Eric Carle, the author and artist of over 70 books for children, passed away at the age of 91. Mr. Carle's lively, creative, and colorful work was loved by children around the world. The Very Hungry Caterpillar was Mr. Carle's best-known book. Since it was published in 1969, over 55 million copies of the book have been sold, and it has been translated into more than 70 different languages.
Mr. Carle was born in Syracuse, New York in 1929. As he was growing up, his mother died and Mr. Carle spent a lot of time with his father, who would take him out walking in nature. His father would show him small creatures, filling the young boy's head with wonder. Mr. Carle thinks this helps explain why so many of his books are about nature. At the age of 12, Carle began to study art in school, where, with his teachers' help, he drew many pictures for children's books.
In 1952, Mr. Carle got a job as an artist at the New York Times. Though he created pictures for books with other authors, he created many of his most well-loved books completely on his own. Most of Mr. Carle's books are meant for younger readers. He said that he wanted to help make school a fun, welcoming place. "I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn." he said.
Children around the world responded to Mr. Carle's work, and Mr. Carle responded to this enthusiasm. Mr. Carle worked hard to reach out to students and teachers. In 2002, Mr. Carle and his wife opened the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. The museum shows off picture books from around the world. It also puts on many art programs for students and teachers.

A group of scientists at Georgia Tech University have recently studied the ways that elephants use sucking power when eating. Along the way, the scientists have learned a number of other surprising things elephants can do with their trunks.
Elephants' trunks are incredible. They weigh over 91 kilograms, but there are no bones in an elephant's trunk. That helps explain how they can bend and twist, and be used in so many different ways.
Elephants use their trunks to breathe, to smell and to make sounds. Though trunks aren't connected to elephants' stomachs, they are used to grab around 180 kilograms of food every day and bring it to elephants' mouths. Elephants also use their trunks to suck up water to squirt(喷射)into their mouths or on their backs.
But elephants' trunks are also strong enough to be used for fighting. They're made of pure muscle, and can lift items as heavy as 350 kilograms. The scientists wanted to learn more about how elephants' trunks handle small things that don't weigh much.
For African elephants, part of that answer lies in the two finger-like tips they have at the end of their trunks, which allow them to grab things. The scientists studied the African elephants at Zoo Atlanta. They gave the elephants small cubes of a vegetable called a rutabaga. If there were just a few cubes, the elephant would use its fingers to pick them up. But if there were 10 or more cubes, the elephant would suck the cubes up with its trunk and then put them in its mouth.
The elephants could even use suction to lift up something as thin and fragile as a tortilla chip(圆饼片)without breaking it. They did it the same way a person might lift a piece of paper with his mouth by sucking in. That gentleness is surprising in a tool as powerful as an elephant's trunk.
8. Which is the feature of the elephant's trunk?A.It's unique and precious. | B.It's both strong and flexible. |
C.It's connected to the stomach. | D.It's made of muscles and bones. |

C.Picking it up with the tips of its trunk. | D.Breaking and lifting it with great power. |
A.The Elephants,Big Creatures with Curiosity. |
B.An Elephant's Trunk Is Important to the World. |
C.Scientists Test the Suction of Elephants' Trunks. |
D.Elephants' Trunks,Amazing and Surprising Tools. |
Imagine two students. One is constantly shifting in his seat, looking around the classroom, and spinning his pencil. Another is sitting very still with his hands folded, watching you attentively. Which one is paying closer attention to your words and comprehending more of the lesson?
As a teacher of ADHD (多动症) students, I've learned that all is not as it seems. Some students are better able to control their emotions and minds when their bodies are free to move. This includes students who are autistic (自闭症). Additionally, autistic students often find eye contact uncomfortable and listen best while looking away.
If such students must squeeze their behavior into what many teachers call whole body listening—a motionless body and controlled stare—it could actually disturb their concentration. Perhaps a student who seems distracted (分心) is using his ways to effectively self-control, while one who appears to be listening may be distracted by the need to keep up appearances.
But this doesn't apply to all students. For some, the typical behavior of a "good listener" really does mean that they' re paying attention. So, if you can't use movement or eye contact as a standard of paying attention, how can you tell whether a student is listening attentively?
There are ways you can use to help students to figure this out. Give students freedom to experiment with ways to listen. You could start by explaining to students that you care more about what their minds are doing than what their bodies are doing. Then let them know they are free to look around and move around, as long as they make a sincere effort to listen.
The phrase whole body listening doesn't have to mean controlling natural movement. If we consider the diversity of what various bodies do while listening, whole body listening can take on a new, wide meaning—truly using your whole body to help you listen well.
12. Why are two students mentioned in paragraph 1?A.To draw the attention of the readers. |
B.To present an argument about listening. |
C.To show what different students do in class. |
D.To warn students to listen to teachers carefully. |
A.Ask them to answer questions. | B.Control their body movements. |
C.Limit their emotions and minds. | D.Avoid watching them in the eyes. |
A.Who can be a good listener. | B.What good listening looks like. |
C.The effort students make to listen. | D.The freedom to move around in class. |
A.The new meaning of whole body listening. |
B.The natural body movements when listening. |
C.The teachers' view on whole body listening. |
D.The ways to listen with the whole body. |

A Happy Day at School
It was a most trying period. Things at home were getting from bad to worse. Dad's alcoholism had become worse, especially after he ran out of money. Mum was always losing temper as she could not make ends meet with her poor income as a factory operator. I had been an above-average student, but now I was doing poorly in school.
I dreaded coming home after school. Dad would come home late and shout abuse at Mum. When he fell asleep, I would often hear Mum's sobs. I could do nothing to ease the situation at home and this realization caused me a great deal of suffering and frustration.
It was at this point that Mrs. Justin entered my life. A soft-spoken woman in her late forties, she was my class teacher. She was quick to notice the change that had come over me. One day, during break, I was standing alone in one corner of the canteen when Mrs. Justin spotted me. She gestured for me to follow her. We headed for the library, where she asked me to take a seat next to her. I sat with my head bent.
“Helen”, she called. I lifted my head and looked at her. I saw the warmth, and the love in her lovely eyes. Tears welled up in my eyes and I tried my best to hold them back. However, I could not. She held my hands and waited. When I had finished, she asked me to tell her my problem. I told her the whole story and she listened patiently.
At the end of my story, she gave me a lesson on life. As I heard her talk, my admiration for this woman grew. My perception changed. Before this meeting, I had felt I was nobody. However, as the meeting progressed, I felt different. I knew Mrs. Justin cared for me.
