“Congratulations!” he said. “You’re my first passenger and this is my first day as a taxi driver, but you don’t have to worry. In my job I had lots of driving experience and I know the city very well. “That’s good,” said Howard, “I’m sure you’ll be a good driver.”

William, who is currently a Lieutenant(中尉)in the Army's Household Cavalry Regiment(皇家骑兵团), will transfer to the RAF and begin an 18-month training course in January 2009.
If successful, he will become a fully operational Search and Rescue pilot in 2010, flying Sea King helicopters at one of the six SARF units based in Britain.
"The time I spent with the RAF earlier this year made me realize how much I love flying," the prince, who spent two weeks with a SARF team while on work experience in 2005, said in a statement.
"Joining Search and Rescue is a perfect opportunity for me to serve in the Forces operationally, while contributing to a vital part of the country's Emergency Services."
It means he will follow a similar career to that of his uncle, Prince Andrew, who was a Sea King helicopter pilot during the 1982 Falklands war.
The Search and Rescue teams' main duty is to recover RAF personnel but in peacetime they mainly respond to civilian emergencies, dealing with more than 1,000 calls a year.
The units deal with incidents ranging from helping those trapped by sudden major floods to rescuing people lost while out walking on hills
William, who has spent the last year on secondment(借调)to the various branches of the military to prepare for his future role as head of the armed forces, received his RAF wings (飞行勋章)following a four-month stint(持续的工作)with the service earlier this year.
However, his time with the RAF was clouded when the Defense Ministry was forced to fend off (挡开) criticism for allowing the prince to fly military helicopters to a bachelor party for his cousin and to the family home of his girlfriend Kate Middleton.

Right around this time every fall I get to spend the day with a family of St. Jude. I always say it’s the best day of the year and the hardest day of the year. And a few years back I met a little girl named Sawyer. She was seven at the time and I remember she had this pink little dress on and these big angelic eyeballs. The chemo (化疗) had taken all of her hair and she had these tiny little tumors (肿瘤) on her body that she called her “bumps”.
She was just with me the whole time as we ran through the script again and again and again. And at the end of the day after hearing the word repeated over and over again, she looked up at me with those big blue eyeballs and she asked me, “What is cancer?” I just looked at her. Oh! I’m not equipped to answer this question. Here was this little girl who was fighting this deadly disease every single day and she didn’t even know what was the word for it. It was just part of her reality and she was just making the absolute best of it.
That’s what’s unbelievable about these children. Despite everything that they ate up against and as much pain as they’re often in, they are lively. They are joyful. They are fearless. And that’s part of the magic of St. Jude. I’m so honored to support their work because they’re giving children the best care on the planet so that they can regain their childhood, so that they can find their little inner superhero. They’re doing it at no cost so that the families can focus on their little ones, live without worrying about crippling hospital bills and their cutting edge treatments will soon one day find a cure. And that is what every child deserves to know, that they are seen, that they are powerful and are loved, that they deserve a seat at the table, that anything they have to say or any question they have to ask is of value, even if we don’t have all the answers for it.
So thank you very much for recognizing the work of this remarkable organization and for celebrating the power in each and every one of us. Thank you.

The temperature at night is below 50 degrees and winds of 100 miles(161 kilometers) per hour cause severe dust storms. However, the surface of the planet seems to show that water flowed across it at some time in the past, and it is believed that there would be enough ice at the poles to cover the planet with water if it melted. Although there is no life on the Mars now, some scientists think there may have been some form of life a long time ago. At that time, the planet had active volcanoes(火山), the atmosphere was thicker and warmer, and there was water. In fact, in some ways the Mars may have been similar to the earth, where life exists.
Some people believe that the Mars could support life in the future if the right conditions were produced. The first step would be to warm the planet using certain gases which trap the sun’s heat in the planet’s atmosphere. With warmth, water and carbon dioxide, simple plants could begin to grow. These plants could slowly make the Mars fit to live on. It is judged that the whole process might take between 100, 000 and 200, 000 years. In the meantime, people could begin to live on the planet in a special closed environment. They would provide a lot of useful information about conditions on the Mars and the problems connected with living there.

Footballer Marcus Rashford’s petition(请愿书) to extend free school meals provision(供给) into the school holidays has collected 1.1 million signatures, causing the government to reverse policy. It has restarted the debate over free school meals, fuelled, most recently, by figures forecasting that if the government ends as planned the current £20 top-up(附加款), another 200,000 children will slip into poverty. This is in addition to the 550,000 children already living in poverty previous to Covid-19.
The roots of the current school meals system lie in the mid-19th century. In Manchester, independent charities as well as official bodies started to provide free meals for undernourished children in the 1870s. When education became compulsory in the following decades, the extent of the issue became apparent. Proponents of feeding starving children pointed out that it was due to government order that children were in school, not working and contributing to the family food budget, so the government should pay.
Reception was mixed. Then, as now, children rejected foods they weren’t used to. Diaries of the time talk of “little bags of mystery” (sausages). Some children were put off brassicas(芥菜类) for life. Finding the balance between cheap and good proved hard. The chief medical officer talked about the lack in calorie value and elements of a well-balanced diet which a needy child does not get at home, such as milk, cheese, eggs, green vegetables, fruit and meat”. In 1980, the Tory government, desperate to cut costs, made provision largely optional and abolished nutritional standards. Over the next 15 years convenience and cost became the most important.
Today, school meals provision is linked to benefits: in England around 17 per cent of children are entitled to free school meals. Provision is outsourced(外包), leading to huge variation. In the last year, we’ve seen all of the age-old debates repeated once more. How do we decide who is entitled? How do we guarantee quality? Who decides what children eat? Who pays? Undernutrition does not just have physical effects, but also affects behavior and ability to learn. It has a lifelong impact. The arguments around free school meals seem never to end. But they are hugely important and, until poverty is ended, they will not and should not go away.
1. Why did Marcus Rashford start the petition?A.To feed an increasing number of children in poverty. |
B.To restart the debate over free school meals. |
C.To raise fund for hunger relief for children. |
D.To lift children out of poverty. |
A.Officials. | B.Charities. |
C.Advocates. | D.Critics. |
A.Some children liked brassicas provided in the school. |
B.School meals were both tasty and cheap. |
C.School meals failed to meet children’s nutritional needs. |
D.The Tory government chose nutrition over cost. |
A.Never-ending. | B.Meaningless. |
C.Influential. | D.Necessary. |

As a young woman, Jane Goodall had no scientific knowledge but this didn’t stop her from following her childhood dream of studying chimpanzees in Africa. After many months of difficult work she found: chimpanzees eat meat, they use tools to get food and they also make tools. Every evening, Jane wrote her findings in a diary and she began to publish articles in journals. After a while, scientists started reading her studies and Jane was offered a place at a university. After more years of research she became Doctor Jane Goodall in 1966. There was a film Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees (1963) and then the first of many books called My Friends the Wild Chimpanzees (1969).
During the 1970s, Gombe became a dangerous place to work, where often there was fighting between soldiers. Many foreigners fled the region but Jane stayed. A different problem developed in Gombe in the 1980s. The human population in the region was increasing. As a result of this there were only about a hundred chimpanzees living in Gombe. Jane realised that something had to be done, so she set about helping the local community to grow more trees for them in the region.
After 1989, Jane started giving lectures, fighting against the cruelty to chimpanzees used in medical research laboratories. She was also busy setting up sanctuaries for chimps which had been caught or were orphans (孤儿) because of the trade in chimpanzee meat. Nowadays, she has very little spare time left but she still spends part of every year in the forest in Gombe, watching her chimpanzees.
