Pumpkins are not only the most important symbol of Halloween; they are the star vegetable when it comes to the fall season in terms of decoration (装饰) and cooking uses. Often, we overlook how many different ways it can be used.
The pumpkin has a long list of nutrients, including vitamins A, C, E, fiber, potassium, manganese, copper and so on. It is also low in salt, cholesterol and saturated (饱和的) fats. In its raw state, the pumpkin is a great source of nutrition.
When buying your pumpkins, always get them from your local farmers to support their business and the environment, plus you will be guaranteed (保证) that they are freshly grown. If you are feeling interested, you can grow your own pumpkins!
When carving your jack-o'-lanterns, don't throw away the seeds! They make a tasty baked treat that is healthy for you.
When your jack-o'-lanterns has lived its last day out in the doorway, refuse the usual practice of throwing it away at once. Instead, create a compost heap (堆肥堆) and let nature do all the work. Be sure to remove the candle and all of the wax inside, and cut the pumpkin into pieces. Those leftover nutrients will help your soil.
Make a pie—a great way to bring family and friends together. If you are feeling even more adventurous, try cooking something new with the pumpkins and see what wonderful delicious dishes you can produce in your very own kitchen. And don't think of the pumpkin just around holidays—it's great all year round. Don't let any part of the pumpkin go to waste this year. Turn them from orange to green this Halloween!

Niu Yun, who hails from Kunming, Yunnan Province, opened her first eatery (小餐馆) in 2014 after studying in London.
“At that time there weren’t many choices for Yunnan food, and I think the province has so much tasty food and such a diverse food culture that I could bring to Shanghai,” she said. “After meeting a few good friends who also love Yunnan cuisine, we decided to open a simple Yunnan eatery focusing on street food to start with, introducing Yunnan rice noodles and street snacks I used to buy every day after school.”
Opening this new restaurant after operating Slurp for a few years is a natural step for Niu Yun and her partners. The menu of Slurp&Sip pays homage (敬意) to Niu’s origins with a major focus on Dai flavors.
“My mum is Dai, and I remember every time she brought me back to her hometown the food really made a strong impression. From how they cook and the ingredients they use, all are very special to me. Dai food is all about fresh and mixed ingredients, as well as natural and original ways of cooking,” she said.
“I feel diners shouldn’t only know about crossing the bridge rice noodles and steampot chicken when we talk about Yunnan food. We have such a diverse culture with so many different minorities, so I decided to start with the one I’m the most connected with,” she added.
Dai cuisine is characterized by a combination of fresh herbs, chilis and acidic elements. It incorporates lots of great produce from the province’s southernmost prefecture.
Dai food is also full of barbecue items often seen in night markets, such as roasted lemongrass stuffed fish, roasted chicken and roasted pork with Dai spices, all of which grace Slurp&Sip’s menu.

Since last week, this cycle has been on repeat near a port in eastern Australia, part of a government effort to protect the country’s multimillion dollar honey industry. Millions of bees have been destroyed to help contain the spread of the deadly mite, which reappeared in the country last week near the Port of Newcastle. If the mite became established in Australia, it could cost the nation’s honey industry more than $70 million a year, in addition to its effect on the crops that rely on bee pollination.
The mites, which are reddish-brown and about the size of a sesame seed, can spread from bee to bee and through beekeeping equipment. If left untreated, the mites could kill an entire colony of honey bees, the government has said.
It’s not easy to contain the mite. One of the biggest challenges in the current containment effort is figuring out the location of infected hives and mapping their spread in a vast region, according to Danny Le Feuvre, the acting head of the Australian Honey Bee Industrial Council. It’s necessary to contain the Port of Newcastle and the hives within a 31-mile radius(半径)of it. The port is a major shipping destination and one of the world’s busiest export centres for coal.
So far at least 600 hives have been destroyed in the area. “The beekeepers are very nervous at the moment,” Mr. Feuvre said. He said he was confident the country would be able to contain the spread, given its history of previous eradication efforts of honey bee mites and strict controls at all airports stopping passengers from bringing live plants, soil, fruits and vegetables into Australia.
1. Why do people pour gas into beehives?A.To stop the spread of a deadly mite. |

Environmentalists had requested the government in 1991 and again in 2008 to protect the trees. A nonnative fungus (真菌) has been killing whitebark pines for a century. More recently, the trees have proved vulnerable (易受伤的) to tiny insects that have killed large areas of forest.
The whitebark pines have almost disappeared in some areas, including the eastern edge of Yellowstone National Park, where they are a source of food for threatened grizzly bears (灰熊). This makes the government’s declaration of the Yellowstone area’s grizzly bears as a restored species a lie.
After being blamed for not taking steps to protect the trees, wildlife officials in 2011 admitted that whitebark pines needed protection, but they didn’t act rapidly, saying other species faced more immediate threats.
A lawyer for the Natural Resources Defense Council, which made the formal request for protection in 2008, expressed his disappointment that it took so long but said the proposal was still worth celebrating.
The government’s proposal described the threats to the trees as immediate and said the whitebark pines were one of many plants expected to be harmed as climate change moves faster than they can adapt. “Whitebark pines survive at high elevations already, so there is little remaining habitat in many areas for the species to move to higher elevations in response to warmer temperatures,” Fish and Wildlife Service officials wrote.
Government officials are working with researchers and private groups on plans to gather seed from trees, grow them in greenhouses and then plant them back on the landscape, according to Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Amy Nicholas. A proposal of that nationwide restoration is expected by the end of this year. “We do have options to restore this species,” Nicholas said.

The limited lifespan of many tech gadgets(设备)has caused the issue of e-waste to increase over the years. “People tend not to realize that all these seemingly insignificant things have a lot of value, especially in large amounts, ”Pascal Leroy, director general of the WEEE Forum, said in a statement
How to solve the problems of e-waste is much more than just cleaning out space in your junk drawers. Actually, large amounts of e-waste are shipped to developing countries that lack the power to refuse and safely recycle these imports. The WHO warned that children, with their smaller hands, are often used to deal with mountains of e-waste in developing nations in search of valuable elements such as copper, silver, palladium and so on. The WHO said the health of more than 18 million children are being affected negatively as they are employed in this informal e-waste processing industry.
Personally, what can you do to reduce the e-waste burden? Find an e-waste disposal(处理) service. The impact of recycling e-waste can be staggering. For every 1 million cellphones that are recycled, 35, 000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered. Meanwhile, environmental advocates say the most important step to deal with the mounting e-waste problem is simply to try to use your electronics for as long as possible

In a study, researchers gave three groups of six-year-old children a difficult task to complete on a computer. In Group One, the children were told-to repeat asking themselves, “Am I working hard?” In Group Two, the children were told to ask themselves the same question in the third person - as in “Is Sam working hard?” And in Group Three, the children were told to imagine themselves as Batman and ask themselves, “Is Batman working hard?” Researchers found that the children in Group Three did the best.
How can you make use of the Batman Effect? Imagine yourself as someone who is the best for the task you are doing. If you’re facing a personal difficulty, imagine yourself as a wise family member. 【推荐3】Can a computer think? That depends on what you mean by “think”. If solving a mathematical problem is “thinking”, then a computer can “think” and do so much faster than a man. Most mathematical problems can be solved quite mechanically by repeating certain straightforward processes over and over again. Even the simple computers of today can be geared for that.
It is frequently said that computers solve problems only because they are “programmed” to do so. They can only do what men have them do. One must remember that human beings also can only do what they are “programmed” to do. Our genes “program” us the instant the fertilized ovum is formed, and our potentialities are limited by that “program”.
Our “program” is so much more enormously complex, though, that we might like to define “thinking” in terms of the creativity that goes into writing a great play or composing a great symphony, into developing a brilliant scientific theory or a profound moral judgment. In that sense, computers certainly can’t think and neither can most humans.
Surely, though, if a computer can be made complex enough, it can be as creative as humans. If it could be made as complete as a human brain, it could be the equivalent of a human brain and do whatever a human brain can do.
But how long will it take to build a computer complex enough to duplicate the human brain? Perhaps not as long as someone thinks. Long before we approach a computer as complex as our brain, we will perhaps build a computer that is at least complex enough to design another computer more complex than itself. This more complex computer could design one still more complex and so on and so on and so on.
In other words, once we pass a certain critical point, the computers take over and there is a “complexity explosion”. In a very short time thereafter, computers may exist that not only duplicate the human brain but far surpass it.

The place looked pretty to Katrina Arthur. So she and her husband booked a weekend holiday last year. However, things started to go wrong as soon as they walked into the room.
“Smelt terrible,” Arthur said, “The air conditioning didn’t work, either. We started checking the sheets and the bed. They were really dirty.” She went to the desk to complain, but no one was there. Arthur found no employees in the hotel at all. So she cleaned the room herself. When they woke the next day, they still found no one else in the hotel. So they put the room key in a drop box and got away.
Later she left a statement online. “I was honest; I wanted people to know.” she said.
The next month, Andrew Szakaly, owner of Abbey, sent a letter to Arthur, saying her statement had caused injury to the hotel, and Szakaly would sue(起诉) her unless she took it down.
