When Edith heard there was a competition to invent a brand-new machine, she longed to enter. Her idol (偶像), the famous inventor Mathew, was going to be the judge! Edith planned and worked on her invention every day after school. Finally, a huge light-up music box was finished—just in time for the competition. She was sure it would win first prize. Everyone would certainly be amazed when the lights shone and the music began to play.

However, when Edith slowly turned the handle (手柄), nothing happened. The machine needed more power.

Edith turned the handle faster, but no matter how quickly she went, she couldn’t get more than a flash from the lights. There was no way this would win and she had run out of time to fix it.

On the competition night, Edith went to the town hall with a heavy heart. She set up her music machine, feeling like a failure.

Mathew burst through the doors on his bike, whose pedals (脚踏板) gave off light. Everyone cheered excitedly. He got off the bike and walked around the rooms to see the inventions on show. Edith was nervous as he came over. “Can you tell me about your machine?” he asked. “It is a music machine that lights up.” Edith said in a low voice. Mathew clapped happily. “Amazing! Show me how it works.”

Edith turned the handle faster than she’d ever managed before. Terrible slow music started and the lights flashed on and off. Someone nearby laughed. Edith’s cheeks turned red. “Don’t worry.” Mathew smiled, “All my inventions went wrong when I was younger. You mustn’t give up.” Hiding behind the machine, Edith couldn’t wait for the competition to end.

The judging had almost finished when suddenly the lights of the hall went out. No one could get the lights to work and the competition couldn’t carry on. Edith thought for a moment. If only she were stronger, she could have turned the handle of her machine faster and lit up the room. In the dark, Edith could just see Mathew climbing onto his bike, with his pedals glimmering (发出微光).

When Mom said we had to give away Sam, I didn’t say a word. I just picked up Sam and walked out to the shed (棚) that used to be Dad’s workshop. What Mom said to me wasn’t a surprise. I saw it would come.

My name is Nathan. Sam was my cat. Not long before Dad died, he found Sam behind his store. No one wanted a little cat, so Dad brought him home. Sam was black, with wise eyes and big ears. But what most people noticed was his big white feet.

“Meow?” Sam knew I was upset. I wondered if I could explain to Sam about Anna. She’s my younger stepsister (继妹), and if it weren’t for her, I could keep Sam. But I didn’t explain, and Sam couldn’t understand his situation. He liked to run up and down in the shed’s dusty sunlight.

No one used the shed now except our elder neighbors, Mr. Sims and Mr. Irvin. They made wind chimes (风铃) to sell at the market. Dad used to help them. I grew up loving the sounds that filled our shed. Mom said people loved those chimes because their music was mixed with laughter.

I wondered how things were going to change now that I had a stepsister. Last week we had to take Anna to the hospital quickly. She couldn’t breathe. Mom thought it was because Sam slept in her room. Anna was allergic (过敏的) to cats. Mom told me that Sam had to be sent away. She asked me who was more important, Sam or Anna. I couldn’t answer.

“Isn’t there anything else we can do?” I asked. I looked at Sam. Sam was playing with things left over from the wind chimes. When he hit metal against metal, it rang loudly. Sam was happy. But I wasn’t.

I was watching some little kids play soccer. These kids were only five or six years old. The teams were pretty evenly (平均地) matched. I will just call them Team One and Team Two. Nobody scored in the first period. They fell over their own feet, they fell over the ball, they kicked at the ball and missed it, but they didn’t seem to care. They were having fun.

In the second quarter, the Team One coach pulled out what must have been his first team and put in the uniforms, except for his best player who now guarded the goal. The game took a dramatic turn.

Team Two gathered around the little guy who was now the Team One goalkeeper. He was an outstanding athlete, but he was no match for three or four who were also very good. Team Two began to score. The little guy gave it everything he had, recklessly (不顾一切地) throwing his body in front of incoming balls, trying bravely to stop them. Team Two scored two goals quickly. With all the strength, he covered the boy who now had the ball, but that boy kicked it to another boy twenty feet away, and by the time he re-positioned himself, it was too late—Team Two scored a third goal.

After the third goal, the little kid changed. He could see it was no use. The little boy needed help so badly, and there was no help to be had. He got the ball from the net and handed it to the coach and then he cried. He just stood there while huge tears rolled down both cheeks. He went to his knees and put his fists to his eyes—and he cried, helpless and broken-hearted.

Everybody pushed him away. With a big black birthmark (胎记) on his face, Thomas never had any friends. He was lonely, as if the world could never see the light. He used to love acting dramas in front of his mother, but now, he thinks he does not have the right to do so with such appearance.

This terrible life has begun since Thomas went to school. However, everything changed since that evening.

Thomas was sitting on the chair, staring out of the window while trying to forget the names that his classmates had called him earlier at school. The tree outside was surrounded by dried, lifeless leaves, with branches lowering themselves to the ground. It was so quiet that only the sound of the wind blowing the leaves away could be heard. A knock on the door broke the silence. “Thomas, here’s a letter for you.” Mom said. Just as Thomas reached out for the letter, Mom immediately pulled it away and said, “Let me read it for you.”

Dear Thomas,

How are you? I know that you feel sad because of your birthmark, but you cannot change that. Therefore, instead of feeling bad for your appearance, you should stand up for yourself. Go to do astonishing things that would change everybody y’s thoughts about you. Prove yourself. I believe in you.

Regards,

Aunt Janice

Thomas felt a wave of warmness in his heart. That night, he carried a smile on his face to his dreams. After that day, Thomas received more letters from relatives, encouraging him to be brave to do what he wanted. Mom would read out every single letter, each time with a lovely expression. Thomas realized that there were so many people caring and loving him. He heard a voice telling him that he should prove himself to the world.

With the encouragements, Thomas joined the drama class in his school. Unexpectedly, the whole school cheered for him and praised his acting skills. The teachers later signed him up to represent the school for an acting competition. Despite of his appearance, he got the first prize. His confidence grew.
