undamaged. Plastic, on the other hand, photodegrades(光降解), and this is very concerning. As discussed earlier, in the process of photodegrading, wind, sun, and water break plastic down into smaller and smaller particles(颗粒) that will cause great damage to the ocean ecosystem.
Finally, there is concern about heating food in plastic containers. Avoid reheating food in plastic containers in the microwave, and stop covering food with plastic wrap. Storing cool food in plastic containers isn’t as big a concern, but avoid heating food and plastic together to eliminate the possibility of plastic into your food.
So the disadvantages to plastic are that it can’t really be recycled in the true meaning of the term, it will never disappear from our environment because it can’t biodegrade, and it is a vehicle to deliver dangerous chemicals into our food chains.
8. What is a satisfying recycling system?A.It’s easy to find alternative metals. | B.Its process is an open-loop system. |
C.Materials can be reused over and again. | D.Composition of materials can be changed. |
A.The threat to oceans. | B.The impact on foods. |
C.The process of breaking down. | D.The pollution of the atmosphere. |
A.Assess. | B.Remove. | C.Weight. | D.Reduce. |
A.Positive. | B.Indifferent. | C.Negative. | D.Unclear. |
Being an early bird, or the opposite night owl (夜猫子), is usually not something that is thought of as being highly under our control. Some people seem to sleep early while others get a second wind and tend to sleep late. This internal clock is a person’s unique internal timekeeper and the body’s own master controller of many functions. Most obvious is our sleep patterns; however, it also plays a role in our eating patterns, hormone levels, and maybe even our mood.
A recent study looked at whether the body clock is related to levels of physical activity. Using a watch-like device that measures movement, over 5,000 participants’ activity levels were collected for two weeks. After considering some factors that may explain differences, such as education or background health conditions, they found that night owls, as compared to morning types, had up to 60 to 90 fewer minutes per day of activity.
For those with a more of an “eveningness” type, jobs or other demands on time may mean that a morning alarm is sounding well before their natural wake time. As a result, a night owl type may be starting the day relatively “jet lagged” (有时差感的) —feeling out of step with their body due to being awake when the body would prefer to be asleep.
We should emphasize that this study does not tell us that being a night owl is the cause of lower physical activity. It only shows a connection between being an early bird or night owl and certain conditions. In this study, we only considered two factors —sleep patterns and activity. Using your eat-sleep cycle to your advantage as much as possible to be active is probably the best advice. Are you someone who feels ready and clear first thing in the morning? That may be the best time to get those steps in. More energy in the evening? Then scheduling that walk for after dinner may be best.
12. What do we know about the internal clock?A.It motivates people to sleep early. | B.It keeps a person careful about time. |
C.It affects multiple functions of the body. | D.It masters the patterns of mood and eating. |
A.An early bird received higher education. | B.A night owl had lower physical movement. |
C.An early bird had more reasonable activity levels. | D.A night owl had better background health conditions. |
A.Uneasy. | B.Natural. | C.Energetic. | D.Embarrassed. |
A.Do exercise after dinner. | B.Adjust our sleep patterns. |
C.Make a schedule in advance. | D.Make the most of our body clock. |
Have you heard the news? Climate change is impacting the way our world works. Whether you believe it is a human-made condition or a natural cycle doesn’t matter at this point.
Record-breaking heat struck the Pacific Northwest in June. When the first heat dome (热穹顶) formed in 2021, it sent temperatures through the roof in places where there is no air conditioning in homes. Portland and Seattle both reached more than 108°F, with the former topping out at 116°F.
What can we do to make changes? It starts by switching from the burning of fossil fuels. By reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that reflects heat and sunlight, we can dissipate (消散) the heat more easily.
We’re running out of time to act. Things will keep getting worse until changes are made.
A.We know the world is getting warmer. |
B.Long-term drought advances the problem. |
C.It will take all of us to battle this problem together. |
D.In July, another heat dome formed in Northern California. |
E.Once summer comes along, 100 degree days begin to appear. |
F.It’s not just during the day that we need to worry about things. |
G.Climate change can also cause some regions to be abnormally cool. |

“Dad,” whispered Tarig. “Are you awake?” Dad opened his eyes. “What’s the matter, son?” Tarig couldn’t sleep and he felt that it was too hot. Maybe there’s a storm coming. All day long he felt like something was about to happen. Dad whispered back to his son, “You could be right. Go back to bed, there’s a good boy.”
Tarig shook his head. “I’m going downstairs where it’s cooler. Why don’t you come with me?” Dad refused, saying that he would stay there. Tarig went down the landing. He and his father were alone in the house. His mother and sister had gone to visit relatives. He went into the kitchen and lay on the floor. He felt cooler and fell sleep at last.
Suddenly he awoke with a shock. In the distance he could hear a roar, like thunder. It seemed to be coming closer and closer. The storm must have arrived, just as they expected. But this was no ordinary storm. Within seconds the whole house began to shake. The vase fell off the shelves with a crash. Tarig could feel the floor moving beneath him. What on earth was happening? He jumped to his feet and tried to turn on the light. It didn’t work. He reached the back door, but just then came aloud cracking noise. Next moment a pile of bricks came down around him. A terrible choking(窒息的) smell filled the air.
At last the dust cleared. Tarig was amazed to find that he was still alive. The framework of the doorway must have saved him. He called out, “Dad? Dad, are you all right?”
No answer. But he heard a rescue dog barking. He struggled to know what was going on outside, but he couldn’t move. Maybe someone was approaching here. “Are they my family? Or my relatives?”
