When Lina was awoken by the sound of thunder, she was alone on the island. The air was cool and bullfrogs croaked. It was that brief moment when the summer sun had set but the stars hadn’t yet appeared. Lina rubbed her eyes and looked around. “Hello?” she called. “Celia? Marie?” There was no response.
The moon was rising now, shedding light on the island. They had always called it “Forgotten Island” because no one but they seemed to remember its existence. It wasn’t on any of the maps they could find, and even the forest rangers didn’t know about it. Lina loved that the island, hidden in a heavily-wooded side stream of the river, was a secret between the three friends---her, Celia, and Marie. But now Lina was here alone, and it was night. Worse still, it was her own fault.
“Come on, Lina, let Marie row the boat.” Celia had said. Marie was two years older than Lina, but she was a hopeless rower. That’s why Lina refused and rowed the boat to the island. The argument that followed the refusal took the usual form. Celia took Marie’s side, as she always did. Lina exploded and yelled at them to just leave. So they got back in the boat and left.
A bolt of lightning crossed the darkened sky, accompanied by a deafening thunder clap. The storm was here. As the first cold raindrop slid down her neck, Lina’s mind returned to her current problem. She was stuck here by herself. She just hoped she didn’t become as forgotten as the island. The thought of it sent a chill down her back.
Suddenly, Lina spotted something in the water. It was a boat, and inside it were Marie, Celia, and Marie’s dad, who was steering through the fast flowing waters. As the boat approached, they saw Lina waving and the worried expressions on their faces turned to relief.
In her excitement Lina jumped into the river. Only once she was in the icy water did she remember how fast the water was moving. Luckily a strong arm reached into the water and pulled her out. She smiled weakly at Marie’s dad and, without a word, hugged Celia and Marie. They didn’t seem to mind becoming wet.

A young girl, about 16 years old, approached me and asked if I could help her. She had travelled by herself from her boarding school and now she needed to get home to Kepong, north of KL. This happened before cellphones appeared.
After listening to her story, I lent her 20 dollars at once and told her to take a taxi straight to her home. She was much obliged and suggested getting my details so that she would repay me. I gave her my name and my address and then I left to catch my bus home.
When I related this experience to my roommate, Mike, he made fun of my getting foolish. He said, “Don’t you know? This is the oldest trick! I bet she is having a good laugh at your expense. Tut-tut! What do I care? You just lost your money.” “Oh, well, you weren’t there to see her desperation (绝望).” “Well, of course, she looked desperate. She had probably acted desperate many times before she met you.” And he didn’t stop teasing me the following days.
However, one week later, Mike handed me a letter. It was addressed to me, but on the other side of the envelope (信封), the neat writing was the young girl’s name with hearts and bows at the last line. I tore it open and read it immediately. The girl wrote me a nice letter, thanking me sincerely. And she told me that I would receive a money order three days later. Really I did. By the way, when my roommate knew the matter, the look on his face was really worth seeing.

When Arias began experiencing pains, she and her parents headed to the closest hospital, Baylor Scott & White. Arias gave birth to her daughter, Zaylynn, who weighed just over one pound and was in need of advanced special care. However, the hospital does not offer the specialized care premature babies require.
“We had five or six people out at the nurses’ station calling hospital networks all over the state of Texas,” said Meredith Schubert, the labor and delivery nurse on duty when Arias arrived. “Nobody could answer our cry for help.”
They finally reached Dr. John Loyd through a patient, division neonatologist (新生儿学专家) chief at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas. Around 5 p. m., after already having worked a full shift, Loyd packed his SUV with equipment and he and two nurses set out for Marble Falls, about 55miles away. The drive took Loyd and the nurses about two hours as they drove in the night through ice and snow.
After safely arriving at the medical center in Marble Falls around 8 p. m., the Dell Children’s crew set up a temporary newborn ICU. Together, the Dell Children’s and Baylor Scott & White teams worked around the clock to care for the mother and daughter.
Once the weather cleared enough to allow for a helicopter to safely land. Zaylynn was transferred (转移) to Dell Children’s, where there is a Level IV newborn intensive care unit (重症监护室).
Schubert said, “It was a huge relief and a sense of accomplishment and joy that Zaylynn finally got to the place where she needed to be.”

Everything she touched turned to gold. She won the class lottery and with it $50! She won every race she entered, every art competition, and every award the school offered. She had all the luck in the world.
Sarah was an only child. She wore hand-me-downs from her older cousin Clementine. She didn't have many friends. Her best friend Kiara was really the best in a lot of ways: kind, generous, and loyal. Just the kind of person you would want for a best friend. But Sarah most certainly did not have good luck. She never won anything. On the days she carried an umbrella, it never rained; on the days she forgot her umbrella, dark ruin clouds seemed to follow her around.
One rainy day in April, though, Sarah and Becky swapped luck. That's how Sarah thought of it anyway. It wasn't expected, and it certainly wasn't planned. But after weeks of wishing for it, Sarah woke up and things felt different. She felt lucky.
She rolled out of bed and noticed a small package on her desk. She opened it: it was a brand new dress, the same one she had been eyeing for weeks. Mom!" she called. Did you get me this dress?”
“It's from your grandmother.” her mother called back," Early birthday gift!”
Sarah shrugged. Her birthday wasn’t until August..
And it didn’t stop there. On the school bus, Carlos, the most popular boy in school, saved her a seat. Then Mrs. Nelson picked her—yes, her!-- to take care of the class rabbit over the weekend. But the best part of the day was art class. Mr. Rodriguez, her art teacher, walked around the room slowly. Sarah hadn't spent much time on her project. But it was still pretty, still unique. Mr. Rodriguez walked past Becky's art project and didn't even pause. Becky looked devastated. Her hair was still wet from that morning's rain. She had forgotten to bring an umbrella.
“Well, class!” Mr. Rodriguez said." I think our winner for this month is Sarah! Excellent work, Sarah--this shows a lot of progress!"
Sarah smiled proudly, “Guess you have some competition," she whispered to Becky.
Sarah was on top of the world. Today, she felt like a better-than-average fourth grader, possibly the best fourth grader who had ever existed. She wondered what was next.
Becky, she noticed had spent most of the day sulking(生闷气的)."Let someone else have a shot at being lucky for once," Sarah thought to herself. Then she noticed that Becky was crying. Small tears dropped down onto her t-shirts.
“What’s wrong?” Sarah asked.
“I just spent a lot of time on that project," Becky said between hiccupped sobs.
Sarah was beginning to feel awful: After all she hadn’t spent much time on her project at all.
Then she felt Kiara tap on her shoulder. “You know, Sarah,” Kiara started. She looked angry and hurt at the same time. “You haven’t been very nice today. You’ve been acting like…like you’re the best person in the world,” She shook her head. “This isn’t just like you at all.”
Now Sarah felt even worse. It was one thing to have the class pet dislike you, but another thing entirely to disappoint you best friend, “I’m sorry, Kiara,” she said. “It’s just been a weird day.”
She walked over to Becky and gave her a hug. “Don’t worry,” she whispered, “your luck will change soon enough.” Luck, Sarah was beginning to think, was overrated.

Hess Farm, at that time, was self-sufficient. They raised beef cattle for meat, chickens for eggs and hogs for pork and lard. Dairy cows were kept for milk and the cream from which Grandma made butter and cheese. That little yard they had became a garden.
The Depression, therefore, didn’t make a dramatic change in their lives. But it did bring an unending flow of men out of work, drifting from job to job, to the farm. The first man to show up on the kitchen porch was ragged-looking, but polite. He took off his hat and quietly explained that he hadn’t eaten for a while. Grandpa stood watching him a bit, then said, “There’s a pile of firewood stacked against the fence behind the barn (畜棚). I’ve been needing to get it moved to the other side of the fence. You have just about enough time to finish the job before lunch.” With that, he stuck out his rough hand to the stranger.
Grandma said a surprising thing happened. The drifter got a shine in his eyes and, behind his beard, he smiled. He hurried to the barn in a near trot (小跑). She set another place at the table and baked an apple pie. During lunch, the stranger didn’t say much, but his shoulders straightened when he left. “Nothing ruins a man like losing his self-respect”, Grandpa later told me.
Soon after, another man showed up asking for a meal. This one was dressed in a suit and carried a small, worn suitcase. Grandpa came out and then offered a handshake. “There’s a stack of firewood along the fence down behind the barn I’ve been meaning to get moved. It’d sure be a help to me. And we’d be pleased to have you stay for lunch.”
The fellow set his suitcase and neatly laid his coat and vest on top. Then he set off to work.
Grandma says she doesn’t remember how many strangers they shared a meal with during those Depression days—or how many times that pile of wood got moved.

After some difficulty, Daisy’s baby was born. I thought the poor thing was dead. I planned to put the loss behind us and make sure she never got pregnant again. Just then, I heard a little noise. I couldn’t believe that baby was breathing and looking at me! We called him Samson, and of course I became his mother as much as Daisy was.
When Samson was nine months old, I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a day to wean(使断奶) him, but otherwise he went wherever she did. I thought he would be lost without her. His donkey stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoyed playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.
I asked a worker to make a harness(马具)for my three little donkeys. When I brought it home, I taught them one by one how to pull a cart. Samson watched and freely followed Daisy. When he was three, I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.
That was 15 years ago. Now, the most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a little renowned. People come from all over to see him perform. The neighbors bring their grandchildren, and my sons bring their friends.
Samson shakes hands, unties my shoes, picks up a hat and more. And when I ask him if he has any bad habits, he tries to pick my pocket! He surprisingly learned these tricks himself. I just ask him to do them and he understands.

Answering the phone in the UK and USA
The standard way of answering a work phone in English is some part of "Good morning/ afternoon/ evening…Limited/ Corp…Department…Section…speaking. How can/ may I help you?" The only thing that differs in that is that "How can I help you?" is more common in Britain and "How may I help you?" is more standard in the US.
With a home phone or mobile, just answering the phone with "Hello?" is standard in English. If you can see who is calling and know them well, it has become more common to greet them by name straightaway instead, e. g. "Hi Steve. Thanks for calling me back". More informal greetings in that situation would be "Yo, Steve" or just "What's up?" in the US and "Alright Steve?" in the UK, with Americans perhaps more likely to use these kinds of more informal phrases. Americans are also more likely to use affectionate phrases like "Hi Honey" or "What's up, bro?", with the British phrase "Alright, mate" being both less common and not actually being so friendly.
Polite language at the beginning of calls in the UK and USA
"Thanks for…" and "Sorry for…" are not only equally likely in different forms of English, but seem to be very popular at the start of phone calls worldwide. The only small UK/USA difference is the rather cute British verb "ring" in "Thanks for ringing me back" and "Sorry to ring again so soon, but…". The more standard language "Thanks for calling me back" and "Sorry to call again so soon, but…" are used in both the UK and USA.

The people at the shelter guessed that the beagle was 7-8 years old, so he still had a lot of life left, if he could be brought back to a normal weight.
Unfortunately, dog pounds don't have the time or resources to work an abandoned animal back into good health. Plus, people don't like to adopt animals that are terribly overweight. Without someone's stepping in, this beagle would probably have been put down by giving a drug to end his suffering.
Thankfully the good people of Karma Rescue, a non-profit organization which provides life-saving aid for pets in trouble, came to his rescue. He was given the name Darwin. Karma rescues a number of dogs, and they were still surprised at what appeared to be neglect(忽略) of the dog for its entire life.
Darwin was about twice the weight that he should have been and even had a hard time walking. Having a beagle, we know how quickly a beagle can become overweight, which puts stress on their heart and causes other health issues.
Beagles will eat anything put in front of them, and will eat it all. They don't know when or how to stop eating. We have experienced this when our beagle has gotten into our trash, gotten food on the kitchen counter, and even eaten a bag of chocolate chips. Thankfully our beagle survived his hard times and we have learned to “beagle proof(防护) ” the house when we leave.
Darwin was in for a long journey back to health, but with the support of many people, he is down to a normal beagle weight and he is well on his way.

First of all, it’s a myth that no two snowflakes are the same. In 1988, a scientist found two identical snow crystals that had both formed in a snow storm in Wisconsin, USA. Since then scientists have come to learn that snowflakes can only form into 35 different shapes. Although scientists are also unsure why exactly the various shapes of snowflake form, they have identified eight major shapes, with each of these eight shapes having several different variations.
“Snow is white” is the second biggest myth. It’s actually colorless. Snow is made up of ice particles, and ice is translucent, which means that light does not pass through it easily, but rather it gets reflected. When light hits a snowflake, it gets reflected back from the snowflake’s many surfaces, often bouncing between these surfaces, and because of this that light is reflected back to our eyes as the color white. This is why, up close or magnified, a snowflake always looks clear, yet in reality appears as white.
Lastly, snow doesn’t always appear to us as the color white. Not counting the infamous yellow snow that everyone knows never to eat, you can also get naturally blue snow or even pink snow.
Deep snow can sometimes appear blue in color because the extra layers of snow create a filter for light, which causes more red light to be absorbed by the snow than blue light, meaning that it looks blue.
Likewise, snow can sometimes appear pink in mountainous regions or coastal Polar Regions due to it containing cryophilic fresh-water algae that have a red pigment in them.
As an interesting bonus fact, the fur of Polar Bears is actually made up of translucent fibers, trapping light between its many surfaces and making the Polar Bear look white, when in actuality if you were to examine a single piece of Polar Bear fur up close it would look clear – just like a snowflake.
It’s also a commonly known fact that, if shaved, a Polar Bear would be black in color. The reason a Polar Bear’s skin is black is because black is the color which locks in the most heat.
1. According to the passage, the underlined word “myth” means _________.A.tale | B.riddle |
C.mystery | D.misunderstanding |
A.Because snow is white. |
B.Because snow is made up of ice particles. |
C.Because ice is translucent, light does pass through it easily. |
