Ever since then, the programme has enjoyed great success, mainly because the birds now being set free are Mexican birds illegally caught in the wild, confiscated (没收) on arrival north of the border, and raised by their parents in the safety of the programme. The experience shows how little we know about the behaviour and psychology (心理) of parrots, as Peter Bennett, a bird researcher, points out: “Reintroducing species of high intelligence like parrots is a lot more difficult. People like parrots, always treating them as nothing more than pets or valuable ‘collectables’.”
Now that many species of parrot are in immediate danger of dying out, biologists are working together to study the natural history and the behaviour of this family of birds. Last year was an important turning point: conservationists founded the World Parrot Trust, based at Hayle in Cornwall, to support research into both wild and caged birds.
Research on parrots is vital for two reasons. First, as the Arizona programme showed, when reintroducing parrots to the wild, we need to be aware of what the birds must know if they are to survive in their natural home. We also need to learn more about the needs of parrots kept as pets, particularly as the Trust’s campaign does not attempt to discourage the practice, but rather urges people who buy parrots as pets to choose birds raised by humans.

Teen anger can be a frightening feeling, which can destroy lives and relationships, hurt others, affect (影响) health, and cloud futures. But there is a positive aspect, as it can show that a problem exists and can help us face our issues.
Teenager face a lot of emotional (情感的) issues during this period of development. They’re faced with doubts of identity, relationships, and independence. The relationship between teens and their parents is also changing as teens become more and more independent. This can bring about anger for both parents and teens.
So what can teens and parents do? Listen to your teen and focus on feelings. Try to understand the situation from his or her opinion. Blaming (责备) only builds up more walls and ends all communication. Tell them how you feel, stick to facts, and deal with the present moment. Show that you care and show your love. Remember that anger is the feeling and behavior is the choice. Unless we work to change our own behavior, we cannot help another change their behavior.

Located on the shore of Sullivan's Island off the coast of South Carolina, the award-winning cube-shaped beach house was built to replace one smashed to pieces by Hurricane Hugo 10 years ago. In September 1989, Hugo struck South Carolina, killing 18 people and damaging or destroying 36,000 homes in the state.
Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolina's shoreline were poorly constructed, and enforcement of building codes wasn't strict, according to architect Ray Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. In Hugo's wake, all new shoreline houses are required to meet stricter, better-enforced codes. The new beach house on Sullivan's Island should be able to resist a Category 3 hurricane with peak winds of 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.
At first sight, the house on Sullivan's Island looks anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood shell makes it resemble "a large party lantern" at night, according to one observer. But looks can be deceiving. The house's wooden frame is reinforced with long steel rods to give it extra strength.
To further protect the house from hurricane damage, Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings—long, slender columns of wood anchored deep in the sand. Pilings (桩) might appear insecure, but they are strong enough to support the weight of the house. They also elevate the house above storm waves. The pilings allow the waves to run under the house instead of running into it. "These swells of water come ashore at tremendous speeds and cause most of the damage done to beach-front buildings," said Huff.
Huff designed the timber pilings to be partially concealed by the house's ground-to-roof shell. " The shell masks the pilings so that the house doesn't look like it's standing with its pant legs pulled up, " said Huff. In the event of a storm surge, the shell should break apart and let the waves rush under the house, the architect explained.
1. After the tragedy caused by Hurricane Hugo, new houses built along South Carolina's shore line should ________.
A.be easily reinforced |
B.look smarter in design |
C.satisfy higher building standards |
D.be designed in the shape of cubes |

B.make stronger pilings deep in the sand |
C.break huge sea waves into smaller ones |
D.prevent water from rushing into the house |
A.to strengthen the pilings of the house |
B.to give the house a better appearance |
C.to protect the wooden frame of the house |
D.to slow down the speed of the swelling water |
A.fancy-looking | B.water-proof |

The giant panda was born on August 21. Male and female giant pandas look very similar when young, so the zoo did a genetic test to learn whether the newborn is male or not. The panda does not yet have a name. The zoo usually waits until giant pandas are 100 days old to give them a name. At the time, the zoo said the newborn was about the size of a stick of butter -about 12 centimeters long and weighing 110 grams. Now, black accounts for two-thirds of his color. And he has grown quickly. He measures about 35 centimeters long and weighs about 1.6 kilograms.
His mother Mei Xiang is much bigger, weighing about 105 kilograms. The birth was welcomed as rare and happy news during the COVID-19 health crisis, which forced the zoo to close for several months. After Mei Xiang’s pregnancy was announced in August, Internet traffic on the zoo’s popular Panda live video feed increased by 1,200 percent, zoo officials said. When the baby was born about a week later, traffic went so high that the video connection broke for many watchers. Zoo officials had to add bandwidth as a result.
“Something like this is kind of a miracle for us,” National Zoo Director Steve Monfort said at the time. “It lifts the spirits of my team and the whole world.” For now, the Panda-Camera is still the only way the public can see the pandas.

In the US alone, almost 5,500 nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals have been infected with COVID-19. Unfortunately, of these, dozens have succumbed to the disease. Now, hospital workers worldwide may get some relief thanks to Spot, a semi-autonomous four-legged robot developed by Waltham, Massachusetts-based robotics company, Boston Dynamics.
“Starting in early March, Boston Dynamics started receiving inquiries from hospitals asking if our robots could help minimize their staff ’s exposure to COVID-19,” the company writes in a blog post. In response, the company reconfigured (改装)the 3-foot tall robot to operate as a mobile telemedicine platform, enabling healthcare providers to determine a patient’s condition remotely.
The first four-legged robot“dog” was working in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard University on April 9, 2020. Equipped with an iPad “face” and a two-way radio that allows for real-time conversation, Spot helps doctors to speak to patients without coming in contact with them.
“With current practice at local hospitals, patients suspected to have COVID-19 are asked to line up in tents outside to answer questions and get initial assessments for temperature. This process requires up to five medical staff, placing those individuals at high risk of being exposed to the virus,”Boston Dynamics explains.“With the use of a mobile robot, hospitals are able to reduce the number of necessary medical staff at the scene and conserve their limited PPE (personal protective equipment) supply.” The company says the doctors can even use Spot to talk to patients from the safety of their own homes.
Though Spot has already proved extremely helpful, the robotics manufacturer believes it can be even more so. The engineers are currently working on“teaching” the robot to perform tasks like temperature checks. The company is also developing new technology that will allow Spot to aid in the disinfection (消毒)of hospitals as well as other public areas.
