Also known as the Jimmy Awards, the awards were named to remember James M. Nederlander, a theatre owner and Broadway producer who died in 2016.
Feldman won the award for Best Performance by an Actor for playing Frank Abagnale Jr. in LWA’s production of “Catch Me If You Can.” He and Reneé Rapp each received a $10,000 scholarship. Rapp from Charlotte, North Carolina, is the winner of the Best Performance by an Actress award. The other remaining seventy-eight finalists received $3,000 scholarships.
The finalists received a week of training at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts(TSOA) before the awards event. Instructors from Broadway taught them basic skills of performing arts.
Feldman also won the Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Scholarship. Carnegie Mellon University, based in Pittsburgh, was founded in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie. Feldman received an additional $7,500 to attend the university’s six-week summer play program.
He has been a Broadway lover since seeing “Beauty and the Beast” when he was young. And then he performed in his first play, a production of “Annie” at eight.
The shock of winning had still not disappeared. “Winning the Jimmy Award is not something I even imagined,” Feldman said. “I didn’t think it could actually happen! It’s now been about a week and a half and I still don’t believe it.”
In 2014, Feldman created a theatre company called Zneefrock Productions. The company was run totally by teens. It was set up to raise money for NEXT for Autism, an organization helping to support autism programs.

In order to survive, the United Earth Government installs about 10,000 giant engines on the Earth to power it away from its initial orbit and flee to Alpha Centauri. The whole trip is expected to last 2,500 years, during which time humankind will go through about 100 generations. Yet, as the Earth approaches Jupiter, the gas giant's huge gravitational force captures the planet and threatens to tear the Earth apart within days. Who will save the world?
This imaginative tale is at the heart of the science-fiction movie The Wandering Earth. The original novel was written by Liu Cixin, one of China's most remarkable science-fiction writers and a winner of the 2015 Hugo Award for his novel The Three-Body Problem. Unlike many American space-themed films where the solution to a disaster the Earth faces is always fleeing the planet, people in the film are taking the Earth with them. The film, which is the country's most successful science-fiction film of all time, has offered a different and more ambitious idea. The “ambition” doesn't come from nowhere. For thousands of years, the “homeland” has taken roots in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom that shows a strong feeling that Chinese people have had for their homeland is “luoyeguigen”, which means returning to one's homeland at an old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree.
More importantly, The Wandering Earth is the first “made-in-China” science-fiction movie on the big screen, as the original novel was written by a Chinese author and the director, Guo Fan, is also Chinese. That's just the point. It means domestic movie production teams have matured enough to develop new ideas on the creative basis of science-fiction writers, while the writers are willing to work together with movie productions so that the film results in the best possible performance. Liu may be a highly regarded science- fiction writer in China, but he is not the only one. There are many more writers with rich imaginations, and their works can be adapted for movies as well.

C.To explore ways to avoid the disaster. | D.To introduce the topic of the passage. |

Jo-Anne Bachorowski and her research team recorded the laughter of 97 volunteers. The volunteers watched clips ( 电影片段) from funny movies. The scientists were surprised at the variety of sounds people made when they laughed. Rarely did they hear sounds that we stereotype as laughter such as “tee hee hee” or “ho ho ho.” More often they heard vowel (元音) sounds such as those heard in “car” (aah) or “glow” (ooh). What’s more, women tended to laugh in a more sing-song way, while men more often grunted (发出哼声).
The researchers caution that this work was limited to people in the United States, so the results may not be universal. Bachorowski predicts that cultural influences may affect what causes people to laugh, but it probably does not change how we laugh.
Although we do laugh at jokes and funny movies, 80% of our laughter occurs during everyday comments in everyday social situations. Robert Provine, a neuroscientist who studies laughter, went to places such as shopping malls and collected more than 1, 200 conversations. He found that the person speaking laughed 46% more than the listeners and that women laughed more often than men. Furthermore, the response to the speaker depended on the speaker’s gender. People, whether male or female, laughed more readily in response to a male speaker. The researchers also observed that laughter rarely interrupted speech. Instead, laughter came at the end of a phrase, much like punctuation following a written sentence.
Humans may be “tuned ( 使协调)” for laughter much in the same way that songbirds are “tuned” for song — especially their own specific family song. Certain nerve cells (神经细胞) in the songbird’s brain “fire” in response to hearing his song. Perhaps humans have specialized nerve cells that respond to laughter. After all, laughter is a specialized vocalization, and we are “tuned” to respond to vocalizations in language.

August was created by technology entrepreneur (企业家)Jason Johnson and industrial designer Yves Behar, and the product will finally go on sale in Apple Stores this week. It is made of “durable anodized aluminum”and can be started and managed using a mobile app and online. It is connected to the existing door lock and is battery operated.
To open the lock, anyone with a code can approach the door, enable their phones’ Bluetooth and press the relevant (相关的))address from the app. The lock takes a few seconds to scan and confirm the visitors’ identity. Once the identity is confirmed, the circle of red dots on the front of the device turns green and the August lock twists (转动)to open the door.
The makers claim that it takes just 10 minutes to install. To allow keyless access to friends, family and other visitors, the homeowner must send them an invitation. This can be done using existing contacts from the homeowner’s phone’s address book, but other persons must have the August app to receive the unique code of the lock from the homeowner.
When someone enters the house, the homeowner is sent a push notice. Another notice is sent when the person leaves. This means homeowners can keep track of how long cleaners or builders spend in the house and every visitor’s details and visiting information is stored on a Log.

But now the traditional Sunday roast seems to have been left back in the old days. According to the Daily Mail, just one in 50 British families sits down to this weekly meal together.
There are many reasons why the roast is becoming less popular. In the busy modern world, where breakfast is a slice of toast eaten on the way to work or school and lunch is a quick sandwich in front of the computer screen, people just don’t seem to have the time or patience to make a roast.
And Sunday was once a day when people could easily go to the kitchen to cook. Nowadays, people are often out shopping or at the cinema until it’s far too late to start thinking about heating the oven (烤箱) up.
However, a recent article from The Telegraph warned against being carried away by our tight schedules: “It would be a shame to let this fine old tradition disappear.”
The Guardian further explained that the eating of the big meal is only the half of it. The Sunday roast also makes for relaxed morning activities in the kitchen, and the table becomes the perfect place to share good food and chat with family and friends. “For busy moms and dads, even if you can manage to turn off your mobile phone and the TV only once a week and turn the Sunday roast into a real family event, children can have fun cooking the food and clearing up together.”
1. Why do people pay less attention to Sunday roast?A.They have a busy lifestyle. |
B.They have no interest in cooking. |
C.They don’t think it worthwhile. |

In 1999, the eastern state of Odisha was hit by a supercyclone (超级飓风). “Our homes and standing crops were destroyed. There was no food or clothing for days,” 52-year-old Charulata Biswal, a volunteer forest protector, told Mongabay-India. “But we realized it was because of the surviving forest that many people in Gundalba, a small village, were still alive. We promised we would protect the forest in return and restore the biodiversity.”
Groups of women patrol the forest at least twice a day. As they walk among the trees, they blow their whistles and bang wooden sticks against tree trunks. “We beat our sticks and patrol in groups of 10,” Biswal said. “We spread out inside the forest and blow whistles. Anyone with the intention to harm the local biodiversity will flee on hearing our whistle and the banging of our sticks on tree trunks.”
In 2001, over 70 women from Gundalba came together to form the Women’s Forest Protection Committee. Apart from their daily patrols, they also approached neighboring villages that also depend on the forest for firewood about setting up a system for sustainability (可持续性). For example, every village is allowed to gather firewood from the forest on a set day of the month, usually a few days after another settlement has finished the gathering process.
Over the years, they have caught several people cutting trees illegally in the forest. Asked if they have ever been afraid of patrolling the large forest they said no. “The forest is an extension of our home,” Biswal said. “Won’t it hurt to see your children suffer? This is how a mother feels and we are doing something that comes to us naturally.”
Thanks to the women’s efforts, the forest gradually came back to life. Birds started nesting in trees again and the animals returned.

【推荐2】It’s at this time of the year that marathon recovery, not marathon training, starts to take center stage.
Research indicates that the muscle damage from running a marathon can last up to two weeks. The research also indicates that muscle soreness(肌肉酸痛)is not a good indicator of muscular healing. In other words, just because you aren’t sore anymore doesn’t mean that you are fully healed. This is the danger for marathon runners: post-marathon muscular soreness fades after a few days but minor damage within the muscle cells remains. If you return to full training too soon — running more and faster than the tissues are ready for — you risk delaying full recovery and the chance to get ready for your next goal.
The solution, it appears, is to recognize(and accept)that the muscles will take a while to heal and to be prepared to take it easy for the first couple of weeks (even longer if you’re particularly sore after your marathon). While the research isn’t very promising when it comes to things to do to reduce soreness and aid healing, a couple of concepts appear to help. First, providing gentle blood flow to the area helps bring healing nutrients into the muscles and also helps to remove waste products and damaged tissue. Walking and gentle massage(按摩)can help, particularly in the first few days after a marathon. Once muscle soreness has significantly reduced (usually two to four days after the race), light jogging can commence. Just be mindful to run very slowly.
No runner wants to get super fit and then lose that during the recovery process. But since you must reduce your training load following your marathon, it can be difficult as to how much and how soon to insert running into your post-marathon training.
1. When should marathon runners return to full training?A.About half a month after the competition. |
B.A few days after soreness disappears. |
C.Before the tissues recover completely. |
D.Before the next game draws closer. |

The Lactalis Group is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of dairy products. It said French health officials warned the company that 26 babies had been sickened with salmonella (沙门氏菌) since December 1,2017.
The French Ministry of the Economy ordered the suspension of marketing and export of several baby products made at a Lactalis factory in Craon, France. It said all the products were manufactured after February 15, 2017, the French health ministry’s website says the recall affects nine countries in four continents: Britain and Greece in Europe; Morocco and Sudan in Africa; Peru and Colombia in South America; and Pakistan, Bangladesh and China in Asia. The United States, a major market for Lactalis products, is not affected.
A company spokesman told the Associated Press Monday that the recall is “precautionary (预防的)” and involves “several million” products. Lactalis noted in a statement that the 26 cases of infection were linked to products with the brand names Picot SL, Pepti Junior 1 , Milumel Bio 1 and Picot Riz. The statement included an apology and provided financial support to the families whose children were sickened. The company said it had taken measures to clean the area of the factory where the bacteria spread.
Infection with salmonella can cause sickness. Signs of infection include abdominal ( 腹 部 ) pain , diarrhea ( 腹泻) and higher-than-normal body temperature. The sickness is more dangerous among some populations, including the very young.
The Lactalis Group is a privately-held company. Its headquarters is in western France. Lactalis has 75, 000 employees in 85 countries and earnings of about 17 billion euros a year. Its famous brands include President and Galbani cheeses, as well as Parmalat milk.

【推荐3】Constantly regret spending too much time on your phone but just cannot stop? You are not alone. Here are five tips from Prof. Mark Griffiths, psychologist and behavioral addiction expert at Nottingham Trent University to help you live well with your phone.
Step it down gradually
The urge to check your phone can become reflexive and habitual. For some, going a few minutes without checking their phone is difficult. If this sounds like you, try to go 15 minutes without doing it. Once you realize this is possible, increase the length of time you avoid checking to 30 minutes, an hour, and then a few hours, or a day.
Monitor usage
Download an app that will tell you how much time you're spending online. This could make you aware of a problem—the first step to a solution.
Buy an alarm clock
Don’t use your phone as an alarm, or you might be tempted(诱惑) to check texts and emails last thing at night and as soon as you wake up. Instead, ban phones from the bedroom. Designate bedtimes and mealtimes as smartphone-free zones. Consider buying a clock, so you're no longer tempted by emails and texts when you check the time.
Spring clean your contacts
How many online friends do you actually speak to? Reduce alerts and distractions by removing contacts on social networking sites, deleting unused apps, and unsubscribing from groups that offer little benefit. Consider deleting any games that are taking up a lot of your time.
Learn to wait
Be mindful of the benefits of not regularly checking your phone. People who react to messages as they arrive tend to write longer responses than those who wait and deal with them all as a block. Waiting will gain you time to spend on other activities.
1. According to the passage, which of the following can help ban phones from the bed ?A.Monitoring usage. | B.Using a clock. |
C.Cleaning contacts. | D.Learning to wait. |
A.games take up more time than other apps |
B.reacting to messages in time is important |
