It was in 1965 when I was 6 years old that my family moved to Elmont. It was a wonderful place to grow up. There were lots of kids, great schools and we had a big yard. Having grown up a city kid, my father, Nicholas Denaro, believed that grass was not just to look at, but that children were meant to play on it. We played games and badminton there. A white fence separated our backyard from a small wood. My friends and I enjoyed jumping the fence and climbing trees.
My father had the most amazing hand. He could fix anything. He gave those amazing hands to his son, my younger brother, Frank, who also became handy around the house. But my father saved his green fingers for me. He grew flowers, tomatoes, strawberries and figs and he shared his love of gardening with me.
Fourteen years ago, my husband and I went to a local nursery and bought a fig tree for Dad for Father's Day. My mother, Bridget Denaro, called it the best gift I could have given him. He planted it exactly in the middle of the front yard.
He loved that tree and enjoyed delicious figs every year, except just after Sandy hit in 2012. He was so disappointed when cold weather just after the superstorm froze all the remaining figs.
In 2015, my father died of lung cancer at 97. We sold our family home of 61 years last year. We left behind Dad's tree, full of figs waiting to ripen. We briefly considered taking it with us, but decided that his Father's Day fig tree belonged in Elmont. The new owners generously allowed me to take some branches so that I could have a precious reminder of my much-loved father and the Elmont home.

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.
When there's a recession in the economy, those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.

One of the most famous archaeological discoveries in all of history is The Terracotta Army. It's also called the Terracotta Warriors and Horses and they were found by farmers digging for a well in Xi'an in 1974. Becoming a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, the spectacular figures continue to attract millions of visitors from all over the world. Yet the excavations (发掘) are unfinished. Famously, archaeological work at the site and the accompanying Tomb of the First Qin Emperor has been allowed to slow down until technology advances enough to preserve the art works currently buried underground. In addition to this, safety concerns have been raised regarding the unusually high levels of mercury (水银) found on the soil. It's said that this is from the mercury streams which were in the floor of the burial chamber, but only time will tell if this ancient tale is true.
Currently 8000 soldiers have been found, each one with a distinctively different look. This was achieved through an early use of assembly-line (流水线). The warriors were assembled using moulds(模具), with 8 different heads to choose from, and features being added by skilled craftsmen. Studying the warriors and their horses offers historians an important insight into this period in Chinese history. The technology used to assemble the underground army was truly remarkable. Over 40,000 bronze weapons were found, and after more than 2000 years they still appear sharp. How is this possible? The ancient Chinese managed to use protective chrome plating (镀铬), something which was thought to have been invented in Germany in 1937! Chinese metallurgy(冶金) was thousands of years ahead of its time.
When it is finally uncovered, the sight will truly be spectacular and much more will be understood about China's first Emperor and the level of technology the ancient Chinese possessed.
