文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章介绍了小男孩Robbie的经历让其紧张沮丧,来自养父母的爱及其对老年狗的关爱使其逐渐康复。

Robbie Gay is a young boy with a massive heart. He had a terrible start to life, hospitalized twice with brain injuries before entering the foster (寄养的) home. When he was finally adopted by his parents, Maria and Charles, he was so frightened by his experiences that he was unable to cry.

However, the youngster found treatment in a most unlikely place — his local animal shelter. There he took comfort in caring for the older dogs who’d been left behind. When his mom Maria asked for his opinion, Robbie explained, “Because people don’t want older people and older dogs. They only want babies and puppies.”

His ability to empathize (共情) with the older dogs obviously comes from his own shocking experiences. He knows what it’s like not to be loved and cared for. Now in a safe and loving home environment, he’s able to open his heart completely to these unfortunate dogs. And it was this kindness that led him to find his own tears again when one of his foster dogs died.

Obviously, one of the difficulties in caring for these older dogs is that many don’t stay alive for long. But Robbie is insistent in staying with them right up until they pass away, as he quite rightly says, “I don’t think of when they’re going, I think of how they feel right now.”

Robbie is particularly unusual in that he not only wants to care for these aging dogs in their final moments, he also hopes to foster older people when he grows up. He is truly devoted to compassion and understanding, even if it leaves him heartbroken when his four-legged friends depart too soon.

Hopefully, Robbie will continue to change his negative experiences into caring for others. Through his beautiful heart, may he continue to heal and feel loved with his wonderful furry family, and his human one, too!

4. What was young Robbie like when he entered the foster home?
A.Wise and easy-going.B.Determined and brave.
C.Fearful but kind-hearted.D.Impatient and awkward.
5. What inspired Robbie to care for unwanted elderly dogs?
A.His parents’ requirements.B.His childhood experiences.
C.The fate of the elderly dogs.D.The love from the animal shelter.
6. What does Robbie focus on at present?
A.The time when the dogs might die.
B.The survival rate of the aging dogs.
C.The way to keep the elderly dogs happy.
D.The support of the local community.
7. What does the author expect of Robbie in the near future?
A.Living a pleasant life.
B.Fostering more elderly dogs.
C.Finding another adopted family.
D.Working in the local animal shelter.

San Francisco residents may notice something missing the next time they hail a taxi—no driver at the wheel. On June 2, 2022, Cruise, a division of General Motors (GM), was approved to charge for rides in its autonomous cars. Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has been offering a similar service in Chandler, Arizona, since October 2020. However, Cruise is the first company allowed to operate commercial driverless cars in a major US city.

The first-of-its-kind permit comes with some restrictions. Cruise vehicles will be limited to transporting passengers in less crowded areas of the city between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The self-driving cars should not exceed a speed of 30 mph. They are also not allowed to operate in heavy rain or fog. The rules are meant to reduce any injuries or accidents.

Cruise plans to launch the service gradually with a fleet of just 30 cars. The first robotaxis will be modified (修改的) versions of GM’s Chevrolet Bolt. However, the company is seeking approval to get its custom- built Cruise Origin on public roads. The autonomous electric vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals (踏板) and can attain highway speeds. The car’s roomy interior is fitted with seats that face each other.

Cruise’s ability to obtain the commercial permit to operate is a big step forward. However, the company still has to convince passengers that its technology is safe. A 2021 survey by the American Automobile Association found that 74 percent of Americans are afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle.

Regardless of whether the program is successful, its initiation is a significant milestone for Cruise. Waymo is still working on ensuring its self-driving vehicles are safe on busy street roads. Uber and Tesla have both announced plans to launch autonomous ride-hailing services. Neither have succeeded thus far.

8. Where is Cruise allowed to operate its autonomous ride-hailing services now?
A.In some major cities of the USA.
B.On the streets of Chandler, Arizona.
C.In some regions of San Francisco.
D.On all the highways of the country.
9. What does the author describe in detail in paragraph 3?
A.The feature of Cruise Origin.
B.The future of self-driving cars.
C.The original plan of the company.
D.The new version of Chevrolet Bolt.
10. What is the attitude of most Americans towards the self-driving taxis?
A.Supportive.B.Objective.
C.Indifferent.D.Skeptical.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A.Self-Driving Cars Are Coming to San Francisco
B.Self-driving Vehicles Are Popular in the Major Cities
C.Cruise Offers Free Autonomous Ride-hailing Services
D.More Companies Charge for Rides in Self-driving Cars D

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍让孩子们爱读书的研究及发现。

Jackie Kennedy once said, “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” But experts disagree on how to inculcate (灌输) this love of books into our children’s worlds.

The Michigan Health Lab shares a study in favor of keeping company with your toddler (学步期儿童) and reading an old-fashioned print book. Researchers observed interactions of 72 parents reading to their toddlers. According to the study, parents of children aged two to three years old interacted more with their little ones when the bedtime story was a traditional book, which is averse to a Kindle or other digital book formats.

In their scholastic reports, researchers suggest that digital book sessions with little kids are often more about the technology and less about the book. Print book interactions by contrast, focus purely on the story! Plus young children love things they can hear, see and touch.

However, when it comes to your elementary-school-aged reader, keep print story time an option, but don’t worry about introducing an e-reader as well.

University of Akron’s Digital Text Initiative director, Jeremy Scott Brueck, tested this theory by giving his preschool students a book to read. He found about one third knew all the words in the story. He then reintroduced the story with an interactive digital reader. After students read the book again, 54% were able to recognize the words in the story. Not only that, but Brueck found that students were really engaged because of the e-reader’s interactive features.

For people of all ages, human connection tower over both print and digital media. Reading with your children of all ages and spending quality time with them is the best way to ensure they are not only “reading ready” but that they also develop social and emotional skills, and self confidence. Every child is unique, so parents can experiment to find the best way to bond with their children over books.

12. Why is Jackie Kennedy mentioned at the beginning of the text?
A.To make comparisons.B.To introduce the topic.
C.To provide an example.D.To support an argument.
13. What does the underlined word “averse” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Similar.B.Related.C.Committed.D.Opposite.
14. What can be inferred from the study of Jeremy Scott Brueck?
A.Younger children love old-fashioned print books.
B.Digital readers may be more exciting to older children.
C.People can benefit from both digital and print books.
D.Digital readers can develop children’s strong personality.
15. Why does the author suggest parents reading books with kids in the last paragraph?
A.To promote learning and bonding.B.To keep them out of online games.
C.To get them familiar with reading apps.D.To help them gain a sense of achievement.
