For this reason refrigerated meat is safe to eat for a significantly shorter amount of time than frozen meat. The temperature range from 40°F to 140°F (4.4°C to 60°C) is referred to as the“Danger Zone” by food safety experts. It is in this “zone” that bacteria increase, nearly doubling in a mere 20 minutes.A home refrigerator should be set at 40°F or colder to keep meat safe for the maximum amount of time. It is important to note that there are two different groups of bacteria that affect refrigerated meat. The first, pathogenic bacteria (致病细菌),make us sick, while the second, spoilage bacteria (腐坏细菌), make our food go bad and stink up our fridges. By sight, smell and taste, you cannot identify whether a meat is harboring pathogenic bacteria, unlike meat affected by spoilage bacteria.
In a refrigerated state, spoilage bacteria can grow. This is proven by the fact that all food in a refrigerator eventually spoils. Spoiled food won't make you sick - it might taste bad, but unless it has pathogenic bacteria, your digestive system is in the clear. Unrefrigerated meat, if left out on the counter for a few hours, might smell and look fine, but may be full of pathogenic bacteria. During a power-cut, food stored in a refrigerator that rises in temperature to over 40°F for more than two hours should be removed, Also, due to temperature change, don't store meat on the door. It is important to maintain your refrigerator's temperature by keeping the door closed as much as possible.
As always, follow proper cooking instructions when preparing any meat to kill any potentially harmful bacteria. The following is a list of how long certain refrigerated meats will be safe to eat cooked leftovers, four days; raw eggs, three to five weeks; hard boiled eggs, one week; salads, such as egg, macaroni, potato or tuna, three to five days; ham three to seven days; hot dogs, one week if opened, two weeks if unopened; fresh fish/shellfish, one to two days.
1. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?A.Both groups of bacteria can make us sick and nervous |
B.Putting meat in refrigerators can stop the growth of bacteria. |
C.it is safer to put meat in refrigerators with a temperature of 10°C |
D.It is easier to know whether meat with spoilage bacteria goes bad. |
A.You could get food poisoning. |
B.You may have a bad taste experience |
C.You may get a digestive system disease. |
D.You could get infected by pathogenic bacteria. |
A.Wash the meat over and over again. |
B.Cook the meat according to instructions. |
C.Leave the meat on the counter for a while |
D.Put the meat into a refrigerator before cooking |
A.Seven to ten days. | B.A week or so. | C.Three to five days. | D.Three to seven days. |

A team from the School of Dentistry' s Violence Research Group studied drinking habits inchildren aged | 1-16 in England. They found not only a link between drink and violence but also that children who drank were more likely to be hit, even if they weren' t violent themselves.
The researchers are now calling for measures to prevent alcohol misuse to reduce injury risk. Current policy focuses on reducing aggression but this research shows that there should be equal effort to reduce victimization(受害).
More than 4,000 children were surveyed at 13 schools at four local authorities in the North, the Midlands, London, and the South. The study found that 25% of 1 l-year-olds were drinking monthly and 3.6% daily, with 12.8% admitting to getting drunk 3 to 5 times a year. By the age of 16, 40% were drinking weekly and 6.2% were drinking every day. The research also showed 22.6% of 16-year-olds were getting drunk more than 21 times a year.
The study, which has just been published in the Journal of Adolescence, found a strong link between frequency of drinking and frequency of hitting other people.
However, children who reported drinking monthly were also three times more likely to be hit. Adolescents(青少年) who drank but didn't get into fights were more likely to be hit than those who did fight.
Professor Jonathan Shepherd, who led the research, said a lot of previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders rather than the victims. His team is calling for more pre-vention work from parents and teachers in the first two years of secondary school by taking advantage of the "teachable moment", that is, immediately after a student has missed school because of drunkenness.
Previous work by Professor Jonathan Shepherd has shown drinkers may be more at risk of vio-lence because of reduced physical co-ordinatlon ( 配合), poor decision-making in threatening situa-tions and isolation while out late at night.
He said,"This new study seems to be the first to show a direct link between alcohol misuses and victimization. There now needs to be much more effort put into reducing alcohol misuse in order to reduce injury. "

Research among computer users suggests that people have stopped using the traditional expression of gratitude(感激).
Almost half of those surveyed said they now use ‘cheers’ more often than ‘thank you’.
Four out of ten said ‘thank you’ sounded too formal and made people feel unnatural- so they used more attractive, chatty words such as ‘fab’, ‘lovely’ or ‘wicked’. A third said they would often just use a quick wave instead of saying ‘thank you’. And 77 percent said that any of the words used to say thanks were irrelevant, believing a pleasant gesture works just as well. The survey of 3,000 people was carried out by the online gift store Me to You.
Spokesman Caroline Weaver said, ‘While the great British public might feel uncomfortable saying thank you these days, they do like to show their gratitude in other ways. People in the survey felt it didn’t matter how you thanked someone for their kind actions, as long as you did so in a friendly and polite way. Most importantly, everyone knows that a big smile and some form of acknowledgment is all it takes to show we are grateful.’
Two thirds of people in the survey believed Britain was a ‘rude’ nation and 84 percent thought others should make more of an effort to show gratitude.
1. Among people surveyed, most ______.A.consider ‘thank you’ attractive words |
B.use ‘wicked’ more often than ‘thank you’ |
C.think a gesture can also express gratitude |

If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally cane to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values night help then see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

At 10: 46 am on that summer’s day, the quake hit with a magnitude of 7. 9 on the Richter scale(里氏震级). The centre of the quake lied some 15 to 20 kilometers north of the two main centers, Napier and Hastings. The quake lasted for two and a half minutes. Many people died in the earthquake.
A fire broke out immediately after the quake. The fire started in a chemist’s shop and spread quickly. Then the Fire Department in Napier came to help, but they were at a loss to control the fire as a result of losing their water supply. However, the water supply in Hastings, was still usable, allowing them to fight back against the fire.
The force of the earthquake destroyed many of the city’s famous landmarks. Chunks of the coastline were thrown into the sea. Napier’s Bluff Hill, a popular tourist spot, was completely destroyed and thrown into the waters below.
Most of the major buildings in the city were completely destroyed. Roads and communications across the whole area were cut. People were afraid to enter their homes for days and found shelters at the local Motor Camp or on the beach. There were about 150 aftershocks(余震)in the 24 hours after the main shock.
