A FOREIGNER IN A FOREIGN LAND

“There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign.” — Robert Louis Stevenson

This is a great travel quote, and one that greatly reflects the issue I have with many travelers. Why do people, when visiting other cities and countries, think the destination should change itself     1     (cater) to them? It’s something I think many travelers do     2     even realizing it, and can be detrimental to allowing yourself to really experience and appreciate a destination as well as have true cultural immersion.

I can think of one example off the top of my head that     3     (occur) during a trip through Europe with a girl named Kate. One day in Vienna we went to a McDonald’s so Kate could get a tomato and mozzarella salad, only the cashier didn’t speak English. We had thought she had understood the order, but brought over a Caesar salad. Instead of just eating the salad and getting over it, Kate turned into Mr. Hyde, snapping at the girl     4     she had acted out of line.

“THIS ISN’T WHAT I WANTED,” said Kate, a little too loudly for my taste.

The cashier looked     5     (confuse ), most likely because she didn’t know     6     Kate was saying but could comprehend she was angry.

“Kate, just eat the Caesar salad and we can go somewhere else if you’re still hungry,” I begged,     7     (feel) the people around us staring.

“No!” she shouted.” I really want that salad. “Turning back to the girl, she said sternly, “I ordered a mozzarella salad! Do you understand me?!”

Then she turned to me and uttered the five words     8     make my blood boil: “Why doesn’t she speak English?”

Because we’re in Vienna! In reality, the real question should have been why didn’t we speak Austrian? This city     9     have seemed odd to us, but in reality we were the odd ones, an American and a Canadian from thousands of miles away who didn’t speak the language, didn’t have the same diet and knew     10     about classical music. I almost wished the cashier would turn to Kate and toss the salad in her face and scream, “Learn to speak Austrian!”

On Beijing’s Central Axis(中轴线) in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it is the imperial(帝国的) garden of the two dynasties. Many people may not know Jingshan is not a     2     (nature) mountain. So why did it appear on the Beijing Central Axis complex? And how did it come into being? It used to be part of the course of the Yongding River. Chinese ancestors     3     (use) the method of digging-a-lake-&-building-a-mountain. Since the Liao Dynasty, it     4     (pile) up for more than 700 years, then the scale of the mountain gradually formed. During the Yuan Dynasty, Jingshan was at the center, and an imperial palace was built to the south of it,     5     the Drum Tower was built to the north. Therefore, Jingshan not only became the benchmark of urban planning at that time,     6     formed a similar urban spatial pattern with Jingshan at the center. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, the imperial court greatly expanded Jingshan, while also building a pavilion on each of the five peaks. Among the five pavilions(亭阁), the Wanchun Pavilion located on    7     top of the hill and on the central axis, with a relative height of 45.7 meters, is the     8     (high) and best scenic look-out on Beijing’s north-south Central Axis.     9     (look) south from here, you can see roofs of the Forbidden City are golden yellow. Jingshan is a creation of wisdom of the ancestors. It makes use of the waste brick and soil, and     10     (clever) accumulates them into the brightest pearl in the center of Beijing in the Ming Dynasty. It not only makes up for the single layout of the Central Axis complex, but also makes Beijing even more magnificent!
