In Japan, more than 25% of the population is over 65, a figure set to rise to 40 percent by 2050.
That means authorities need to think about ways to keep healthy and active for longer but also about how to cope with labor shortages.
At Cross Heart, more than half of the 119 caregivers are over 60, and 15 of them are over 70. The foundation that runs this nursing home and others in Kanagaw a Prefecture has raised the official retirement age to 70 but allows employees to keep working until 80 if they want to and can.
Although older workers have constraints—some can’t do the heavier tasks—they also offer advantages over younger workers who want time off for their children, said nursing home director Kaori Yokoo.
“Plus, because they’re close in age, they can relate to each other more, ” she said. For the older workers, the money is a nice benefit, but the main motivation is the activity and sense of community.
Hiroko Akiyama, at the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Gerontology, said a Japanese 65-year-old is in much better physical and mental shape than a 65-year-old a few decades ago. “They are full of energy, and healthy and long-liv ing,” she said. Her research has found that working helps keep seniors that way.
Meanwhile, researchers are working on robots that can lift the elderly out of beds and wheelchairs.
Still, Japan can’t rely only on seniors or, potentially, robots to staff its nursing homes, where the need will only grow as the population ages, analysts say.
Japan has agreements with Indonesia, Vietn am and the Philipp ines under which applicants who complete job training and pass a Japanese language test can work at a Japanese nursing home. But many Japanese also express deep concern about cultural differences.

The British love for dog-walking may have more to do with the walking than the dogs. Britons are big walkers –they came fifth in the world in a study in 2017, the highest in Europe. Dogs provide walkers with company and a purpose, so it may be that walking encourages dog-ownership.
But Julien Dugnoille, an expert at Exeter University, suspects dog-walking has a deeper significance. Dogs, he suggests, are a useful aid to a socially awkward nation. “Britons tend to have a chat with strangers and exchange a few jokes and comments about the weather without putting themselves in danger.”
A tradition among the British nobles of owning and training dogs also leads Dr Dugnoille to assume that dog-walking is a way to keep ancient honor. “When people in the park say Max is very well-behaved,” says Dr Dugnoille, “that is a way to show their authority in the art of dog training compared to those dog owners who are not in control of their own dog.”
But it’s not just about showing off, in his view. He believes walking with one’s best friend creates a time and space where dogs and humans meet as species and connect as individuals.
Still, Britons should not congratulate themselves too much on their behavior towards their dog companions. According to Dr Carri Westgarth of Liverpool University, “People say that a dog needs a walk every day, but they will find reasons why their dog doesn’t need a walk. They’ll say: he’s got company indoors, he’s nervous or he doesn’t like the rain.”

The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard—he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to stay up late into the night—but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually achieve much.
This phenomenon can be seen in most colleges. For example, a roommate looks through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV. The guy brings meals and packs of Red Bull to the study zone preparing for a paper-writing marathon.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and working long hours, the students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to achieve the task at hand. In the end, they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem is that most students don’t even realize they’re pseudo-working. To them, pseudo-working is work - it’s how they and their friends have always done it. They never think there might be a better way. On the other hand, straight-A students know all about pseudo-working. They fear it, and it not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a better student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a smallest amount of wasted effort. Some cognitive (认知的) science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize(最大化) the material integrated per time unit. To understand this better, just consider the following simple formula: work achieved = time spent * degree of focus.
Pseudo-working features a very low degree of focus. Therefore, to achieve something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A student s approach, on the other hand, increases his degree of focus in order to use less time.
1. Which of the following phenomenon is pseudo-working?A.Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture. |

Participating in Campus Welcome Activities
Most universities host welcome events before the academic year officially begins, including freshmen orientations, campus picnics, and entertainments like concerts.
Participating in such events is a great way to learn about school facilities and understand campus culture: What do students do for fun? What are their favorite classes? What is the history of your university? It can help you observe campus life outside the classroom.
Exploring Campus
Getting to know where essential campus resources are—such as the student advising center, psychological services, and the tutoring center—will make your first few weeks on campus a lot easier, because you won’t have to look for them while still getting used to your classes.
Take some time to check out the buildings where your classes will be held. This will prevent you from getting lost in the first few days of classes and familiarize you with how long it takes to get from place to place. If you’re worried about taking classes one after another in different buildings, a quick test run won’t hurt. That way, you will avoid potential time delays in getting to your classes.
Starting a Routine
Before getting too excited about all of the fun things you will be able to do during the week, remember that you do have a pretty big schedule change coming up. Starting classes means being in different places at different times, so it’s a great idea to start getting used to that routine right this week.
What helps you most is to schedule your sleep. Following the planned time will ensure you have enough sleep to get to those early classes and stay wide awake.
If you have other daily routines, such as exercising or talking on the phone with family, work those into your day-to-day life before classes start so that you get a better idea of how they fit in with your schedule.
1. Why are freshmen advised to have a quick test run between buildings?A.To see how many facilities they can use. | B.To avoid being late for future classes. |
C.To help those getting lost on campus. | D.To practice running on their way to class. |
A.On the first day of their classes. | B.Before the orientation week. |
C.After their first-day classes. | D.During the orientation week. |
A.Take physical exercise before class. | B.Leave their phones powered off. |
C.Take early classes every day. | D.Keep to the sleep schedule. |

Though cooling down isn’t proven to reduce muscle stiffness (僵硬) or pain, it can prevent dizziness and allow your heart rate and breathing to ease back to a normal rate, Harvard Medical School reports. Phyllis Mammarelli, a personal trainer at the Shenango Valley YMCA in Sharon, Pennsylvania, works with each of her clients on a cool down routine as she says it’s a beneficial part of exercising.
“Cooling down allows your body to gradually return to a low-intensity activity level, slowly reducing your respiratory (呼吸的) and heart rate until it’s equalized and back to normal,” she says.
Skipping the recovery phase of a workout isn’t proven to be harmful to your body, but Mammarelli warns that without cooling down, the body will take longer to return back to the low-intensity activity level you began your workout with.
There are also non-threatening side effects that could occur as a result of forgoing a cool down. Mammarelli warns that blood can gather or pool in your lower extremities (四肢) and lead to dizziness and fainting. Other side effects include your muscle pain and stiffness, which can occur 24-28 hours after your workout. These side effects are mostly seen in the elderly or those with cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and can be eased by warming up and cooling down.
Allow five to 10 minutes at the conclusion of your workout for a cool-down routine. During this period, continue your workout session, but at a much-reduced rate. If you’re pressed for time during your works or unsure how to allow your body to recover, Mammarelli suggests stretching muscles in a pain-free range of motion.
Adding a few additional minutes to your workout for cooling down may seem like an inconvenience, but the benefits outweigh the cost of finding extra time in your schedule.

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the changes from formal to casual office wear have been slow. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their workers to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for workers has really become an everyday thing,” said business adviser Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their workers to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new workers if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study made by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that casual dress has a side effect on work. Supporters of casual office wear also say that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”

If the plan eventually gets the green light, the 24-story structure will be built across the Little Colorado River about 6 miles upstream from the point where it meets the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon National Park. In fact, the dam’s planned location lies within the Navajo Nation Native American territory.
The dam would measure 240 feet high and 500 feet wide. The plan also involves a second 140-foot-high dam as well as other construction. The developers say the project would be able to produce 3,300-gigawatt(千兆瓦)hours of power.
The permit for the Little Colorado River site has now been accepted by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission(FERC), meaning the project is one step closer to becoming a reality. However, environmentalists are concerned about the damage that such a project could cause.
The Center for Biological Diversity(CBD) — a national, non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of endangered species and wild areas—has warned that the dam would cause flooding that has the potential to "eliminate" miles of river habitat for an endangered, federally protected fish known as the humpback chute(弓背鲑), which is found in the Grand Canyon.
Meanwhile, the CBD says that the project would “industrialize" lands near two sacred cultural sites of the Hopi Tribe, whose reservation is entirely surrounded by the Navajo Nation territory. Taylor McKinnon, a senior public lands campaigner at the CBD, said in a statement, "This would create profound cultural and biological harm. There will be an enormous effort to stop this dangerous proposal in its tracks."
The FERC says that public will be allowed to comment on or seek to prevent the project until November 22.

Now that we have jobs to do, food to buy and cook and other errands (差事) to run, even I sometimes think it would be a welcome change to have to sit down and quietly read and write with no distractions. But, in case you don’t remember — homework is pretty much every child’s least favorite thing to do. In the age of Netflix, Snapchat and wifi, the distractions are almost endless. It can sometimes almost be too hard to even keep up with all the new tech advances our kids are using, so how can we make sure that those advances take a back seat to our children’s education? Here are some ideas.
There’s no point in stopping the reality that young people are going to focus on their phones and tablets instead of other things at times. Your best way is to accept, actually the tech sector continues to be the most profitable and fast-growing industries and that’s unlikely to change fast. There are ways to use technology to help your kid do homework. Ask your teacher and school staff what apps and websites they’re using to teach lessons and supplements (补充) them with at-home activities as well.
Even though technology has changed, the basics haven’t. If you want to read, write and think properly, you need to have peace and quiet and the ability to focus, right? Well, your kids are just the same. Try and find a space in your home to enable your kids to do work away from televisions, the Internet or other distractions. Let me be clear: this shouldn’t be a prison. I feel like I’m my most productive working alone in an office or at a busy cafe with my headphones on. Getting lost in other realities helps my creativity flow. Placing kids in isolation can often have a harmful effect and doesn’t always equal being more productive.
I feel like “getting engaged” is always a big part of my advice for parents on just about everything. How can you make sure your children are being successful if you have no idea what they’re doing? How can you be sure they’re doing it right if you don’t know what is the correct answer? What do they need? You should be in touch with their teachers, have a sense of where the lessons are going, what kinds of assignments are being given and what success looks like in the classroom. Knowing all of that is key to your child’s success, especially when matched with some encouraging praise and helpful tips on how he can keep going. Thinking about how your child is best motivated by other things and using those methods here reasonably isn’t a bad idea.
And if by chance you’re having trouble solving that algebra equation (代数方程) or diagramming a sentence, don’t fear, you’re not alone. Use the school staff, other parents or friends as your support. Better to seek help than do noting.
We all know that homework isn’t exactly the most entertaining way anyone spends their time. And sometimes we can’t help but feel that since we left school, we’re done with homework forever. But the circle of life plays out in all times and it’s up to us to make sure that we pass on the lessons we’ve picked up and that while homework might seem dull, it’s how we build skills, learn real lessons and get on the road to greatness. That greatness is on the inside, it’s up to us as adults to enable the young people to bring it out. A key ingredient to achieving greatness is to take a lifelong learning.

The research by the United States Naval Academy and the University of Maryland tested what could best secure smartphones from so-called "shoulder surfing attacks". So, if you are worried about someone looking over your shoulder while you unlock your phone, would you be wiser to use a PIN or a pattern? According to this research at least, the answer to that question is pretty clear.
Those who have a single observation of your screen as you unlock it with a swipe pattern will be successful in knowing it 64.2% of the time. Security can be improved somewhat by removing lines on the pattern lock (35.3% success rate for shoulder surfers).
By comparison, the use of a six-digit PIN greatly reduces the chances for an attacker to determine how to unlock your smartphone, with just 10.8% of attacks being successful. In tests, viewers were able to determine the users' lock-screen patterns from up to six feet away, from a variety of different angles, even after a single viewing.
Indeed, when it comes to safety, past research has determined that an unlock pattern is about the same as a three-digit PIN -something I hope that none of us would rely upon.
The researchers' conclusion is that a PIN of six digits or more is the most secure de fence against shoulder surfing attacks, and while both types of pattern lock are poor, patterns without lines provide greater security.
Unsurprisingly, the research confirmed that phones with larger screens were found to provide less security against shoulder surfing attacks.
1. What did the research focus on?A.What lock-screen patterns people use. | B.When shoulder surfing attacks occur. |
C.Why people prefer numeric PIN codes. | D.How you can unlock your phone safely. |

SpaceX plans to deploy 12000, and perhaps later 42000, satellites with the aim of providing access (使用……的机会) to the entire world.
These satellites have the promise to change the way that the night sky looks. For comparison, there are 2600 satellites currently orbiting Earth. These days, spotting (发现) a few satellites in the sky is still an exciting activity.
There are many online tools available to predict when you might get a glimpse (一瞥) of a Starlink satellite. One, called Find Starlink , takes your location (位置) and tells you what time and where in the sky to look. Even with the help of a tool it can still be a game of chance, but if you try a few times, you will eventually see something.
To get the best chance of seeing a Starlink satellite, pick a clear night. Try to get away from light pollution by going to a park or an open field, for example. Let your vision (视力) adjust to (适应) the darkness, then keep an eye out for moving sources of light in the sky. Satellites are only visible (可见的) when they reflect (反射) sunlight back to Earth. Because of this, the best time to look is just after sunset or just before sunrise, when sunlight is still reflecting off the satellites but it is dark enough to see them.
If you can’t tell whether you are looking at is a satellite or something else, there are a few simple rules to tell the difference. If a point of light is steady (稳定的) and not moving compared with everything else, it is a star. If it is a bright light moving slowly compared with the stars, it is a planet. If it is a bright flash moving extremely quickly across the sky in seconds, it is a meteor (流星).
1. Why does the firm SpaceX plan to send more satellites into space ?A.To change the view of the night sky. |

During April and May last year, a team of more than 30 biologists, glaciologists, geologists, meteorologists, and geographers fanned out across Qomolangma’s southern side, conducting fieldwork high on the mountain. “We believe the best way to get a full scientific picture of Qomolangma is not just to do one kind of science,” says Paul Mayewski of the University of Maine, the leader of the effort.
Each individual study promises a unique picture of the mountain’s climate-past, present, and future. Ice cores will allow scientists to go back in time-tens, hundreds and perhaps thousands of years to learn about the environment. Snow and water samples give a look at what’s happening on the mountain, today, including the future of the glaciers. The team also fixed a network of automated weather stations, which will document upcoming weather trends for years to come.
One of the hardest tasks fell to Mayewski’s colleague Mariusz Potoeki, who hoped to drill ice cores at several places on the mountain, including the South Col (25,938 feet) and the top of Qomolangma (29,035 feet). The job required a specially designed drill system powered by batteries, and an excellent team to figure out how to prevent the cores from becoming liquid during their long journey back to the University of Maine’s laboratory for analysis.
Potocki abandoned his summit attempt due to the crowds of normal climbers. To his relief, Potocki succeeded in taking the highest ice core ever recovered, at just above Camp Four-26,312 feet above sea level. “The ice doesn’t lie.” Mayewski says. “The very idea that the highest part of the planet hasn’t been spared from human activity ought to be a real wake-up call for everybody.”
1. Which way does Paul Mayewski suggest to fully study Qomolangma?A.Working on it remotely in labs. | B.Teaming up with more countries. |
