The story of Kit Kat the dog
The first time the rescuers met kit Kat, we recalled in shock and our hearts instantly went out to him. At his tender age, life had already dealt him so many harsh blows. Not only was he left to care for himself in the wild, but he also suffered pain with a horrific rash (皮疹).
Kit Kat was first brought to our attention by Anna, one of our volunteers. Kit Kat was said to be frightened of people and we eventually managed to put a leash (皮带) on Kit Kat and take him to the vet after a few days’ effort of tricking him with treats. He was well padded and his coat, though matted (无光泽的), was in good condition. Kit Kat also had good oral health.
Now on the mend, Kit Kat boasts a coat of soft, glossy fur and shows no signs of the pain he suffered from. While we have managed to heal his body, we have not been able to do the same for his broken spirit. However, we believe that with the right family and the right environment, Kit Kat will be able to flourish and shake off his sad past.

“Whether” & “If”—Similarities
Both “whether” and “if can be used in reported speech with verbs such as “ask”. For example: “T asked her if I could take her car.” “I asked her whether I could take her car.” “She asked me if I spoke French.” “She asked me whether I spoke French.” “She asked if I liked it.” “She asked whether I liked it.” However, there are many other cases when it is only possible to use “whether”. Let’s see a few examples.
“Whether”
We use “whether” (and an infinitive with “to”) after the verbs “know” “ask” and “wonder” when there are two or more alternatives or options. For example: “I don’t know whether to go to the cinema or whether to go to the theatre.” It isn’t always necessary to mention the second “whether”. So, we could say the previous sentence like this: “I don’t know whether to go to the cinema or(whether) to go to the theatre.” You can also use “or not” instead of mentioning the other option: “I don’t know whether to go to the cinema or not.” We always use “whether” if there is a preposition: “We were thinking about whether we should go early or late.” And we often use “whether” when it is followed by an infinitive with “to”: “I was wondering whether to tell you or Steve.”
“If”
It is NOT possible to use “if” when there are two alternative options, particularly with expressions like “I’m not sure”, “I don’t know” and “wonder” plus an infinitive with “to”. For example: “I’m not sure whether to go to France or Italy.” It is NOT possible to say, “I’m not sure if...
“I don’t know whether to tell Michael or Sam.” It is NOT possible to say, “I don’t know if...
“I’ve been wondering whether to go by train or plane.” It is NOT possible to say, “I’ve been wondering if...

The new policy, announced Sunday, will first take effect in major cities, where many of the non-biodegradable(非生物降解的)plastics found in the world’s oceans originally come. The distribution of plastic bags is supposed to stop in large Chinese cities by the end of the year, whereas smaller cities and rural areas have until 2022.Among other items are single-use straws and many disposable(一次性的)items. The effort was described as a global “war on plastic”.
Between 1950 and 2015, plastic production has risen from 2 million tons annually to 381 million worldwide, which has seen a rise in policies to reduce dependence on plastics. Extremely strict steps have been taken in many places.
Last August, the Pakistani government banned all single-use plastic bags in the country’s capital region, home to some 1.5 million people. While environmental protection groups celebrated the move, industry representatives warned it would come at a huge financial cost “They should first find new jobs for the plastic factory workers and then ban the bags,”38-year-old fruit seller Nazeer Abbasi told The Washington Post last year.
Last spring, the European Parliament voted to ban many single-use plastic items-including plates, straws and cups — by 2021. It also voted to increase recycling targets. Many E.U. member states already have built systems to encourage customers to return plastic bottle for recycling.

On his way back inside he noticed a small shadow moving on the driveway. As Reece moved towards the shadow, he realised it was a young hedgehog(刺猬), all wet in the grass, eating mud. He quickly removed his jacket and picked it up. The hedgehog was very weak and unable to move about quickly. He didn’t seem to be frightened, nor did he resist being lifted.
Once inside, Reece called out to me, saying that he had something that would make my heart melt-he was right! We named the hedgehog Alf, and this little creature was amazingly intelligent. Not only did he learn to cat his dinner and drink water from his bowls, and use a paper-covered mat for his “business”, but he also learnt to wait for us inside his little indoor house and also jump into his pet carrier whenever we took him out with us. Alf knows us very well and recognises both our voices Unfortunately.in April 2014. I was caught in a car accident and had to spend two months in Auckland City Hospital. And I really missed Alf. Reece told me that Alf had been searching around the house for me, checking in places where I’d normally be, such as my desk, my favourite seat in front of the TV and even my side of the bed.
One evening, Reece set up a video call for me from my hospital bed and I was extremely happy when I saw the little guy appear on my phone. When I told Alf that I would be home soon, he started moving his head and holding out his arms as if trying to reach me through the screen.
The fact that Alf recognised that it was me, gave me the strength to get through my recovery. I cannot describe the feeling when I arrived home and saw his little face again.
