Knowing what not to do at checkout and properly preparing for it can turn a potentially heated situation into a quick thank you and goodbye. Below we compiled a list of things you should remember at hotel checkout.
1. Don’t be late to checkout
Hotels may add an outrageously high price for being just a half-hour late. If you know you won’t make the cutoff time, it never hurts to call ahead and try to negotiate a potential charge.
2. Don’t forget to double check the room and safe
Make sure you don’t leave anything behind. If you have an early flight or checkout time, pack up as much as you can the night before so that last-minute rush isn’t too hurried. Also, be sure to take out anything in the room safe.
3. Don’t freak out
Spitting venom (毒液) at the assistant manager standing behind the front desk probably won’t help when dealing with an unexpected item on the bill. Being empathetic about how difficult it can be to deal with annoyed customers will likely go much further.
4. Don’t pay with cash or debit card (借记卡)
Disputing your bill after paying with cash is a lot harder than working with a credit card company to get a charge back. If you pay with a debit card, you may not have the protection to challenge a charge.
5. Don’t have the hotel call you a cab
If you want to save a few dollars, plan ahead and check if a ride-sharing service is going to be cheaper than a cab to the airport.
1. What may the hotel do if you are late for the checkout?A.Negotiate a potential price. |
B.Call ahead and cancel the reservation. |
C.Charge extra money. |
D.Give the room to other customers. |
A.Spit at the assistant manager. | B.Argue with the front desk. |
C.Show understanding to the situation. | D.Go much further away from it. |
A.It helps the cab save dollars. |
B.It reduces the burden of the hotel. |
C.It is easy to get a charge back. |
D.It costs the customers less money. |

It is made up of “motor” and “hotel” and it is really a hotel for people who arrive by car (however, you don’t need a car to stay at one). You have to pay when you arrive for your room, which usually has a bath. Meals are not provided but there will certainly be a cafeteria. Americans eat a lot of salads and sandwiches. Along the main roads there are a lot of motels. Each tries to offer more than the others. Some provide television in every bedroom; others have swimming pools and so on. Motels are especially useful when you are in the country, far from a town or city. You will also find them in big national parks.
In these great national parks, you may meet guests you don't expect to see. An American friend told me a short story. In the middle of a moonless night, she heard strange noises outside her motel window in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Thinking it might be a thief, she jumped out of bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow. As she got close, she saw the thief. She was dreadfully frightened: it wasn’t a human thief-it was a big black bear. The bear was turning over some empty tins with its paws, looking for tasty bits of food. My friend decided to leave that particular thief alone!
There are also, of course, places called “rooming houses”, where they provide lodges(客房).You will see such signs as Tourists or Rooms Rent, and you could try one of these. A word of warning-looking for a room in New York during the tourist season is like looking for gold on the moon!
1. Motels provide all the following EXCEPT .A.bath | B.TV | C.meals | D.swimming pools |
A.moved slowly | B.rushed out | C.threw away | D.ran fast |
A.tourists can find gold there |

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
Amsterdam is the kind of city that you can't help but fall in love with. It's the kind of place where you dream about moving and buying an apartment that overlooks (俯瞰) a peaceful river. It's relaxing and you get a sense that the locals have an amazing quality of free life. We love simply walking around the canals and exploring the city's neighborhoods.
BERLIN, GERMANY
Berlin is said to be “poor but charming” and we think that's a pretty good description. Actually, Berlin is becoming more expensive as its popularity grows, but it's still the top spot for Germany's artistic scene. Berlin isn't particularly pretty but it's an energetic city with cool people and cooler graffiti-covered (涂鸦) neighborhoods.
LISBON, PORTUGAL
Lisbon is a hot destination and I doubt it will be quickly moving up in the ranks of Europe's most visited cities. Lisbon is a popular coastal city that's famous for its unique buildings and charming café culture. It's also very friendly on the wallet when compared to other Western European cities—food and lodging are both priced reasonably and attractions are about average.
FLORENCE, ITALY
Florence may be touristy but that’s no reason to ignore this birthplace of the Renaissance (文艺复兴). If you do your research, you can find plenty of excellent Italian restaurants and world-class ice cream. And, of course, the city is beautiful and home to top museums so it's a dream for art and history lovers.

That's where the C-mask, by Japanese company Donut Robotics, comes in. It's a smart, Internet-connected mouth covering that can make calls, raise the wearer’s voice, and most helpfully for travelers, translate conversations into eight different languages.
If need be, you simply place it over a standard face mask and connect it via Bluetooth to a smartphone. A special app will then allow you to record live conversations, turn them into text and translate them into English, Chinese, French, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Spanish or Vietnamese (currently only from Japanese)—making it easy to understand what people are saying. It won't actually speak the translated phrases for you, but it does have a built-in amplifier(扩音器)to help you make yourself heard.
“We worked hard for years to develop a robot and we have used what we've researched to create a product that responds to how COVID-19 has reshaped society,'' Donut's CEO recently told reporters. The firm has already raised more than 28 million yen via crowdfunding to develop the product, which will go on sale for 3 ,980 yen in Japan.
There are all manner of fashionable, eco-friendly masks you can now get your hands on— check out these in London, Singapore and Barcelona. But in creating an affordable, high-tech mask, Donut could well be on to something.

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao called the landmarkdebutflight a “complete success”. The descent capsule(返回舱) carrying Lt. Col. Yang Liwei touched down on the grasslands of the Gobi Desert, in central Inner Mongolia at 6:23 am Thursday (Beijing Time), the Beijing-based China's Aerospace Command and Control Center said. Minutes later, Yang grabbed the capsule hatch with his hand, pulled himself out, smiled and waved at recovery teams and reporters. “It is a splendid moment in the history of my motherland and also the greatest day of my life,” Yang, a former fighter pilot from Northeast China's Liaoning Province, said immediately after emerging. In an interview with CCTV, China's state television, Yang said he was “feeling excellent”. Shenzhou 5 landed at dawn, 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) from its designed landing target, the officials said. “The spaceship operated well,” the astronaut Yang Liwei said in his first publicized comments. “I feel very good and I am proud of my motherland.” After a physical exam on spot, Yang's condition was found as "good." Li Jinai, the commander of China's manned space program, called Yang a “space hero” and a “national hero”. Following Yang's touchdown, China's premier Wen Jiabao immediately spoke to Yang from Beijing's command and control centre and offered his congratulations.
Within hours, Chinese space officials announced that the country's space dreams will continue with a "Shenzhou 6" mission, most possibly within a year. They said China also had worked out plans to conduct space walking by its astronauts, and eventually build up a space station. However, Chinese scientists ruled out building a space shuttle, like the United States.
Yang's flight came four decades after the former Soviet Union and the United States pioneered manned spaceflight. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth in April 1961. One month later, the United States launched Alan B. Shepard Jr.

At first, she started experiencing redness in her knees. I took her into the doctor’s office and I was told it was growing pains. After another couple of weeks it got worse. One day she was not able to walk at all. I took her back into the doctor’s office and luckily there was a different doctor on duty and she recognized the symptoms (症状). She told me to see a specialist at the hospital.
We got to the hospital. Everything seemed to be blurry (模糊的) to me that day. I also had a nine-month-old baby girl and due to the nervousness I lost my milk. I would lie awake at night wondering if my little girl would end up in a wheelchair. We knew we would have to use strong drugs to keep her walking.
Like anyone, I feared what the strong drugs could do to my little girl. I spoke with lots of specialists. We decided it was the best treatment. It worked. Our little girl is symptom-free.
I still don’t sleep well though. A mother’s worry can take over your whole life. I’ve had to become a nurse overnight. Learning about different drugs, how to give needles (注射). On top of that, there are so many comments from friends. Some say that I should go the “natural way”. What does that even mean? Do you honestly think I would choose this for my child if it weren’t the best choice for her?
I can only hope my words can touch and help someone else going through this same thing right now. Know that you are not alone and there are others that feel your pain. Stay strong and try not to let this disease run your life.

"What makes a violin beautiful?"
I first asked this question as a three-year-old child and now again as a teenager. When I listened to a violin for the first time, I was so astonished by its beauty that I imagined a fairy living in the wooden frame. But fairies faded when I grew older. I wanted a reasonable answer to the question.
I referred to Professor Ruan, my violin teacher, who introduced the violin to me 14 years ago. This 85-year-old man rhapsodized about the legend of Antonio Stradivari, "His violins are the most beautiful works human has ever crafted. " "Make a violin with your own hands, "Professor Ruan suggested, "when you play it, you'll know."
However, when Professor Ruan introduced to me a violin workshop, what I saw was far from my expectation. In front of me was a fat worker, shirtless and sunburned, soon to become my master. What shocked me most was that the "master" knew nearly nothing about music. His rough hands had been tending crops, not instruments, for most of his life.
Two months later, standing outside the workshop, I was disappointed. Yes, I just finished or copied a Stradivarius violin. But I didn't find beauty in it. Then I remembered Professor Ruan's words, "When you play it, you'll know." So I closed my eyes, and focused on where my fingers and strings touched, music flowed suddenly so beautifully that for a moment I doubted my own ears. Slowly I opened my eyes, and with surprise found the fairy of my childhood fantasy dancing to my music—the two-year-old daughter of the master.
Professor Ruan was right. I didn't find beauty until I played music with the violin, because beauty isn't in the instrument itself. It's just here, deep down, in ourselves.
1. After consulting Professor Ruan, what did the writer think made a violin beautiful?A.The person who makes the violin. | B.The person who plays the violin. |
