Another disappointing day was passing, and he was driving his beat-up old car home. He was out all day looking for a job. It was getting dark and light snow was coming down, so he almost didn’t see the old lady standing on the side of the road. It was clear that she needed help. He pulled up in front of her obviously brand new and expensive car and got out.
While nobody had stopped to help for the last hour and there was a smile on his face, she was worried when he approached her. He didn’t look safe. He looked poor and hungry.
He could see she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in your car to keep warm? My name is Bryan.”
A tire was flat. Bryan fetched tools from his own car to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening her car’s nuts, she rolled down the window, said thanks and asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened without his help.
Bryan never thought twice about the money. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home.
Soon the lady saw a small restaurant. She went in to grab a bite to eat and warm up before she made the last leg of her trip home. The waitress came over with a sweet smile and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant(怀孕的). Although the waitress looked tired and walked painfully due to the pregnancy, she still served the lady.

Lucas was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Lucas didn’t wear boots; or rather, he didn’t own any. The thin sneakers (运动鞋) he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Lucas had been in his backyard for about an hour already. He tried hard, but he could not come up with an idea for his mother’s Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless. Even if l do come up with an idea, I don’t have any money for a gift.”
Wiping tears from his eyes, Lucas started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn’t easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.
Lucas walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Lucas unwillingly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (闪光) of the setting suns rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (一角硬币).
Never before had anyone felt as wealthy as Lucas did at that moment. As he held his newly found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him. Lucas presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother’s Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Lucas and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Lucas’s shoulder, saying, “You just wait here and I’ll see what I can do for you.”
The sound of the door closing as the last customer left pulled Lucas back to reality. All alone in the shop, he began to feel alone and afraid.

My mom was a kind woman. She had an unusual view on helping others that I didn’t really understand until one cold, winter day when we picked up my brothers at school.
“Who is that child?” Mom pointed at a skinny, angry-looking girl across the street. “She doesn’t even have a coat. It’s freezing!” “That’s Becky Ingler. She always looks mad like that,” I replied. Becky didn’t have a father, and everybody laughed at her. “I’ll visit her tomorrow,” Mom said.
The next day, we went to the Inglers’ house. A tired-looking woman appeared, and Mom smiled, “Hello, Mrs. Ingler. I’m just visiting some of our neighbors.” Once inside, I noticed there was a rusty coal stove and a big messy bed. Mom looked at each of the children carefully.
As we left, Mom told Mrs. Ingler she would visit them again soon.
Mom’s old sewing machine (缝纫机) worked for two days and nights to turn some shabby clothes into stylish winter coats. She said to me, “I need your help to send these coats to the Inglers this afternoon.”
“Wow!” I said. “They’re lucky to get these.”
“No,” said Mom as she faced me. “We’re the lucky ones to be able to help them. We must make sure these coats are given freely, without the Inglers paying a price for them.” I didn’t understand what Mom meant. Mom explained, “I don’t want these coats to cost them their pride or dignity (尊严). We can’t show we are somehow better than they are.”
I asked Mom what we should do if they refused the coats. Mom smiled and said, “I have a plan in mind.”

Hiking trails (小径) can be fun and relaxing, but sometimes can also be challenging and dangerous.
Rogers, 33, was in town from New York for adventures on Boston trails. Even he had just taken a sharp turn on his mountain bike when he was stopped by the sight of a woman sitting on the side of the trail. She was cute with long blond hair and big expressive eyes. What he didn’t know was that she was also in extreme pain.
Sydney Linden, 28, had been jogging down Adobe Jack Trail for a splendid sunset view of the Red Rocks when she hopped (单腿跳) over a rock and her leg over extended on the landing. The pain was instant. Her right leg collapsed (倒塌) and she hit the dirt hard. Linden tried to stand but collapsed. She wasn’t sure if she had broken her leg, or something else. All she knew was that the pain was a 15 out of 10.
Linden dragged herself to the shade and called a friend, but after 30 minutes, her friend was lost. And the sun beat down cruelly. That’s when she saw the mountain biker.
Rogers was trying to play it cool. He casually rode by at a slower speed, stealing a glance at the woman. Sensing her suffering, Rogers stopped and asked if he could help. Linden explained her situation and that’s when he noticed the swelling (肿胀处) under her leggings. She needed a hospital now.
Rogers helped Linden to her feet and they began to cross the rocky region and desert bushes. It was a long way to go. Leaning on Rogers, Linden tried to hop along, but the pain was severe. She would never make it to the foot of the hill this way.

Whether we were exploring new places, laughing until our stomachs hurt, or comforting each other during tough times, our connection grew stronger than anything else in the world. We shared secrets, countless adventures, and, most importantly, our dreams. Both of us aspired to be actresses, and our personalities were equally strong. We were determined and ambitious, always striving to be the best in everything we did.
One day, our school announced an important drama festival, and the highlight of the event was the selection of the leading lady. Hannah and I both set our sights on this prestigious role. As the audition(试镜) approached, our friendship faced a significant test.
The day of the audition arrived, and the tension between us was obvious. We both delivered outstanding performances that left the judges impressed. However, when the final decision was announced, I was devastated to hear that Hannah had been chosen as the leading lady.
The aftermath of the announcement was challenging for me. My ego got the better of me, and I couldn’t handle the overwhelming feeling of being left out. As I saw everyone around us celebrating Hannah’s success, I felt a wave of shame washing over me. Unable to hold back my tears, I impulsively ran out of the audition hall.
Moments later, my phone rang, and I saw that it was Hannah calling. She must have known that I had left. I hesitated, unsure of what to say to her.

Kenneth Hansen, 46, was working late one May evening two years ago, putting the last pieces of board on a house in Gratiot County, Michigan. He saw a boy crazily waving his arms. Then Hansen heard screaming. Standing on the back porch (门廊)of the house next door was the little boy screaming "Help!", while four dogs barked and ran after him. Hansen knew little about the boy. After all, the boy was just visiting his grandfather during holidays.
At first, Hansen thought it was just a dogfight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they're biting something. His feeling proved right when he watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and bit at the boy's leg.
Then, Hansen realized the boy was in a great danger. He raced across the grass, jumped over a six-foot-high fence and landed in the neighbor's yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. He screamed and yelled louder until they let go just long enough for Henson to grab the eight-year-old boy, Ethan. But he couldn't grab him under his arms, which would make it harder to run, because the boy was badly injured. Luckily, He found a long wooden stick at the corner. Henson used it to drive the dogs away and held the boy into his arms.
Hansen ran fast across the yard, and the dogs followed him. Hansen ran to the back deck (木制平台). So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a courtyard door, but it wouldn't open. At that time, a dog grabbed Ethan's foot again to get him back from Hansen. Then Hansen pulled on a second door. It sprang open. He rushed inside the house, followed closely by the dogs scratching (抓)at his legs. He opened a bedroom door a crack, pushed Ethan in quickly, then closed it immediately.

She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Jenny was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. She even won a soccer championship with her teammates last year. But this particular swimming competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let her teammates down.
When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Jenny was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.
She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though she got butterflies in her stomach. Jenny’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.”
“I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Jenny replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.
Jenny’s mom sensed her daughter’s worry and gave her a comforting pat on the back. “You’ll be great, dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”
Jenny felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother’s kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had disappeared. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition.
