Being a polite airline passenger starts with just a few easy steps.
Help your fellow traveler
While you're loading your carryon bag into the overhead space, offer to lift a fellow passenger's up there, too. Not only is it kind, but it could make the boarding process more efficient for everyone else.
Keep your personal things well, personal
It's important to be mindful of your personal belongings. Avoid hitting other passengers with your bag, as you walk down the aisles(过道), by keeping it in front of you and close to your body. And once you sit down, you should stay there, and make sure you have everything you will need for the flight once you settle in your seat. Reaching over other passengers to access the overhead storage during the flight is uncomfortable for everyone.
Respect your (limited) space
In the narrow space of an airplane, maintaining your personal space will go a long way towards making a smoother ride for everyone. Let the middleseat passenger use the armrests (it's the least you can do), and keep your legs within the width of the chair frame.
Be willing to swap seats with a family
Airlines sometimes reserve certain seats for special passengers or charge extra fees for adjacent(毗连的) ones, making it tough for family members to buy seats together. If you're traveling alone, offer to switch seats so that a family can sit beside each other; it's a kind gesture that they won't forget. But be sure to delay swapping until the plane has reached the safe altitude,as switching seats while everyone is boarding can be an inconvenience for those standing in the walkways.

“You’ll be blind by the time you’re twenty-five,” a doctor at Children’s Hospital predicted. “Your blood sugars are much too high.” It consumed me. No matter where I was or what I was doing, it was overhead like a dark cloud, waiting for just the right opportunity to break open and destroy my world.
I liked painting. Losing myself in painting filled me with peace. Painting provided me with the only place where I could escape from those threatening words.
When I was twenty-one, my right eye went blind. Precisely three months after my twenty-fifth birthday, I had a massive hemorrhage (大出血) in my left eye because of an accident. For the next twenty years, vision came and went. I went through many eye operations in an attempt to keep my vision. But after one final operation, I lost the battle and all remaining vision. And I buried all dreams of painting.
Desperate, I enrolled in (注册) a sixteen-week program for the blind and visually impaired (损伤的). I learned personal adjustment and the use of a computer with adaptive software. A whole new world opened up to me through this program.
“Jaws and Window-Eyes are leading software for the blind,” my instructor told me. “You can use the Internet, e-mail and Microsoft with all its tools and features.” It’s amazing! Hope went up for the first time in years. “By learning how to use hot keys to control the mouse, you can use Microsoft Access, Excel and Powerpoint,” my instructor added.
For the next several years, I learned that when one door closes, another door opens. There are plenty of choices available for the blind and visually impaired through the gift of technology. Not only do I have a speaking computer, but I have a speaking watch, alarm clock and calculator.
4. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A.The right opportunity. | B.Losing my sight in the future. |

B.Every man has his price. |
C.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. |
D.Be optimistic in the face of life’s difficulties. |

As we slide even closer to Father's Day during these pandemic (流行病)times, I can’ t help but feel super privileged to tell you about one extraordinary dad. He's a dad so good that after he was done raising his own kids, he took to YouTube to do some more dadding to millions of complete and total strangers in need.
Rob Kenney's childhood had a theme that, sadly, is not at all uncommon for American kids: fatherlessness. His father left his family when he was just twelve years old, and statistics say that lines up with the experience of about 25% of kids today. Many lessons a dad would teach a kid, he just had to learn on his own. However, Kenney swore that his own kids would not have that experience, and after successfully raising two kids into two adults, he's branching out to help fatherless kids just like him in the coolest way possible.
Kenney has started a YouTube channel called “Dad, How Do I?" to show fatherless kids a variety of “how to' s" over the everyday tasks of living. From “how to tie a tie" to "how to shave your face" to "how to check your car's oil" , Kenney’s videos are readily understood, though almost entirely unedited.
In the past week, thanks to some viral posts on Twitter and Facebook by influencers, Kenney's channel has gone from a handful of subscribers to 1.97 million! It just goes to show you how much his " Practical 'Dadvice' for everyday tasks" is needed and appreciated by fatherless kids everywhere --- not to mention adults who just simply don ' t know how to do stuff. The viewers ' comments on Kenney's YouTube channel can move even the hard-hearted to tears.
8. What's the author's main purpose of writing the text?A.To celebrate Father's Day. |

C.To stress the major role fathers play. |
D.To warn people against the pandemic. |
A.To make a name for himself. |
B.To set an example to his kids. |
C.To direct parents to bring up their kids. |
D.To teach fatherless kids to do everyday things. |
A.Complex. | B.Well edited. |
C.Slightly abstract. | D.Straightforward. |
A.The popularity of his channel. |
B.His thanks to enthusiastic posters. |
C.The necessity of updating his videos. |
D.His comments on hard-hearted viewers. |
Before the end of the year, employees at Ubiquitous Energy, a company in Redwood City, Calif, will gather in a window-lined conference room to stare toward the future. That’s because their new glass windows will offer more than an amazing view of the North California landscape. They will also be able to power the company’s lights, computers and air conditioners.
Several years in the making, Ubiquitous’ energy-producing glass is a remarkable technological achievement. Its power lies in the layers of organic polymers (聚合物) between sheets of glass. As light enters the window, the flow of electrons between the polymer layers creates an electric current, which is then collected by tiny wires in the glass.
“It’s sort of like a transparent computer display run in reverse (反过来),” says Veeral Hardev, director of business development at Ubiquitous Energy. “Instead of electricity being shuttled to different points in a display to light them up, light is producing electricity to be shuttled out of different points in the window.”
Right now the windows produce about a third as much electricity from a given amount of sunlight as the typical solar cells used in roof panels (板).These windows, about half as transparent as ordinary glass, don’t work as well as transparent ones. Hardev says the company is likely to improve the transparency significantly. As for the lower output of electricity, he notes that windows can cover a much greater surface area than a roof, so numerous windows will produce a surprisingly larger amount of electricity than the production from a rooftop full of higher-efficiency solar panels. “You could do both.” says Hardev. “But you’ll get more from the windows. The biggest challenge, he adds, is increasing the windows from less than two square feet currently to about 50 square feet.”
12. What makes the new glass windows special?A.They can offer an amazing view. |
B.They are controlled by computers. |
C.They can power the conference room. |
D.They can help stare toward the future. |
A.The source of light. |
B.The significance of different points. |
C.The similarity of computer and glass. |
D.The working principle of energy-producing glass. |
A.The transparency of the glass. |
B.The quality of the rooftop. |
C.The height of the solar panels. |
D.The thickness of the glass. |
A.Windows: A New Challenge of Technology |
B.Windows: No Longer Just for Letting in the Light |
C.Power: A Pressing Problem in the Near Future |
D.Power: Not Enough from Rooftop Solar Panels |
Polar Vortexes
If you're a resident of the United States, chances are good that you might be familiar with polar vortexes(涡旋). In the past year, the country has faced several outbreaks of extremely cold temperatures!
The polar vortex is always present near the poles and corresponds to the cold temperatures that we typically associate with these regions.
Now you can probably guess how dangerous these vortexes are. Regions like Chicago and Florida saw temperatures that were much lower than the average for these areas. As a result, almost 21 people lost their lives.
It seems that climate change plays a role in almost every catastrophe these days. Whether it is the melting of polar ice, rising sea levels, or even big wildfires around the globe, climate change has a hand in them all.
A.However, some experts hold different opinions about that. |
B.Well, is the polar vortex also one of climate change's symptoms? |
C.Will the polar vortex make an appearance in what's left of winter? |
D.This mass of cold air weakens in summer and strengthens in winter. |
E.In Chicago, the temperatures dropped to minus 43 degrees centigrade. |
F.Besides, hundreds of people were injured due to the abnormally cold weather. |
G.Compared with the northern vortex, the southern vortex is larger and stronger. |

There was once a boy in ragged clothes running to ask a building contractor(包工头)who wore elegant clothes in a construction site of a skyscraper(摩天大楼),“How could I become as rich as you when I grow up?"
With a glance at the boy,the tall and strong-build contractor replied,"I would like to tell you a story first about three diggers. The first digger liked holding a spade(锹) without doing anything but saying that he wanted to be a boss in the future. The second digger liked complaining about the long-time work and his low salary. The third digger always quietly devoted himself to digging without making any claims.Several years later, the first digger was still holding his spade in the original place and the second took an excuse of work injury for early retirement.Only the third digger became the boss of the building company.Do you understand the moral of this story?Just go to buy a red shirt and work hard.”
The little boy was puzzled and could not figure out the implication of the story. So he asked the contractor to explain further.Pointing to the builders who were working on the scaffold(脚手架),the contractor talked to the little boy,"Look at those people! They are all my workers.I can't remember all of their names, and even I have no impression of some of them. But if you look carefully, you will notice a sunburned man in red among them.I notice him very early. He seems to be working harder with higher spirits than others. He is always the first one to work every day while the last one to leave. It is exactly his red shirt that makes him stand out among all the workers. Now I am about to ask him to be my taskmaster and I believe he will work even much harder from now on.Maybe he will soon be promoted to my assistant."
