Most American students go to traditional public schools. There are about 88, 000 public schools all over the US. Some students attend about 3000 independent public schools called charter schools.
Charter schools are self-governing. Private companies operate some charter schools. They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools. They receive tax money just as other public schools do. Charter schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning. These governments provide the schools with the agreement called a charter that permits them to operate.
Charter schools are different because they do not have to obey most laws governing traditional public schools. Local state, or federal governments cannot tell them what to teach. Each school can choose its own goals and decide the ways it wants to reach them. Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools.
The Bush Administration strongly supports charter schools as a way to re-organize public schools that are failing to educate students. But some education agencies and unions oppose charter schools. One teachers’ union has just made public the results of the first national study comparing the progress of students in traditional schools and charter schools.
The American Federation of Teachers criticized the government’s delay in releasing the results of the study, which is called the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Union education experts say the study shows that charter school students performed worse on math and reading tests than students in regular public schools.
Some experts say the study is not a fair look at charter schools because students in those schools have more problems than students in traditional schools. Other education experts say the study results should make charter school officials demand improved student progress.

The store raises funds for this very special program that fires children’s imagination.
The youth aged 8 to 18 enter the Ministry, through a secret door that is designed to open up a world of opportunity by encouraging a love for writing. The organization believes that, “Writing increases self-respect, improves communication and can change lives.” That’s because writing allows children’s voices to be heard.
This year, the workshop is celebrating 10 years of helping children discover a love for writing through creative programs. Founded by Lucy Macnab, Ben Payne and best-selling author Nick Hornby, the organization works with around 1,000 children per year participating in school activities, and community projects across Hackney, Islington, and Tower Hamlets. It now has over 400 volunteers and runs its program free of charge for the youth of the areas.
“Through a range of creative writing programs, and one-to-one mentoring, we aim to help children find their own qualities that can be developed,” Macnab told The Telegraph. “We help children build confidence, self-respect, and communication skills in both workshops and writing clubs.”
One 10-year participant, Nmeso, said that the weekly after-school club he attends at the Ministry has helped him develop his imagination and improve his academic performance. In fact, he was able to move up a grade in school. What’s even more remarkable is that Meso has had a story he wrote published — along with other writers in the program — titled Andre Has a Hard Time. This is Nmeso’s success story.

But just a 45minute bus ride south to the county of Lishui, visitors will be surrounded by mountains full of tea leaf plants and strawberry fields. The strawberry fields are concentrated in a valley among Lishui's mountains called the Fujiabian Strawberry Fields. The tea and strawberry picking area is great for a fun family daytrip with the kids.
After over 10 years of Jiangnan rain, sun and humidity (湿度), the fields of greenhouses have firmly taken root. Lishui holds annual strawberry festivals typically from around midFebruary until the end of April, though the weather can be a bit cold and the fruit is not yet ripe around this time. The best time to go is late April and early May, when the strawberries are ripe but the temperature inside the greenhouses is not yet sweltering. If you go from June to August, the temperature will be around 35 degrees Celsius inside the greenhouse.
All of the strawberry greenhouses are locally run and open to the public. Owners of most greenhouses will give strawberry pickers a manageable box with handles to fill with strawberries. When guests are finished picking berries, the box is weighed and paid for by weight. A full box of fresh strawberries will run you about 25-30 RMB.
Local farmers have set up many small homecooking style halls and cafes both on the mountain side and among the strawberry fields. One of the best parts of countryside trips is always the local food and this area of Jiangsu is bound to serve local river longfish, the base of young bamboo plants, local pig's leg and strawberry juice. Cafes on the mountain will also serve the locally grown and fresh picked tea.
Add: Fujiabian Strawberry Fields, Lishui County, Dajinshan Scenic Area, Nanjing
Opening times: Daylight hours, midFebruary through October
Price: Tickets to Fujiabian Strawberry Garden cost 22 RMB.

Common sense says “perhaps there’s nothing on the planet that looks like it”. Without doubt, there’s nothing in the world that resembles it. The rock-carved rose-red town of Petra is filled with a mysterious charm that had been “designed to strike wonder into all who entered it”.
Petra is the legacy from the Nabataeans, a hard-working group of Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. Admired then because of their culture, architecture and complex dams and water channels, Petra has become a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) world heritage site and listed in the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Petra is the most well-known site in Jordan located about 262 km south of Amman and 133 km north of Aqaba. The Dead Sea is 80 kilometres north of it. The steeply rising sides of a long, cool, dark and narrow gorge basically keep the sunlight out. Suddenly the gorge opens right into a natural square covered with Petra’s most well-known monuments, which glows in the bright sun. The ancient city shows the visitors its beautiful look. The town is large and the quality of the architecture is surprising. It leads someone to think about the creativity from the Nabataeans who made Petra their capital.
Petra was the top architectural site for more than 400 years until it was occupied by the Romans in 106 AD. It was seen first when discovered in 1812 after being lost through the 16th century for nearly 300 years! Petra has 800 monuments, including buildings, tombs, baths, halls, temples, and streets, which were mostly carved in the pretty sandstone. Petra sights are in their finest in the early morning and the late afternoon. Once the sun warms the colorful stones, you will see the majesty of Petra.

Respect Difference
The mere presence of individuals from different backgrounds with different points of view in your everyday life creates an atmosphere in which people can better respond to change.
Change Environments
A change in your everyday life may provide the force needed to change the direction of your thinking. For some people, small changes might help reorganize your desk or take a new route to work, whereas for others, more adjustments are required.
Shirt into Positivity
Unlike negative emotions that bring about specific reactions, positive emotions prompt us to broaden our attention, explore our environment, and open ourselves to absorbing information. Take a few moments to think about the things in your life that are going well and for which you are grateful; this will automatically brighten your mood-and free your brain.
Look as if You’ve Never Seen
A Zen Buddhist concept for approaching even routine situations as if you were encountering them for the first time, “beginner’s mind” allows you to remain open to new experiences despite any expertise you may have. For instance, when you brush your teeth, take a moment to look at the toothbrush as if you’ve never laid eyes on such an object and notice its color and shape. Think about the flavor of the toothpaste and notice how your mouth feels as you move the brush back and forth.
1. What may be the benefit of small changes in life?A.Reducing one’s workload. | B.Focusing one’s attention. |
C.Leading to adjustments. | D.Better responding to changes. |
A.By shifting into positivity. | B.By respecting difference. |
