One of the things we were able to offer at our program before COVID(新冠病毒)forced us into lockdown was pre-loved clothing. We would set it up on tables once a month for our members to look through and take what they needed.

We had a lady join our program who was under government protection after escaping domestic violence. You could tell she’d been through a lot as she was shy and nervous but somehow had a kind of strength about her.

I soon noticed that she wore the same sweater every time she came. When our “market day” came around and we had our clothing laid out, I took her by the hand and told her to take what she needed. She refused as she didn’t have any money, but when I assured her it was free, she smiled and started to look through the piles.

We found quite a few things in her size and I urged her to take them to the bathroom to try them on. She took most of them and left that day very grateful and feeling a little better about herself.

She arrived the following week with a plate of baked cookies. I told her how much we appreciated her taking the time to make them as she handed me the plate.

She took me by the shoulder, kissed me on both cheeks, and looked me in the eye as she said thank you.

She had been treated with such cruelty and disrespect and this small gesture had a great impact on her. We hugged one another warmly.

From that day on, I put aside anything I thought she would like as we sorted the new donations. By the time she was moved to a new safe house, she had a whole new cupboard of clothes.

4. What is the program intended to do?
A.To raise money by selling pre-loved clothing.
B.To collect pre-loved clothing once a month.
C.To help its members by providing used clothes.
D.To offer people in lockdown what they looked for.
5. What do you think of the author?
A.Faithful.B.Considerate.C.Unreliable.D.Impatient.
6. What effects did the author’s gesture have on the lady?
A.She felt better about herself.B.She regained respect of others.
C.She decided to give others warm hugs.D.She could donate money to others.
7. What is the best title of the text?
A.Lockdown creates a new possibilityB.A sweater is more than a piece of clothing
C.Pre-loved clothing can make a differenceD.A new safe house is waiting for unlucky women

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。因为目前的雪碧瓶子无法被循环利用,因此可口可乐公司宣布将用透明的瓶子取代绿色的瓶子。

Coca-Cola announced on Wednesday that it will begin transitioning (转变) from green to clear plastic on Aug. I to increase the material’s likelihood of being remade into new beverage (饮料) bottles. The beverage giant is committed to making 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025 and using at least 50% recycled material in its packaging by 2030.

Sprite, an important brand of Coca-Cola, currently uses plastic bottles containg a green additive called Polyethylene Telephthalate (PET). These bottles are commonly changed into single-use items like clothing and carpeting that can’t be recycled into new PET bottles.

“Taking colors out of bottles improves the quality of the recycled material,” said Julian Ochoa, CEO of R3CYCLE, which is working with Coca-Cola to improve bottle-to-bottle recycling. “When recycled, clear PET Sprite bottles can be remade into bottles, helping drive a circular economy for plastic.”

Sprite, the popular lemon-flavored soft drink, which first hit shelves in 1961, is also getting a new logo and packaging design. Sprite’s packaging will keep the brand’s recognizable green colour and include noticeable “Recycle Me” message. Other drinks that use green bottles, including Fresca, Seagram’s, and Mello Yello, will also transition to clear packaging in the coming months.

Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have been criticized for contributing to the world’s plastic pollution. In 2021, both companies ranked as the world’s top plastic polluters for the 4th consecutive (连续的) year by the environmental organization Break Free From Plastic. Global beach cleanups were carried out by more than 11,000 volunteers in 45 countries to identify the most common plastic polluters. Break Free From Plastic found that 20,000 Coca-Cola branded products were picked up, representing more pollution than the next two top polluters combined.

Coca-Cola announced its “World Without Waste” sustainable packaging program in 2018, in which it promised to make all of its packaging recyclable — excluding the caps and labels — as well as have at least 25% of its beverages sold in refillable packaging by 2030.

8. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To state the main idea of the text.B.To introduce Coca-Cola’s new product.
C.To give the news’ background information.D.To draw people’s s attention to Coca-Cola.
9. What do we know about green bottles from the text?
A.Their material is of low quality.
B.They can only be changed into single-use items.
C.They contain more pollutants than clear bottles.
D.They are more expensive to recycle.
10. What did Break Free From Plastic find?
A.20,000 Coca-Cola products were produced in 2021.
B.Plastic was the most common polluter in 45 countries.
C.The top three and four polluters made less pollution than Coca-Cola in 2021.
D.Coca-Cola and PepsiCo were responsible for the environmental protection.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A.Coca-Cola’s releasing new soft drinks.
B.“Recycle Me” message on the clear Sprite bottle.
C.Colored bottles decreasing the quality of the recycled material.
D.Sprite retiring its signature green plastic bottles after more than 60 years.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主主语讲的是布朗大学的科学家在科学杂志上发表的一项新研究发现,一个人遇到的光线的数量和质量会显著影响情绪。

From changes in daylight across seasons to the artificial lighting choices in workplaces, it’s clear that the quantity and quality of light that a person encounters can significantly impact mood. Now, scientists at Brown University think they know why.

In a new study published in a science magazine, the research team used functional MRI(磁共振) to reveal how light-intensity signals reach the brain, and how brain structures involved in mood process those signals. The study demonstrated that some regions of the cerebral cortex(大脑皮层) involved in cognitive(认知的) processing and mood show sensitivity for light intensity.

The discovery has implications for understanding mood problems like seasonal affective disorder and major depressive disorders, as well as how to treat them, said lead study author Jerome Sanes. “Identifying this pathway and understanding its function might directly promote development of approaches to treating depression,” Sanes added.

The findings build on previous research by study co-author David Berson, a neuroscience professor, who in 2002 discovered special light-sensing cells in the eye. To determine whether light intensity adjusts the human prefrontal cortex, the researchers used functional MRI to explore whole-brain activation patterns in 20 healthy adults.

In a relatively simple experiment, according to Sanes, participants viewed four different levels of light intensity through glasses. They viewed light intensities ranging from dark to bright, for 30 seconds each. To keep them alert, they concurrently performed a task requiring them to state the difference between two tones.

They found that light suppressed(压制) activity in the prefrontal cortex in proportion to the light intensity. In this study, the researchers also showed that the prefrontal regions of the human brain have light-sensitive signals, which, Sanes said, may explain the effects of light intensity on complex emotional and cognitive behaviors.

12. What might be a potential application of the research findings?
A.A method of making artificial light.
B.A possible treatment for depression.
C.A way to do research on new areas about light.
D.A possible further research on light-sensing cells.
13. What does the underlined word “concurrently” in paragraph5 mean?
A.Somehow.B.Passively.C.Suddenly.D.Meanwhile.
14. Why can light affect people’s mood?
A.People are alert to different visual light.
B.Complex emotional behaviors depend on light.
C.Parts of the brain involved in mood are sensitive to light intensity.
D.Some regions of the cerebral cortex can adjust light-sensing cells.
15. In which section of a newspaper can we find the text?
A.Health.B.Education.C.Lifestyle.D.Culture.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There was an old, wise man who grew sicker by the day. However, his son was still young and had yet to reach his full potential. So the man decided to teach his son the ways of the world before death comes knocking.

One morning, the man handed his son a watch passed down for generations. The boy had never seen it before so he didn’t quite know what to make of it. “What am I supposed to do with this watch, father?” “I want you to take the watch to the jeweler (珠宝商). Show him the watch and ask him how much it’s worth. But don’t accept any offer. Instead, come back home with the watch.”

The boy did as his father had instructed, but only to be told it was only worth $100. He complained, “The jeweler said he was taking a gamble (赌注)on buying the watch and that he’d have a hard time finding a buyer. And if I’m being honest, I kind of agree with him. I don’t think this watch is anything special.” The father was nodding, seemingly in agreement with the jeweler’s assessment. “Okay,” the father said. “Now take the watch to the pawnshop (当铺). See how much you can get for the watch.”

In his mind, the boy disagreed. But he didn’t want to argue with his father so he did the job anyway. However, he still went home looking defeated. “Father, the best I got was $20. They told me that the watch had problems. There were scratches (刮痕) that even I didn’t notice after carrying it with me all day.” The father, yet again, nodded in agreement.

“So what do you want me to do? Should I go back to the jeweler? After all, he is willing to pay more money.” “No,” said the father. “I want you to go to the museum to talk to my friend. The lady will have a better idea of what this watch is really worth.”
