Severe heat waves have killed more than 100 people in India this summer and are predicted to worsen in coming years, creating a possible crisis as large parts of the country potentially become too hot to be inhabitable (适宜居住的).

Heat waves in India usually take place between March and July and abate (减弱) once the rains arrive. But in recent years these hot waves have become more severe, more frequent and longer.

India is among the countries expected to be worst affected by severe heat, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) say that even if the world succeeds in limiting the rise in average global temperatures, parts of India will become extremely hot.

Last year, there were over 480 official heat waves across India. During that period, more than 5,000 people died. This June, temperatures of 48 degrees Celsius hit Delhi. Churu nearly broke the country's heat record with a high of 50.6 degree Celsius. Bihar closed all schools, colleges and coaching centers for five days after severe heat killed more than 100 people. The closures were accompanied by warnings to stay indoors during the hottest time of the day.

India is trying to develop a heat action plan. The city of Ahmedabad, in Gujarat introduced the country's first action plan in 2013, and its text messages, extra drinking stations and advice to keep out of the sun are credited with saving more than 2,000 lives.

At the same time, India is seeking long term solution The country has planned to cut its carbon emissions (排放) by 33% to 35% in 2030.

1. What's the possible crisis for India?
A.It will rain less and less.
B.Drinking water will run out.
C.Some places will be too hot to be livable.
D.More people will be killed in coming years.
2. What dos paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The heat record was broken.B.People are warned to stay indoors.
C.More heat waves hit India this year.D.The heat waves brought great loss.
3. Which of the following are the measures India has taken to fight severe heat?
①Avoiding carbon emissions.
②Building more drinking stations.
③Sending messages about severe heat.
④Giving advice to stay away from severe heat.
A.①②③B.②③④C.①②④D.①③④
4. What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Heat Waves Hit IndiaB.India Suffered a Lot
C.Global Warming Affected IndiaD.A Plan to Fight Severe Heat

【推荐1】NEW YORK (Reuters) — Global warming has cut about $5 billion worth of value from the world’s most commonly grown grains over 20 years, according to a new study.

Warming temperatures from 1981 to 2002 cut the combined production of wheat, corn and other crops by 40 million tons per year. “Contrary to what most people think, this study shows that warming over the past two decades has already affected global food supply. The effect is not a faraway thing,” said Christopher Field, a co-author on the study, the first to estimate how much global food production has already been affected by climate change.

Not every scientist agrees that agriculture is suffering from warmer temperatures. A UN report said warming is expected to turn the planet a bit greener by encouraging plant growth, but crops and forests may wilt beyond mid-century if temperatures keep rising.

Average global production for several of the crops suffered from warmer temperatures, with production dropping by about 3-5% for every 1°F increase, the study said. Average global temperatures increased by about 0.7°F during the study period, with even larger changes in several regions.

“If the past is an indication, agriculture will also suffer going forward,” Field said. “We expect future warming to continue to be a drag on grain production, like driving with the parking brake engaged.” The study said the cereal crops hit by global warming account for 55% of non-meat categories consumed by humans and they also contribute more than 70% of the world’s animal feed.

“Farmers can adapt to warmer temperatures by changing crop planting times, the varieties they grow, or the locations used for each crop,” Field said. “In the past farmers have been very adaptable to environmental challenges, but adaptation to warming can take years.”

1. It is commonly thought that global warming ______.
A.will have a bad effect on human beings’ present life
B.is something that will just affect the future
C.is becoming more and more serious
D.will soon lead to great decrease in food supply
2. The underlined word “wilt” in the third paragraph probably means “______”.
A.increaseB.grow taller
C.stay the sameD.grow badly
3. According to Field, we can learn that ________.
A.agriculture will not suffer a lot from global warming
B.grain production will increase despite global warming
C.grain production will be affected by global warming
D.farmers can increase crop production by changing crop planting times
4. This passage mainly tells us that __________.
A.the future food supply will change with global warming
B.global warming reduces global food production
C.traditional agriculture will disappear due to global warming
D.global warming prevents the growth of plants and grains

by Claire Vaye Watkins ($ 5.99)

With the flight of its characters through a landscape destroyed by climate crisis, this novel does not indicate much hopefulness for the future. 【推荐3】You may laugh it off if someone told you that extreme weather disasters were actually a child’s tricks. But El Nino, meaning “little boy” in Spanish, could be about to cause trouble

A recent statement from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned ofa strong El Nino event that may be similar to the strongest in modern times. Scientists believe that evidence shows a more than 90 percent chance that it is coming — and it’s going to be big. “If this lives up to its potential, this thing can bring a lot of floods, mudslides(泥石流), and trouble,” said Bill Patzert, a NASA scientist.

El Nino is a climate event occurring in the Pacific Ocean. The wind usually blows strongly from east to west due to the rotation(旋转)of the Earth. This causes water to pile up in the Western Pacific and pulls up colder water from the boom in the eastern part. However, in El Nino years, the winds pushing the water get weaker and cause the warmer water to shift back toward the east. This warms the ocean as it travels before finally reaching the shores of North and South America. In an El Nino event, the waters of the eastern Pacific can be up to 4 degrees Celsius warmer than usual.

Most El Ninos last from 9 to 12 months and their effects are felt around December. They don’t happen every year though, usually between every two to seven years.

Last seen in 1997-98, El Nino caused severe droughts in Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia, as well as deadly floods in Peru and Ecuador. The world also heats up during an ElNino-1998 became the warmest year on record at the time. If the current trend continues, 2015 is almost certainly to become the hottest year yet again.

A strong El Nino also affects hurricane seasons around the planet. The warmer the Eastern Pacific is, the more hurricanes it gets. The Western Pacific, on the other hand, tends to see more and stronger typhoons.

The weather isn’t the only thing that’s affected. Warmer surface waters in the Eastern Pacific make the cold-water fish swim away and damage the fishing industry in much of Latin America.

1. What is the text mainly about?
A.Extreme weather disasters ever.
B.El Nino and its harmful effects.
C.The hottest years ever in history.
D.The strongest El Nino in history.
2. Which of the following statements is TRUE about El Nino?
A.It results from hurricanes or typhoons in the oceans.
B.It happens every two years and last about half a year.
C.It is a weather phenomenon occurring in the Atlantic.
D.It can cause extreme weather, such as floods and droughts.
3. During an EI Nino year, ________.
A.the fishing industry in much of Latin America is likely to suffer
B.the wind blows so strongly that it causes the water to pile up
C.the more typhoons it experiences, the warmer the Western Pacific is
D.the surface water in the Eastern Pacific usually gets colder than ever
4. El Nino in fact results from ________.
A.a little Spanish child’s trickB.the natural rotating of the Earth
C.an American expert’s predictionD.the weaker winds in the Pacific
