Chinese Dual Language Immersion Program (CDLIP)
What is Dual Language Immersion?
Dual language immersion provides academic instruction in two languages. The Pasadena Unified School District currently offers a Chinese-English immersion program.
Why Choose the CDLIP?
Learning a second language awakens curiosity and respect for other nations and their cultures. Chinese is not only a rich language with a long literary tradition, but it has also emerged as an influential worldwide language. Our CDLIP promotes cross- cultural sensitivity, so that students can learn about the globalized world. For native Chinese speakers, our program ensures full development and mastery of English language arts while helping them become more fluent in their mother tongue.
Our Classrooms
The CDLIP serves primary school students, from kindergarten through second grade. Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be added in September of 2022, 2023 and 2024, respectively. The program is currently located at Luther Burbank Primary School. On any given day, you might find a classroom full of kindergarteners counting and sorting coins, first graders singing “The More We Get Together”, or second graders describing physics experiments-all in Chinese!
How Does the Program Work?
CDLIP classrooms combine native and non-native speakers so that all students may succeed in both Chinese and English. We apply a Two-Way 90:10 Model. In kindergarten, 90% of the day’s instruction is in Chinese and 10% is devoted to improving English oral language and the ability to read and write. As children progress through grade levels, the percentage of English instruction gradually increases, finally achieving a 50:50 split by fifth grade.
To Register Your Child
Language learning is a long-term process, so parents are asked to register their children for the full six years.
● Register online at www.pusd.us/oe between June 13 and 23.
● The program is free, supported by the Pasadena Unified School District.
● For kindergarten, no knowledge of Chinese is necessary. (Some knowledge of Chinese is expected for students entering grades 1-3.)
● Applications will be accepted after the deadline if spaces are still available.
● If you would like assistance completing your application, please contact Ms. Netty Li at Burbank Primary School (626) 396-5760 or visit PUSD Welcome Center.

The guideline, published by Shanghai provides a rather clear definition(定义) on the four kinds of waste: recyclable waste, hazardous (有害的)waste, household food waste and residual (剩余的)waste.
Specific as the new guideline is, residents still have a hard time sorting trash correctly and are finding it challenging to memorize them all. "We should do this from a pig’s angle, "commented one netizen, "Those that can be eaten by pigs are household food waste. Those even pigs don't want to eat are residual waste. If a pig consumes something and dies of it,then something must be hazardous waste. Those that can be sold to gain some money used to purchase pigs are recyclable waste."
Garbage sorting is not only beneficial to the environment and a way of handling global warming, but is also good for business and industry. It saves energy. That's because it's cheaper to recover raw materials(原材料) from recycled waste than go through the former producing processes(过程).
One resident in Switzerland once said, "If you get used to it,it becomes normal. Now I don’t think much about it. It's become an instinct. " At present, those who do not sort their trash properly will be fined RMB200, but we hope one day the environmental protection will also become our instinct soon.

Promise Sawyers’ motivational video was posted online by her mom Qui Daugherty, after the 5th-grader secretly recorded it on Daugherty’s phone. In it, Sawyers explained that she was feeling “some type of way” after her classmates had mean things to say after she wore her natural hair the day before. But she was determined not to let it bring her down, and wore it the same way the following day. “Don’t allow anyone to steal your joy,” Promise said. “Don’t give them that much power.”
Daugherty says that Promise has been surrounded by that type of positivity her whole life. She’s always taught her daughter to “meet a negative with a positive”, even when somebody is trying to bring her down. And although this example seems like one of the more disheartening( 令人气馁的) ones that Promise has faced after starting at a new school, her video proved that she took her mom’s advice to heart.
Now, nearly 2 million views later, people everywhere are responding to the video. “We had no idea the impact that it was going to make and the amount of messages,” Daugherty said. “It’s made a huge impact behind the scenes that has blessed me personally.”
Daugherty jokes that Promise doesn’t understand how influential her words are. Instead, the 10-year-old is just excited about the millions of views.
“I just tell her not to focus on the numbers,” Daugherty says. “Let’s find a way we can be impactful behind this and make an influence and inspire people. That’s all we want.”

Researchers from University College London (UCL) found that people engaged in the arts more frequently had a 31% lower risk of dying early when compared to those who didn't. Even going to the theater or museum once or twice a year was linked with a 14% lower risk.
“While other health behaviors like smoking, alcohol and exercise are undoubtedly bigger predictors of the rate of death, these leisure and pleasure activities people don't think as a health related activity do support good health and long life,” said Fancourt, an associate professor at UCL’s Research Department of Behavioral Science and Health.
How often an individual engaged in art activities, also including exhibitions, concerts and opera but not cinema, was measured at the start of the study in 2004 to 2005. The study looked at a range of economic, health and social factors to try and explain why there is a link between “arts engagement” and living longer, although as an observational study it can't establish cause. Part of the reason, the study said, comes down to social and economic differences among those who go and don't go to museums, exhibitions and art galleries. Wealth, they found, explained about 9% of the association. Cognitive(认知的) differences, social engagement and mental health also played a role.
“Things like free time and occupational status made no material difference,” said Fancourt, “but engagement in arts can reduce stress and build creativity that allows people to adapt to changing circumstances. It also helps people build social capital — accessing emotional support and information that helps people age more successfully. A greater sense of purpose could also play a role. If this (study) is added to the larger body of evidence, we are getting an increasingly rich picture on how arts can benefit health and it's not about one single outcome. It can have wide ranging benefits and support healthier lives lived longer.”
This study did not look at the effects of taking part in art-related activities but a World Health Organization review of available evidence published last year found that both receptive participation, like visiting a museum, and active participation, like singing in a choir, had health benefits.

【推荐3】Think “art”. What comes to your mind? Is it Greek or Roman sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese paintings? Have you ever imagined it’s a dancing pattern of lights?
The artworks by American artist Janet Echelman look like colourful floating clouds when lit up at night. Visitors could not only enjoy looking at them but also interact with them literally — by using their phones to change the colors and patterns. But are they really art?
Whatever your opinion, we cannot deny art has existed for thousands of years and art and technology have always been two separate things.
Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology, changing the art world greatly. Now art is more accessible to us. For example, people used to queue six hours but spend limited time admiring the famous 5-metre Chinese painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival. Thanks to technology, however, viewers can leisurely experience a digital version of this painting, where the characters can move and interact with their surroundings.
The art-tech combination is also changing our concepts of “art” and the “artist”. Not only can we interact with art, but take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more people are exploring new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos. However, it has also raised questions over its overall quality. Can a video of someone slicing a tomato really be called “art”?
Similarly, such developments are making the line between art and technology less distinct. Can someone unfamiliar with traditional artists’ tools really call themselves an “artist”? And is the artist the creator of the art itself, or the maker of the technology behind it?
Where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure — with so many artists exploring new possibilities, we can definitely expect the unexpected.
1. How could viewers interact with Janet Echelman’s artworks?A.By talking to her on the phone. | B.By lighting up the artworks. |
C.By touching their phone screens. | D.By coloring the patterns. |
A.Achievements of China’s technology. |
B.The influence of art on technology. |
C.Interaction between viewers and art. |
D.Easier access to art caused by technology. |
A.It lowers the quality of artworks. |
B.It involves common people in innovation. |
C.It shortens the time of painting. |
D.It makes scientists the real creators of art. |
A.Regretful. | B.Objective. |
C.Disapproving. | D.Conservative. |
