Long before I could read on my own, she shared with me the strength and beauty of McCloskey’s language a story of a little girl and her mother out in nature, co-existing with a mother bear and her own baby. The power of the story, of language and of my mother all came together. And it happened many times after that, over and over. The read aloud made me a reader.
Years later, I was reading aloud a picture book to a small child in a classroom. His life, so far, had not been easy. His childhood was troubled by poverty and loneliness. In that moment, in the joy of the read aloud, he had an idea that started something big.
What he said was this: “Mrs. Allyn, let’s make sure everyone knows how good this feels. Let’s have a holiday for the read aloud” Therefore, my organization, LitWorld, created a grassroots movement World Read Aloud Day in 2010 to honor this young boy’s wish for everyone to be able to have a read aloud every day.
Since the day he shared that good idea with us, World Read Aloud Day has become a worldwide event reaching over one million people in more than 65 countries around the world. This year we are over 600 cities strong, a number that is growing every day.
Children who grow up as readers become engaged citizens of the global world, and every child deserves the right to read. When I say that reading aloud will change the world, I know it sounds simple. But one of the many great things about giving kids access to the power of stories and sharing them together is that it is simple. It is also cheap and easily done. And the impact is huge.

My biggest lessons have been learned through being cheated, particularly by taxi and rickshaw (人力车) drivers, but that doesn’t mean those are bad ways to travel, as long as you know what you’re doing. Below are the best ways to get around the city of Delhi, India, and tips for how to keep from being the victim of scams (欺骗).
Taking taxis is a great way to get around the city of Delhi and chances are, if you arrive in Delhi by plane, as soon as you make it through customs, you’ll be swarmed by Indian taxi drivers. At the Delhi airport, be sure to arrange for a taxi to your hotel at one of the two Delhi Traffic Police Taxi Booths. One is inside the airport, and one is outside. The key is to make sure to go to a booth run by the police rather than by independent taxi drivers.
Rickshaws are one of my favorite ways to get around Indian cities, in part because it’s how the locals often travel. Auto-rickshaws are more common, but bicycle rickshaws are still used in Old Delhi. If you do have a chance to take a bicycle rickshaw, you should do it at least once for a unique experience that should only set you back about 15 rupees. Auto-rickshaw rates around Delhi range between 30 and 80 rupees, depending on distance.
If you really want to travel around Delhi like the locals, take a public bus. Indian buses become very crowded and most do not have air conditioning. They are, however, very cheap. A bus trip won’t set you back any more than 15 rupees, as long as you stay within the city limits. Since Indian buses get so crowded, try to board the bus at the start of the route so you can get a seat.
The train is a great way to get around within the city of Delhi. Fares are reasonable, between six and 22 rupees. All departure announcements are in both Hindi and English, and tokens can be purchased for between six and 22 rupees.

C.show his/her experiences | D.give some advice of traveling |
A.go out of the airport | B.go to a police-run booth |
C.show your ticket to the driver | D.pay more to the drivers to keep safe |
A.help the local rickshaw drivers | B.enjoy the comfortable trip |
C.gain some unique experience | D.save some money |
A.You’ll have to speak English if you travel around in India. |
B.It will be difficult for you to get a seat if you get on the bus halfway. |
C.A rickshaw driver only charges whatever amount you give him. |
D.You won’t have to pay much if you travel around by bus in India. |

However, there is no sound evidence to support this. Main factors in gray hair were thought to be age, stress, environment and improper diet.
In addition, genetics is a very powerful factor, if one of your parents turns gray at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. The team led by Professor Andres Ruiz-Linares at University College London analyzed DNA samples of more than 6,000 volunteers in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru. It identified a gene called IRF4 that is responsible for gray hair. He said the most important reasons for gray hair are genes rather than other influences. This newfound gene means that preventing or even reversing gray hair is now a possibility.
But most scientists think that the answer for gray hair comes from the cells in your hair. These are what determine the color and, eventually, the fade to grey. Your hair is made up of cells called melanocytes which produce pigments (色素) as they grow into the hair fiber. Our hair color is determined by the amount of melanin (黑色素) in our body. The more melanin a person has, the darker his or her hair color.
There are two different types of melanins: eumelanins (真黑色素) and pheomelanins (类黑色素).The former produces black and brown pigments, while the latter produces red and yellow pigments. The exact amount of these pigments determines whether a person has black, brown, blonde or yellow hair. As we age, the ability of the melanocytes to produce more pigments weakens.
Scientists are continuing to try and find ways to prevent graying hair. A team of scientists in France is working to try and stop the melanocytes from being damaged at the end of each hair cycle. They are trying to use a special enzyme to protect the cells from damage. If successful, it could lead the way for new products that keep our locks full of color for years to come.
1. What might play the most important role in the graying process according to Andres Ruiz-Linares?A.genetics of human beings |
