It was a hot Summer day a few years ago. I had just pulled into the local gas station to fill my tank. After pumping the gas I started to walk inside to pay. That is when I noticed them. Two elderly women stood back from their car. There was a mixture of shock, fear, and horror on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw. Five yellow jackets had started to build a nest around their gas cap. My eyes widened. I shared the ladies’ fear.

Yellow jackets had never been friends of mine. Several times these bad tempered wasps(黄蜂) had attacked me while I was mowing my lawn giving me multiple stings(叮咬)each time I ran over their ground nests. They are the reason why I never repair my lawn in shorts anymore. The worst time, however, happened when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and I were running and playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their hidden nests again because before I knew it both of us were being chased and stung over and over by the yellow jackets while we ran away screaming. I ran to my Mom with tears in my eyes. She immediately ran a cold bath and put us both in it to ease the pain and itching(发痒) before giving us medicine to fight all the poison in our little bodies from the stings.

Still, I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my back pocket for a paper towel I had there, tore out the nest and stepped on it while the angry wasps buzzed around me. Both of the ladies thanked me and I said, “You’ re welcome! ” with a smile and a happy heart.

4. Why were the two elderly ladies scared in the oil station?
A.They couldn’t find the way back home.B.They couldn’t afford the things they wanted.
C.They were afraid of being stung by some pests.D.They were afraid of being forced out of the room.
5. What did the writer do in case of being stung when repairing the lawn?
A.Wear a mask.B.Apply some medicine.C.Wear shorts.D.Wear thick and long clothes.
6. Which of the following word can best describe the writer’s early experience?
A.Lucky.B.Miserable.C.Exciting.D.Instructive.
7. How did the writer drove away the wasps?
A.By spraying some medicine.B.By destroying their homes.
C.By covering their nests with paper.D.By burning down them.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了帝王蝶的迁徙,所在地之谜、数量的减少及其原因等。

Western monarch butterflies (帝王蝶) spend their winters on the central California coast. A few months later, they produce young in the Central Valley and as far north and east as Idaho. But where they go in between remains an open question to biologists. Therefore, a group of biologists call on anyone who spots a monarch north of Santa Barbara this spring to get a quick shot and email them the photo with a date and a location.

“Something’s going on in early spring,” said Cheryl Schultz, a professor at Washington State University Vancouver. “Winter survival isn’t the problem in the short term, but they don’t know whether the monarchs are not making it producing places, not finding plants to feed themselves along the way,” she said.

The Western monarch population stood in the millions in the 1980s. In 2017, an annual count found 200,000 butterflies. In 2018, the number fell to about 30,000—a figure that held steady last year. The monarchs’ decline is part of a large trend among dozens of butterfly species in the West. What exactly caused the decline? Biologists attach it to a variety of reasons. Many chemicals are sprayed on the milkweed (乳草) monarchs will feed on. Climate change also plays a role in challenges facing monarchs. Yet, they’re not nearly as threatening as those leading to loss of their living room. Farms used to have rough borders that were grounds for the plants monarchs love and live in. However, newly applied practices pushed crops to the edge of fields.

“Butterflies often have good and bad years. We do think there’s potential to turn the situation around.” Dr. Schultz said. And she said she saw two reasons for that. First, the population decline seen in 2017—2018 wasn’t repeated last year. And second, she’s seen butterfly populations recover before.

8. Why do the biologists need the public’s help?
A.To address the unknown about monarchs.B.To improve monarchs’ producing places.
C.To find how monarchs survive the winter.D.To know the distance that monarchs cover.
9. Which of the following harms monarchs most?
A.Lack of health y food.B.Wide use of chemicals.
C.Severe climate change.D.New farming practices.
10. How does Dr. Schultz’s feel about monarchs’ future?
A.Positive.B.Worried.C.Doubtful.D.Cautious.
11. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Why the monarchs are flying awayB.What is happening to the monarchs
C.How the monarchs adapt to natureD.Where the monarchs produce young

It’s easy to forget what communications life was like before 4G. Since its introduction around 2010, mobile subscribers using 4G have enjoyed excellent connectivity. They can stream music, videos and movies, even while conducting video chats. But over the next few years, the launch of 5G networks around the world will bring in exciting capabilities that are much more advanced and beneficial.

Due to 5G’s higher connection speed, mobility and capacity, this next-generation network is expected to enable innovative software for a range of advanced applications. For example they permit surgeons to perform microscopic surgery from remote locations.

Communications service providers (CSPs) will continue to support existing networks while they invest in new infrastructure (基础设施) to support 5G. In a recent blog, Jean-Pierre Brulard, VMware senior vice president, writes: “For CSPs, it is major project, which is why it is likely that rather than a pure 5G network, the majority of people will see a blended approach, where 4G is available to deliver basic services, and 5G is introduced for specific tasks.

Brulard adds, “With 5G, companies can access the levels and speed of connectivity they need by taking advantage of the game-changing technologies — such as Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing and AI — that are going to shape the next stage of the digital revolution.”

Processing IoT and AI in an accelerated 5G world means computing, storage and networking need to be done closer to the end user, which is different from the traditional data center method of data processing. Organizations can remotely manage, monitor and secure thousands of locations and millions of diverse devices. This helps to ensure the rapid delivery of the latest apps, containers and infrastructure updates.

5G can lead to better, accelerated access to healthcare and education, and people can enjoy safer driving conditions, among other digitally fueled benefits.

12. What is the purpose of the release of 5G networks?
A.To replace net works.
B.To strengthen excellent connectivity.
C.To ensure the success of microscopic surgery.
D.To make advanced applications more effective.
13. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “blended” in paragraph 3?
A.Simple.B.Combined.C.Advanced.D.Modern.
14. How does the 5G digital revolution benefit people more?
A.By storing traditional data.
B.By changing diverse devices.
C.By processing the latest data.
D.By having a better access to education.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Health.B.Education.
C.Science.D.Entertainment.

The Simple Trick Can Help You Sleep

For those who can't sleep easily, prepare for the best night’s sleep ever. No more tossing and turning into the early hours of the morning. No more counting sheep on Sunday evenings. And no more lying, wide-eyed, in the dark after waking up in the middle of the night.     16     This all-natural solution is called the 4-7-8 method, and yes, it’s as simple as it sounds. First, get settled into a comfortable position on your bed. Then, simply breathe in air through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and then breathe the air out slowly through your mouth for eight more seconds.     17

That's all there is to it! Don't believe us? Just ask Harvard-educated medical doctor Andrew Weil, who adopted this exercise from a centuries-long Indian yogi meditation practice. The yogis use this method to achieve a state of complete relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety. Slowing down your breathing forces the rhythm of your heart to slow down, too.     18     In other words, it’s a natural way to make you calm for your body and mind.

“The theory is that by putting certain rhythms on the breath with your voluntary system, gradually these are made into the involuntary nervous system," he said.     19    So it's the regularity of doing this over a period of weeks, months , years that produces the changes that you want.”

There you go!     20     If you're still tossing and turning, don't miss these tips from sleep doctors which are almost guaranteed to give you a better night's sleep.

A.And that comes with time.
B.Finally , repeat until you fall asleep.
C.It makes the rest of your body relax.
D.That enables you to fall asleep more easily.
E.Here comes the explanation for your sleepless nights.
F.Once you start sticking to it, you can quit counting sheep for good.
G.There's now an easy and expert-approved way to fall asleep in less than a minute.
