Visitors to Waikiki Beach may do a double-take at the four-legged surfer boarding on shore, but the regulars aren’t amazed at all. They know the eight-year-old dog is Bugsy, a local legend, whose owner, David Yew, taught the dog to surf.
Yew, 39, got the idea while he and Bugsy were out walking on the beach and came upon a statue of a surfer. Yew put the dog down on the surfboard to take a photo, and the scene looked so natural that Yew was inspired to take the next step. Soon enough, the two were surfing together. Bugsy ran right to the front of the board with his paws.
The two ride an 11-foot, rubber-padded longboard. He loves the water and dog-paddles. However, Bugsy wasn’t always so active. Two days after Yew, a doctor of emergency medicine, adopted the 12-week-old puppy from shelter, Bugsy came down with cough, which progressed to pneumonia(肺炎). Yew rushed the dog to the ICU of a vet hospital where he stayed until Yew could no longer afford to keep him there. Bugsy needed further treatment, so Yew built his own ICU in his apartment. He covered an empty fish tank with plastic to use it for treatments. Finally, Bugsy pulled through.
Since then, the doctor and the dog have been inseparable. "Saving Bugsy’s life created unconditional trust between us,” Yew says. “He knows I’ll take care of him no matter what.” That may be what fuels Bugsy’s spirit. The pair surf together every week and have shared other adventures, including skydiving.

Head movements
In some parts of India, people shake their heads to show they are actively listening or agree with you.In western countries, people nod to confirm. However,in Bulgaria and Greece, nodding actually means the contrary.
Eye contacts
Some countries, such as Japan and Finland, consider constant eye contact awkward. In Caribbean cultures, children and teenagers are taught not to look at adults in the eyes when they are being corrected. Strong eye contact is common among people of the same sex in Spain and
Arabic countries.Hands

Greetings and goodbyes
Shaking hands is a normal and formal way to greet or say goodbye in western countries. But in Romania, only men usually shake hands. And they do it every time they meet, not just the first! In England, however,it's unusual to shake hands with someone you are introduced to in an informal setting.
Legs
Sitting with crossed legs is common in North America and European countries, but it is considered disrespectful in Asia and the Middle East where a straight and balanced posture is the norm(规范)。Body language varies from country to country. 【推荐2】FIRE-FIGHTING
How to fight a fire
Anyone who uses fire-extinguishers should know a few basic facts about how to make them work. This leaflet will tell you the most important things to remember if you have to put a fire out.
Water extinguishers
You can put most fires out with water extinguishers. However, you should not use water extinguishers if the fire involves electrical equipment or if it has been started by flammable (易燃的) liquids such as petrol.
As in all fires, make sure that the wind is behind you — if you do this, the smoke will blow away from you. Point the jet of water at the bottom of the fire and move it slowly higher.
Remember that you should only use extinguishers for small fires. If there is any danger of the fire spreading to anything that can explode, you should not try to put the fire out yourself. Instead, leave the building immediately, and call the fire brigade.
Foam (泡沫) extinguishers
You can use a foam extinguisher for fire caused by burning liquids such as petrol. Never point the jet directly into the liquid itself, as this may make it splash and spread the fire. Instead, try and point the extinguisher up into the air so that the foam goes up and falls on top of the burning liquid.
Whatever the kind of fire, do not stand up straight — if you can stay down, this will help you to avoid the smoke, and you may be able to get closer to the fire. Get out of the building at once if you think your escape route might be cut off by smoke or fire.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers
Some fire extinguishers are filled with a gas called carbon dioxide. You can use these to put out fires which have been caused either by electrical equipment or flammable liquids. If the fire has been caused by electrical equipment, switch the equipment off and point the extinguisher straight at the fire. If the fire has been caused by a liquid like petrol, point the extinguisher at the nearest edge of the fire, and move it from side to side.
Remember, never stay in a building if it is dangerous to do so, or if the fire grows beyond your control. Make sure you are standing near an exit in case this happens.
1. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A.You cannot put all fires out with water extinguishers. |
B.In case of fire, stay down to protect yourself from the smoke. |
C.If the fire might cause any further explosion, ask for professional help. |

A.Inappropriate use of fire extinguishers might make things worse. |

【推荐3】New research linked outdoor air pollution to an increased risk of diabetes (糖尿病) globally, according to a study from Washington University in St. Louis and the Veterans Affairs (VA) St. Louis Health Care System. The findings raised the possibility that reducing pollution might lead to a drop in diabetes cases.
“Our research shows a significant link between air pollution and diabetes globally,” said Ziyad Al-Aly, a professor at Washington University. “We found an increased risk, even at low levels of air pollution currently considered safe by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). This is important because many industry groups argue that current levels are too strict. Evidence shows that current levels are still not sufficiently safe and need tightening.” The findings were published on June 29 in The Lancet Planetary Health.
To evaluate outdoor air pollution, the researchers looked at small pieces of dust, smoke and liquid droplets. In diabetes, pollution was thought to reduce insulin (胰岛素) production and prevent the body from changing blood glucose (葡萄糖) into energy that the body needed to maintain health.
The researchers also found that poverty-stricken countries faced a higher diabetes-pollution risk including Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and Guyana, while richer countries such as France, Finland and Iceland experienced a lower risk. The US experienced a middle risk of pollution-related diabetes.
In the US, the EPA’s pollution limit was 12 micrograms per cubic meter of air, the highest level of air pollution considered safe for the public, as was set by the Clean Air Act of 1990 and was updated in 2012. However, using mathematical models, Al-Aly’s team set an increased diabetes risk at 2.4 micrograms per cubic meter of air. Based on VA data, among a sample of citizens exposed to pollution at a level of between 5 to 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air, about 21 percent developed diabetes.
“The team in St. Louis is doing important research to firm up links between pollution and health conditions such as diabetes,” said commission member Philip J. Landrigan, MD, a pediatrician and epidemiologist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. “I believe their research will have a significant global effect.”
1. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?A.Diabetes had little to do with outdoor air pollution. |
B.Reducing pollution might lead to a lot of diabetes cases. |
C.Air pollution contributed significantly to diabetes globally. |
D.Low-level air pollution was always considered safe by WHO. |
A.By reducing insulin production. |
B.By analyzing small matter in the air. |
C.By connecting diabetes and pollution. |
D.By checking blood glucose in the body. |
A.To present a result. | B.To support his idea. |
C.To make a comparison. | D.To draw a conclusion. |
