My 17-year-old daughter went off to college and having her away from home brought back memories of watching Peter Pan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particular impressed me: when Mrs. Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns off the last of the night light, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says, “Dear night lights protect my sleeping children.” As a mother, I know how much she loves her children.

It has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting well after a short period of homesickness. For us, though, it’s another story. Like most parents, I love checking in on my children at night. But now she’s gone, and I find night times the hardest. I miss her most at night.

In my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. My husband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off. We complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.

For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. And it’s not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didn’t get any easier. “You feel like something has been taken away from inside you,” said one of them.

I imagine things will get easier with time, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile, as I keep my cell phone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night, I like to think at messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.

1. The writer was deeply impressed by the scene in Peter Pan because ________.
A.she watched the scene with her daughter
B.the scene was very exciting and interesting
C.the scene taught her and her daughter a good lesson
D.as a mother, she understood how much a mother loved her children
2. After her daughter went to college, the writer ________.
A.didn’t get used to the change for a long time
B.often cried as she missed her daughter so much
C.realized she hadn’t done enough for her daughter
D.failed to have a good sleep every night
3. What is the underlined word “melancholy” in Paragraph 3 similar in meaning to?
A.Happiness.B.Anger.
C.Sadness.D.Excitement.
4. According to the last paragraph, why did the writer keep her cell phone close to her in bed?
A.To call her daughter any time.B.To wait for her daughter’s calls.
C.To say good night to her daughter.D.To wait for her daughter’s messages.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了作为世界文化遗产之一,位于美国佛罗里达州的大沼泽地国家公园的情况。

Everglades National Park (大沼泽地国家公园) is located in the state of Florida. It is the largest wilderness in the entire country and makes up 25% of the wetlands in the state. The park is home to several rare and endangered species. It is also the third largest national park in the US, after Death Valley and Yellowstone. Each year, about 1 million tourists visit the park. On a global level, it has been announced as a World Heritage Site.

Unlike most other national parks, Everglades National Park was created to protect an ecosystem (生态系统) from damage. In 1947, President Harry Truman spoke at the official opening of Everglades National Park, saying the goal of creating the park was to protect forever a wild area that could never be replaced.

10,000 different islands make up Everglades National Park. Each of these islands is lived by natural wildlife. The Everglades is home to about 15 species that are endangered. In addition, more than 350 bird species and 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish live within the park. The Everglades is also home to 40 species of mammals and 50 reptile species.

There are many ways to explore the Everglades. Visitors can see alligators (短吻鳄) while hiking the Anhinga Trail. The Everglades is one of the only places on Earth where freshwater alligators and saltwater crocodiles live in the same area. Visitors using airboats are likely to see large groups of birds. Some visitors might enjoy riding bicycles through Shark Valley. Others may want to move slowly through waters where they can see insects and wildlife closely.

According to experts, changes to the Everglades are becoming a danger to several different kinds of wildlife. They say it is a result of actions the US government began more than 50 years ago, and settlers began even earlier.

5. In the first paragraph, we’re mainly told that ________.
A.Florida is famous for its wetlandsB.the US has three important national parks
C.Everglades National Park is of great valueD.Everglades National Park is popular with visitors
6. How does the author describe the richness of wildness in the park?
A.By listing figures.B.By personally experiencing.
C.By making a comparison.D.By carrying on a study.
7. From the passage, we know that _______.
A.in fact Everglades National Park is a big island
B.visitors are not allowed to stay in the water in the park.
C.President Harry Truman first suggested setting up the park
D.the park is among the few places where alligators and crocodiles live together
8. What would be further discussed if the passage is continued?
A.What the government has done to protect the park.
B.How the park’s environment was badly changed.
C.What readers can do to help to save the wetlands.
D.How important endangered wildlife is to the world.

LastPass Password strength has been a topic about the Internet lately. I have seen lots of clever methods for creating and remembering strong passwords. Some are better than others, but in my opinion, none are enough. Here’s the problem: It doesn’t matter how strong your passwords are if you use the same one on multiple sites. All it takes is for a site to get hacked, like Gawker media, or even Sony did, and now your super-strong password has been stolen, and every site on which you used that password has been accessed.

Enter LastPass. It’s not the only password manager out there, but I like it the best. You create ONE strong password that you have to memorize and use it to access you LastPass database. The LastPass database is stored online, on LastPass’s services. LastPass recognizes the site you’re on and automatically logs you in (after, optionally, asking you to re-enter your master password). LastPass also has automatic form fill and automatic password generation. This means that you can have a different, unique, very strong password for every site you log into, but you only have to remember one master password. It’s the best of both worlds.

One argument against LastPass is that if their database is attacked, then all of your sites are in danger, and that’s true, but if their entire line of work is keeping that information safe, I’m willing to take that chance. The alternative is rolling dice(掷骰子) or picking phrases to create passwords, writing all of them down on a piece of paper or something, and then having to manually type them in when I go to a site. A terrible mess.

There is a free version of LastPass, with some additional features unlocked if you pay a $12 a year subscription.

9. The writer thinks using the same password everywhere is ____.
A.convenientB.dangerous
C.appropriateD.enough
10. When using LastPass, users have to remember____.
A.the master password onlyB.the last password
C.unique password each timeD.all passwords used
11. .Some people are against LastPass because ____.
A.they have better ways to create password
B.they think rolling dice is more convenient
C.Gawker median and LastPass were hacked once
D.they have no faith in LastPass database’s safety
12. Joshua Bardwell writes the passage to _____.
A.Share his experienceB.teach how to use a new product
C.introduce a product of good qualityD.advertise his product

Boosting(促进) your Brain Power

Who hasn’t wished that they were just a little smarter? Maybe you’re in school and just want to get a better grade on a test.     16     Here are some ways you can go about boosting your brainpower.

Sleep is one of the easiest things to do, yet one of the ones that most of us don’t do. We live in a busy age and often it seems that we don’t have enough time to get everything done. So many of us sacrifice our hours of sleep to accomplish our daily tasks.     17

Read a book. Being smarter is not only about thinking but knowledge plays a big part in it, too. Reading helps your brain stay active.    18     Think of it as exercise for the brain.

Try turning off that television set and going for a walk. A walk will stimulate your body and relax your mind. Just as watching too much TV can hurt your body, it also causes your brain to slow down as well.

19     There is a big difference between knowing something and being able to teach it to someone else. There is nothing like trying to break something down into simpler terms for others to help you understand it better than you did before.

Work on a puzzle. It can be anything from the newspaper crossword or the new Sudoku puzzle. Puzzles help you use your brain to figure out the answers.    20     Your brain needs exercise just like your body does to be able to function in top form.

So go out there and boost your brainpower, your mind will thank you.

A.The more you read, the more you know, and the smarter you will be.
B.By writing about things you know, it helps you to understand them better.
C.Crossword puzzles also have the added benefit of increasing your vocabulary and knowledge.
D.Maybe you want to show your boss that you are good enough to get a promotion.
E.Giving your body the rest it needs every night can boost your ability to function at your best the next day.
F.Skipping meals can make it harder for you to think and perform at your best.
G.Learn something new and then teach someone else how to do it.

A co-housing complex is a place     47     residents shop, cook, and eat together. Residents of a co-housing complex like its sense of shared community. Once, a man got on a bus to New York. Because he did not want to pay, so he hid in the toilet. But a passenger saw her. She tapped the person in front of her on the shoulder and say, “There’s a bum(流浪汉)in toilet. Tell the bus driver.” The message was passing on from person to person. But somewhere along the way, it was changed. The bus driver told that there was a bomb in the toilet. He immediate stopped the bus and telephoned the police. When the police came, they told the passengers to get off the bus or stay far away. Then they closed the highway. As a result, a traffic jam of 15 mile long was soon caused. Under the help of a dog, the police searched for two hours. Of course they found no bomb.
