I can still remember the afternoon when we climbed the mountain as if it were yesterday.

It was a sunny day. Eager to spend some time outside, I went up the mountain with my uncle. The mountain was hard       1    (climb) and had tough rocks and streams on it. In the end,     2     (exhaust) and hot, I couldn’t go any further. So we went back down the mountain in the end.

On the way back down, my uncle asked me a question,     3     left me speechless for a second: “What’s your dream, young lady?”

“I have no idea,” I answered     4    thinking about it for a while. Then he smiled and told me about his story. He didn’t perform well at school when he was a student. Although nobody thought he could succeed, he knew clearly       5    his dream was-----to be a businessman. “I knew I wasn’t gifted when it came to studying, so I tried to buy snacks from a market and sell them after class,” he told me. After he left school, he started selling different items to find out which one was most attractive to customers. Of course, he often had no money in his pocket, but     6     tough life was, he never gave up.

“There is no doubt that a person who puts in a great deal of effort to reach his or her goal will have good luck at some point. The meaning of life is to chase your dream,” he said gently.

That night I     7     hardly fall asleep. I lay in bed tossing and turning, asking myself, “What’s my motivation?”

I once wanted to be a top student, but the hard work needed meant       8     (put) everything into following my passion. If I find myself lacking willpower, what should I do? Leaving home early the next morning, I climbed the mountain again by       9    . It made me think: If we don’t experience the climb, how can we get to see the scenery on the top of the mountain? In the end, I reached the top and       10     (fascinate) by the warm breeze and sunshine. Nothing could be more pleasant than that.

Do you have the time? This is a very commonly     1    (ask) question, whether in American,British,    2     Australian English. If I     3    (be) the editor of the Grand Encyclopedia of Excuses,I think that “I don't have the time” would win the prize for being the most commonly used excuse, year after year.

No one     4    (give) you the time. It's you that make the time, as well as most of the related decisions about what is important. The key is what criteria(标准)you rely     5    .If you don't decide on the use of your time, the decision will be taken away from you.Another     6     (say) in English is “Take your time”, which is similar to the Chinese “慢慢来”.I see a     7     (deep) meaning of this simple phrase,   which is that if you don't take your time, someone else will do so for you.

If you think about your friends,     8    (colleague) and business partners, it's not difficult to divide them into two kinds:those rare ones who always make time for you when you need them, and those common folks who     9    (most) don't.When you look back on your life, you'll be more appreciative of those occasions     10     you made the time than those when you seized the advantage.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了主人公斯特勒通过为别人免费理发来传递她的善行义举。

Last summer, Katie Steller was on her way to work. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man, in his 60s,     1     (apparent)looking out of luck, was sitting alone. She rolled down her window.“Hey!”she shouted.“I’m driving around to give free haircuts, Do you want one right now?”The man, missing a few teeth, paused and laughed.“Actually,”he said,“at this time tomorrow, I    2    (attend)a funeral(葬礼)of my friend. I was really hoping to get my hair cut.”

Then, Steller unloaded a red chair from the car. The man, named Edward, took a seat. As his curly graying hair was being cut by Steller, he told her about growing up in Mississippi, about moving to Minnesota, and no matter    3    busy he was, he still talked to his mom over the phone every day. He said his family consisted    4    four people and that he had been living in Minnesota for about ten years. The    5    (interact)between them was very relaxing and constructive.

Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. One changed hers: As a teen, she suffered from ulcerative colitis(溃疡性结肠炎)that was so serious, her hair thinned severely. Seeing this, her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut.

“To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just a sick person helped me feel cared about and less alone,”she says.

After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own hair salon so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology school(美容学校)in 2016, she realized her dream. Two years later, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project,    6    (reach)out to people on the streets.

Steller said,“As you know, I can’t have their problems    7    (fix), but maybe I can help    8    (they)feel less alone for a moment.”Steller listens to people’s stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet.

An offshoot(衍生物)of the Red Chair Project is the Steller Kindness Project, in which people who commit acts of kindness are invited for a free makeover(美容)at Steller’s salon, In exchange, they tell their stories, which Steller shares on her website. It is her hope that by reading about kind acts, others will be inspired to do their own.

9    is evident that it has been working well.“You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give to them. Kindness and generosity can contribute to a    10    (harmony)society,”says Steller.
