However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is torture. My friends never seem to understand why I’m so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.
There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.
The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like being laid off and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.
After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other options have become only too clear. "This job pays well, but it’s hell on the body," said one co-worker. "Study hard and keep reading." she added. When I’m back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale now ring true.
My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.

One of the greatest soft skills an animator can have will be the ability to work together in a team.
The team of animators usually use computer software and work with artists to create the magic and make the characters “come to life.” A successful production accurately captures (捕捉) the characters’ wide range of expressions, among other aspects.
Animation work usually differs from pre-production to production stages. Some animators are involved in developing and visualizing (可视化)the storyline. Some animators are involved in keeping the characters’ personalities and core (核心的) positions constant throughout the production.
Do animators go to a school to learn animation first? Ideally, yes. It is highly recommended that animator-lovers get a college degree first. If you are interested in becoming an animator, do not stop there. Bravely approach production houses for internship (实习) opportunities.
A.Animation is never a solo effort. |
B.These expressions are not created overnight. |
C.The team will also need to be good communicators. |
D.It takes weeks to create a ten-second animation production. |
E.Animators at the production stage bring the characters to life. |
F.An animator with a suitable qualification and experiences is always in demand. |
G.Animators are the most sensitive creators when it comes to life and human nature. |

The Canadian began her career as a referee in 1978, at the age of 14. She worked her way up, and in 1994, became the first female international FIFA referee. Sonia was the first woman to referee a top men’s professional game, in EL Salvador in 1996. A year later, she became the first female to referee a men’s first division game (甲级队) in Brazil. She has refereed at thousands of games at all levels, including over 100 international games, three World Cups, and two Olympic Games.
Her goal has always been to encourage more young women to become involved in the game. She accepts that it can be difficult, but she is sure that progress is possible. “I became a top referee and I’m from Canada, which is not a huge footballing nation,” she said. “So if I can do it, anyone can. And I wouldn’t change anything about my life because my career has given me excellent opportunities.”
In 1994, there were only four female referees on FIFA’s list. In 2008, this figure had risen to552--over 18 percent of the 3,000 listed FIFA referees and assistants. She is now Head of FIFA Women’s refereeing and continues to promote the role of women in soccer. However, there is still a long way to go in the battle for equality in the game.
It is still very unusual to see a female referee at the top international tournaments. Some people say this is because the women referees aren’t fit enough to work at the highest level. But for Sonia, this is simply an excuse to hide the widespread opposition to women doing what is considered a “man’s job”. “It’s a social thing,” she says. “In some countries women in positions of authority are just not accepted.” Even Sonia admits, “Football is still a man’s world.” However, things are changing, thanks to pioneering women like Sonia.

Yellow-Purple lives with a large group of African penguins at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. African penguins are an endangered species. They are beautiful, black and white birds that are about two feet tall when fully grown, and they are very popular with the Aquarium’s visitors.
The staff at the Aquarium made a little support boot for Yellow-Purple from plastic. This supported her left ankle and made it much easier for her to do all the things that penguins like to do. Yellow-Purple was getting along fine with her boot, but then Dr. Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, heard about 3 D printing technology. She decided to use it to help better the boot.
Luckily, Mystic Aquarium’s Vice President of Education &Conservation, Kelly Marls, knew that Mystic Middle School had recently acquired a 3D Systems printer. Kelly reached out to the school and arranged a meeting. Sue Prince, Library Media Specialist at Mystic Middle School, and seven middle school students visited Yellow-Purple to learn what was needed, and then contacted the supplier of their 3 D printer, ACT Group.
With ACT Group’s help, the students learned how to scan Yellow-Purple’s existing foot cast, then use that data to create a more efficient boot with sculpting software. The final boot design was printed on a 3D printer using multiple materials, allowing the boot to be flexible enough for comfortable movement, yet hard enough to support the injured tendon.
The students were thrilled when they saw Yellow-Purple walking almost back to normal. It was a great way to put science into practice. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher shared Yellow-Purple’s story on Facebook, inspiring more than 1.5 million combined views.

When the studio didn’t want me for the film—it wanted somebody as well-known as Paul—he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other—but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the belief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back—he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn’t talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.
1. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to author at first?A.Paul Newman wanted it. | B.The studio powers didn’t like his agent. |
C.He wasn’t famous enough. | D.The director recommended someone else. |
A.They were of the same age. | B.They worked in the same theater. |

From growing vegetables in little pots on your balcony to tending to a small plot of land, called allotments, there are many ways to produce home-grown food. Allotments are a typically British idea, and they give people with a small or no garden, a space to plant and care for fruit and vegetables. It can be backbreaking work digging, weeding and watering the soil, but the result is fresh and organically grown produce.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic lockdown means demand for allotments has seen a renaissance (复兴). Miriam from the University of Sheffield told the BBC that people with allotments have been spending a lot of their time on their plots, growing plenty of fresh fruit and veg — which, at times, have been challenging to source in supermarkets. She says “Coronavirus has... highlighted to people the fragility (脆弱) within our globalized food system. In a time of crisis, interest in self-sufficiency rises.”
But for those with limited space, a solution to grow your own veg lies closer to home-using pots. Once you can lay your hands on some compost (堆肥), you can plant seeds. Sheila Brand lives in a third-floor flat. She has managed to grow tomatoes and aubergines and is already harvesting raspberries. She said excitedly: “Oh it’s got a new leaf!”
As well as the benefits of saving money and enjoying tasty food, gardener Mark says “growing your own from a balcony or window ledge not only improves your wellbeing and immediate environment, you can actually grow a lot of veg.” So, maybe it’s time for us all to get planting and develop our green fingers!
1. What is the characteristic of allotments?A.Mass-produced. | B.Organically grown. |
C.Typically American. | D.Only growing vegetables. |
A.The outbreak of coronavirus. | B.The challenge from supermarkets. |
C.Globalized food system. | D.The rise of self-confidence. |

A.It is very economical to buy food from the supermarket. |
B.There are many advantages of growing your own food. |
C.Planting can make our green fingers green and tender. |
D.If you want to have delicious food, you must grow on your own. |
