The panel (小组) of judges has doubled in size compared to previous years. The panel has a group of industry experts who are eager to see what this year’s participants can share. And there’s a great team of NPR’s Music station hosts on the panel: Amelia Mason, Novena Carmel and Stas THEE Boss.
Also new this year: Not only will the 2024 winner play a Tiny Desk concert, be interviewed on All Things Considered and go on tour with NPR Music — they’ll also be paired with a tutor in the industry who will help them navigate their music journey. Our judges are determined to give this year’s winner the support they’ll need to take their music to the next level. The winner will also be featured at two festivals this summer: Celebrate Brooklyn and the Millennium Park Summer Music series in Chicago.
And for the first time this year, the Contest is introducing a fan favorite vote. Later this spring, Contest judges will share their favorite entries as part of the annual Tiny Desk-Contest Top Shelf series on YouTube — and then artists and fans will be able to vote for their favorite among those selections.
Here’s how to enter: Record a video of you playing one original song — behind a desk, upload your video to YouTube, and submit the video on our Tiny Desk Contest website by Feb. 21 at 11: 59 p. m.

If you're in need of a little literary escapism at the moment, look no further. Here are book recommendations from several celebrities to help keep your imagination occupied.
Romesh Ranganathan: Life of Pi
Stand-up comedian (单口相声演员) Romesh Ranganathan picks Yann Martel’s bestseller Life of Pi. The novel tells the story of Pi Patel, a boy who spends months at sea, trapped on a lifeboat with a tiger. As the adventure unfolds, it becomes increasingly exciting. There’s also a surprise ending.
Stacey Dooley: The Bees
TV presenter and journalist Stacey Dooley recommends The Bees by Laline Paull. Set inside a beehive (蜂窝) ,this imaginative novel follows the fortunes of Flora 717, a lowly cleaner bee who works her way up against the odds in a strictly graded society. It’s interesting to watch someone start with nothing and achieve incredible success.
Sindhu Vee: Little Fires Everywhere
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng is stand-up comedian Sindhu Vee’s top literary pick. Set in suburban Ohio, Vee says it’s a “minutely observed” novel exploring family, motherhood, race and class. At the centre of the story are two opposing women: uptight, controlling Elena Richardson and chaotic (吵闹的) artist Mia. Warren, whose arrival in the neighborhood quickly causes problems.
Phil Wang: Deep Sea and Foreign Going
Stand-up comedian Phil Wang unearths an unexpected gem (宝石) in Deep Sea and Foreign Going by Rose George. In the book, George describes the journey she took on a container ship from England to Singapore, elegantly mixing the story with insights into the global shipping industry. The book’s humanity is what stands out most for Wang. “Even in these most desperate circumstances, human compassion (同情) does break through.”

The art inside here covers more than ten major genres, such as architecture, stucco sculpture, wall paintings, silk paintings, calligraphy woodblock printing, embroidery, literature, music and dance, and popular entertainment. But all these only existed because of one man’s vision.
In 366 A.D., a monk named Le Zun looked across the river at dawn and saw a thousand Buddhas appear on the golden cliff face of Mingsha mountain along the old Silk Road. The caves were then built by monks and mostly sponsored by people such as wealthy merchants, foreign dignitaries, as well as Chinese emperors.
But when trade in the Silk Road stopped, Dunhuang was soon forgotten and eventually, the Mogao caves were abandoned. The site however was still used as a place of worship by the local people of the 20th century when there was renewed awareness in its presence once more.
Most of the discoveries came from a Chinese Taoist monk named Wang Yuanlu who appointed himself as the guardian. The caves at that time were badly ignored, but Monk Wang recognized their value and instituted a program of restoration, funded by whatever donations he could gather.
He then made one of the great discoveries in Chinese archaeology: an amazing cache, of over 50,000 documents and paintings, which had been hidden in Mogao Cave #17. The cave #17 came to be known as the Library Cave, which was walled up sometime early in the 11th century. A number of theories have been proposed as the reason for sealing the cave. One theory was that the cave had become a waste storeroom for precious, damaged and used documents and holy equipment and then sealed perhaps when the place came under threat. Another suggestion is that the cave was simply used as a book storehouse for documents which accumulated over a century and a half, then sealed up when it became full. Others suggested that the monks hurriedly hid the documents in advance of an attack by invaders.

Transport
Transport is “the big one” and cycling may be the cheapest alternative among all the modes(方式) of transport.
Tom Bourlet, a Brighton-based travel blogger at Spaghetti Traveller, talked to us about transport in Germany and advised that slower, regional(区域的) trains will be more affordable in comparison to those that are high-speed.
He continued, “If choosing a train journey, buy the ticket several months in advance to get a great offer.”
If you intend to use the Eurostar train, keep in mind that you can save money by buying tickets at least a week in advance. Shopping around can also offer reduced prices. A daily or weekly card for a train or a bus may also be worth investing in. Bourlet continues, “While the trains run like clock-work with high efficiency, the buses run relatively slowly, often arriving late to their destination.”
Ask a travel agent
In an age of technology, we don't always consider going to a travel agent when booking on holiday. If you do, ask them for recommendations, they can give you insider tips. Make sure that they are aware of your set budget before signing up to anything.
Food
Region to region, Germany's cuisine will differ slightly. As a general rule, outside the city centre will be cheaper—the further you go, the less expensive it is. Bear this in mind when setting a daily budget for your meals.
Landmarks
Make sure you book your tickets for the landmarks before your trip as there's likely to be a discount when you do this. You may also want to consider a guided tour which is often free.
Before you go
Make sure you buy currency before you leave. This could prevent you being charged extra for withdrawing money and you're more likely to get a good exchange rate.

【推荐1】When our ancestors were peasants in the earliest days of agriculture, the daily schedule was: work in field all day, eat midday meal in field, continue working in field. Today, after centuries of human advancement, it goes something like: work in coffee shop all day, buy and eat lunch there, continue working on laptop until the sun sets. Though it may seem like the tech boom and gig economy(临时工经济) led the way in this modern mobile work style, working and dining have always been closely connected. In major cities like New York, Washington D.C., Sydney and Hong Kong, restaurants are changing into official co-working spaces during off-peak hours.
Dr. Megan Elias, director of the gastronomy program at Boston University, says food and business have been linked since as far back as the ancient Sumer (who established civilization as we know it around 4000 B.C.) “What we think of as street food has always been part of human civilization,” she says. “There have always been marketplaces where humans came together to conduct some kind of business — like trading grain, trading animals or building houses. As long as there have been marketplaces, people have been eating at them while also doing business.”
The first example of a brick-and-mortar “restaurant” came during the merchant economy in the 15th and 16th centuries, according to Elias. During this stage in European, African, and East and South Asian history, inns allowed merchant businessmen to rest — and of course, eat — throughout their travels. During the colonial era of the 1600s and 1700s, concrete examples of American restaurants emerged as “Coffee Houses”. Coffee Houses were places that had newspapers, which at the time were very small and commercial,” author and social historian Jan Whitaker explains.
Coffee houses remained tradesman staples throughout the early 19th century, with simple menu items like rolls and meat pies. More “grand meals,” as Elias calls them, were still taking place within homes for non-traveling folk. But, when the U.S. began industrializing in the 1840s and people stayed near workplaces during the day, eating establishments popped up around factories.
“Industrialization of the city is also restaurantization of the city,” Elias says. “Places sprung up to serve a business lunch crowd and an after-work dining crowd again, still doing business.”

【推荐2】At the Santos family’s apartment in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the doorbell is constantly ringing. All the friends and neighbors are there to hear what happened to two-year-old Carmelita. Her mother has tears in her eyes, but they are tears of relief, of thankfulness. Her Carmelita is smiling shyly, safe in her father’s lap.
The story could easily have ended very differently, not so happily. It all started this morning just before noon. Mrs. Santos was returning from the supermarket with her daughter and a friend, their neighbor. They stopped on the stairway of their building at their fifth-floor apartment. The neighbor opened her door first, and little Carmelita ran past her. She knew the apartment well, since she had visited it many times. The friend put down her keys and shopping bags, and turned back a moment to Mrs. Santos.
At that moment, there was a sudden gust of wind and the door to the apartment slammed shut. Carmelita was inside, alone.
Then the friend remembered that she had left her kitchen window open. She and Mrs. Santos rushed to the Santos apartment and telephoned the police. But there was no time to get help in opening the neighboring apartment. They could see that Carmelita was already leaning out of the kitchen window. She had climbed onto a chair, and soon she was climbing out onto the window sill(窗台).
Mrs. Santos called to Carmelita to go back inside. But the little girl did not understand the danger and did not want to go back. She only waved to her mother.
Then she lost her balance and her feet slipped off the window sill. She managed to hold on for a while with her hands, but she began to be afraid. Her mother screamed for help, and now Carmelita was crying desperately.
And then she could hold on no longer. Several people had run out into the street on hearing all the screaming. They saw the child hanging onto the window sill and got ready to catch her. Down she fell, five long stories and landed safe and sound in the arms of three strong men. They were Luis, Augusto, and Alfonso Nunes, father and sons. When they heard the screams, they ran from their auto repair shop across the street.
“I never thought we’d do it,” said Alfonso afterwards. “But I kept thinking, if we don’t catch her, she’ll die and I’ll feel sad and guilty all my life.”
All the neighbors want to shake hands with the three heroes. Carmelita’s parents cannot believe how close they came to losing their daughter. And how lucky they are to have her still.

【推荐3】On a bright early summer morning, many young swimmers gather at a local swimming pool in the state of Maryland. They are members of a competitive summer swim team, and that’s a regular part of their daily life. As they train and cut seconds off their times, which makes them closer to the championship in the following large-scale (大规模的) competitions, they are getting lots of physical exercise and vitamin D from the sun. However, the benefits of belonging to a sports team are not just honor or health related. You can learn useful life skills.
Paul Waas, coach of the swim team, explains, “The discipline (自制力) comes into play when you’re talking about concentrating on the details that your coaches are saying as it makes you faster rather than going up and down the pool the same way you have every time. When you focus on what you’re doing right and what you can do better, then you’ll see the improvement.”
Besides, there is also responsibility, goals and workings within a group. Again, here is Coach Waas. “It’s really great! It’s so fun to watch from year to year. I’ve had kids who as 7-year-olds on the team could barely pay attention in practice and were only interested in who was going first. Now they’ve come back as 8-year-olds, having set some goals and having things that they want to achieve. These skills can help them a lot.”
But playing the sports is not without harm. Some can be hard on the body. Young athletes suffer serious injuries that follow them into adulthood. Coach Waas says that in fact, swimming is different from most others. First, it poses a lower risk of injury. The second one relates to how swim teams are structured. Actually, children are not the only ones who can benefit. Adults can also benefit from team sports.
