The Appalachian Writer’s Conference, October 28, Berea, KY. The conference is a literary workshop that offers beginning writers a chance to sharpen existing skills and learn new techniques from award-winning, seasoned novelists, non-fiction writers, memoirists, and poets. The guests will stay at Historic Boone Tavern Hotel and have a chance to meet Kentucky Artisans.

Kansas Book Festival, November 10—12, Topeka, KS. This event, designed to celebrate the best of Kansas literature, arts and history, will offer a variety of activities for Kansans of all ages, including meet-the-author sessions, panel discussions, book signings and sales, and a special tent with projects for children. This event is free and open to the public.

Indie Book Fair, November 19, Orlando, FL. The Indie Book Fair’s mission is to create a space to allow independent authors to sell and showcase their work, build their readership and make everyone aware of their brand. The vision is through multiple book fair events that are FREE to the public and will include virtual buying for readers who cannot attend. The fair will be held 3 times a year.

Prince Edward Island National Park

Built in 1937, the park on the north shore of Prince Edward Island contains 10 square miles of red sandstone cliffs (悬崖), freshwater lakes, and Acadian forests. It is home to the endangered piping plover (笛鸻). Visitors to the park will be attracted by the enough wildlife found there— from the Atlantic white-sided dolphin to the snowshoe hare.

Vuntut National Park

Located in the northwest of Yukon Territory, the park is one of the most faraway national parks in Canada. The 4,345-square-mile park, which was built in 1995, has large wetlands in the south, known as Old Crow Flats, which are home to half a million birds and many kinds of other animals such as grizzly bears and muskrats.

Banff National Park

Banff National Park in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, which was built in 1885, is famous for the clear waters of Lake Louise, the amazing glaciers (冰川) of Icefields Parkway, and the 11,850-foot-tall Mount Forbes. The town of Banff is also within the park, which hosts the Banff Mountain Film Festival and is home to many cultural museums.

Waterton Lakes National Park

The park has high mountains, thick forests, colorful grassland, impressive rivers, and clear lakes. Built in 1895, Waterton Lakes is home to the 9,547-foot-tall Mount Blakiston—a popular climbing spot and the highest point within the park. The park protects over 60 species of mammals and more than 250 species of birds.

Before the invention, clothing used to be ironed on wooden planks balanced between chairs. Though it seems like a simple invention, Bone put a lot of thoughts into it, which was evident in the end product. Aside from solving the initial problem of uneven ironing, Boone also made the ironing board’s legs folded for storage and designed a curved (弧形的) shape for the body to accommodate sleeves and curved areas. Alongside her invention, Boone also became one of the first African-American woman to receive a patent.

Though there is no way of confirming the account, ancient writings (including Confucius’) attribute the first invention of silk to the Chinese Empress Lei Zu, who was four-teen at the time and had been enjoying tea in the imperial gardens when a fateful incident took place. A cocoon (茧) fell into her teacup and lost its cohesiveness (粘结性) upon contact with the hot water. The fact that the cocoon was a single strand of silk had drawn Lei Zu’s attention and she wove the thread into fabric, creating silk cloth.

Dr Shirley Ann Jackson broke the glass ceiling as the first African-American woman to be awarded a doctorate from MIT. She contributed to the invention of caller ID and call waiting during her research period at AT&.T Bell Laboratories, so we can now see the phone number and name of whoever is ringing our phones.

Dr Fiona Wood introduced spray-on skin repair technique to the world in the 1990s. The technique changed the way in which burn victims used to be treated, as spray-on skin repair technique can be directly applied to wounds to form a new layer of skin that promotes healing and minimises the risk of infection.
