It was a hot morning when I started my flight training. Nearly two hundred of us stood at attention. We were very excited that on this day, we would finally begin the "hands-on" part of flight training. We had been through thirteen tough weeks of basic training.
That morning, we were delighted to wait for the moment to climb into the training plane to actually begin learning to fly. Each of us was convinced that we would soon fly "above the best".
As we stood facing the officers, waiting for instructions, a tiny bird jumped out in front of us. It seemed confused and a little frightened. Suddenly, its mother flew over, as if encouraging it to fly. Everyone's eyes followed the birds. Even our officers turned to watch, mesmerized by the scene.
Over and over, the tiny bird ran as fast as its little legs could move, but it still failed to fly into the sky no matter how hard it had tried.
Completely ignoring the crowd of staring bystanders, the mother bird went on flying to and encouraging her little bird. AII two hundred of us watched breathlessly. Each time it made its way across the grass in front of us, we sighed at its failure.
Finally, after we had stood at attention for what seemed like hours just watching, those tiny wings could fly at last. You could almost see the little bird feel very proud. Then, we burst into wild cheers. We watched, as the little bird followed its mother to fly into the sky. Our officers turned back to us, smiling. We learned a lot from the little bird.

Because of my family’s warnings, I was afraid to take the subway at first. Luckily, I was able to overcome this fear by having my first trip by subway guided by a neighbor named Sasha. He had grown up in Manhattan, so he was familiar with the busy subway routes. He had taken the subway almost every day as a child with his family, and so I was encouraged to set off with him to learn the ins and outs of the New York subways.
Sasha showed me to the stop nearest our building led me down the steps from the busy street, and guided me skillfully through the fast–moving crowd in the station .I couldn’t decide whether to buy my ticket from the woman on the left of from the woman on the right, but Sasha confidently tugged (拉) me right up to the one on the left. I managed to speak out, ‘Canal Street, please,’and the woman silently took away my change and handed a ticket to me.
I couldn’t tell to which platform to go; I had always used landmarks to find my way around my hometown. After a little searching, though, I saw the sign that read ‘Canal St.’ hanging above the escalator (电动扶梯),so Sasha and I climbed aboard and rode down to our platform.
When we were finally seated on the train, Sasha looked at me with a pleased expression. I suppose, he was proud of how well he had served as a guide. ‘You look like you belong here in the big city,’ he said. I smiled back at him, wondering if I had already changed.
We arrived at the Canal Street station, and we rode up the escalator toward the street, taking care to stand well to one side to let more impatient passengers by. I had a feeling that I have been exploring fantastic caverns (洞穴) filled with treasures and new wonders of an undiscovered continent. I’ll always remember my first subway ride, when ‘going underground’ took on an entirely new meaning.

“I am, too,” Nyota replied, looking at the track in front of her. Nyota had fallen and fractured her wrist the previous week while training for the long jump, so she was volunteering to sell refreshments instead of competing along with her teammates.
Nyota wished Lily good luck and watched her friend run over to the track as spectators started to arrive. Nyota knew she should head over to the stand, but she kept staring at the place where she had fallen. “What’s the point of being here?” Nyota thought to herself.
Just then, she heard a friendly voice behind her say, “Hello, Nyota! Can you help me find a seat?” It was Mrs. Ogaz, Lily’s grandmother, whom Nyota knew well. “I want to sit up high so I can see, but I need help going up the stairs.”
“I would love to help you, Mrs. Ogaz,” replied Nyota.
Mrs. Ogaz leaned on Nyota’s good arm as they carefully climbed up the bleachers to a spot with a great view of the finish line. “Thank you so much! You’re very helpful.” Mrs. Ogaz’s comment lifted Nyota’s spirits.
Nyota hurried over to the stand and started selling soft drinks. Before she knew it, the track meet was over. Despite being in elementary school, the two girls have organized fundraisers(资金筹集).During their first year, the girls raised $1,500 to save tigers. “We went to a zoo and asked if we could help and it became this huge fun thing. We never expected it to get so big,” the girls said.

They said they were close to their goal and the zoo couldn’t be happier.
“Their awareness of what’s happening to tigers and their wanting to educate people on what’s happening to tigers are unbelievable,” Kassner, an animal expert, said. “Three kinds of tigers have already died out and the remaining six are all endangered. Jayden Sutton, a high school senior, went on foot each day from school to his job at a restaurant and then back home. Sutton was determined to work and make enough money to eventually buy his own vehicle.
Sutton said he’d leave school at 3:30 pm, then walk miles to his job at the restaurant. After his work, which usually lasted six to eight hours, he walked home, sometimes not arriving back until almost midnight.
That all changed when Myers saw him walking down the road in the rain in December. “The young man was insistently in a rush walking to work, saying ‘I can’t be late,’” Myers said. “He begged me to give him a ride. After dropping Sutton off, Myers said his heart and determination filled her with tears. “He was smiling in good spirits and that’s a child worth blessing,” she told Fox News. So, Myers shared Sutton’s story on the GoFundMe page, which raised more than $ 9, 000 from 186 donors.

It doesn’t sound like the most common thing to do during math class, but Bethany Lambeth, a teacher from Wake County, says that ever since she fixed cycling machines under her students’ desks, the quality of their work has improved greatly. They are paying more attention to what the teachers say, and, most importantly, they are no longer fidgeting all the time.
“Before, they were drumming on their desks or touching other students. They don’t do that any more now. Their feet are getting the movement out,” she said. “There has been a huge increase in the quality of our students’ work and a decrease in the amount of missing work. I think the world is changing a lot and kids need to be able to do something different.”
Lambeth fixed the cycling machines at the end of last year, which cost around $150 each. The cost was covered by money from kind people. Not all desks have pedals (踏板) under them, so not all the children have to use one. The school is hoping to get more pedals because of the role cycling machines could play.
The kids clearly love the new “toys”. Sofia Fedele, one of Lambeth’s students, said cycling helped her focus on her work during class. “I usually tap my feet and stuff to keep me focused, I think pedaling is much better, it keeps me exercising and focused,” she said.
Quinn Spear, another student in Lambeth’s class, also mentioned the good effect on health of cycling during class. He told reporters that he had pedaled 5.5 miles and burned 133 calories, all before 10 a.m.

Think beyond grades
Getting good grades in high school is important, but focusing only on straight A's could go wrong. Spending too much time on your schoolwork will leave you little time to explore opportunities outside of the classroom. Extracurricular (课外的) activities are necessary because they serve as form of career exploration. They can help you figure out your work preferences, like whether you are a “people person (擅长交际的人)”or prefer to work alone. Nowadays, most well-known colleges care about candidates' experiences as much as their grades.
Seek advice from grown-ups
Talk to your parents, teachers and school counselors (顾问) about how they started their careers. Even though you're not interested in the careers they are in, it would be useful to learn about the process which got them where they are now. If you find your friend's' mother doing worthwhile job by chance, ask her if job shadowing (体验工作) is possible in her company during vacation After all, seeing a typical day in the position you have an interest in can be an invaluable experience.
Start your search online
If you really have no idea what you can do when you grow up, take online career quizzes to get ideas about what professions naturally match your skills, interests and personality traits (特点). For the time being, you just need to focus on finding a field or two that interests you, rather than a specific career. Chances are you'll change your mind several times before finding a career that you want to stick to. Starting to explore career options now can at least help you decide what your potential major might be.

One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t returned home. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie didn’t show up the next day, and although they made their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.
Curiously, Spotty showed up at Brownie’s house alone, barking and jumping. Busy with their own lives, they paid no attention to the nervous little neighbor dog.
Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take “no” for an answer. Ted, Brownie’s owner, was continuously disturbed by the angry, determined little dog. Spotty followed Ted around, barking all the time, then darting toward a nearby empty lot (an area of land) and back, as if to say, “Follow me! It’s urgent (紧急的)!”
Eventually, Ted followed Spotty across the empty lot as Spotty stopped to race back and barked encouragingly. The little dog led the man to a deserted spot. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, one of his legs stuck in a steel trap. Frightened, Ted now wished he had followed Spotty earlier.
Then Ted noticed something. Spotty had done something else besides leading Brownie’s human owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog, Ted found some food remains of every meal. Brownie had been fed that week! Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly, in the hope of keeping his friend alive. Spotty had actually stayed with Brownie to protect him from hunger and other dangers, and keep his spirits up.

These birds had recovered after the Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center rescued and took care of them. “We will speed up our efforts to push the establishment of district-level wildlife rescue centers to jointly guard the health of wildlife,” said Du Lianhai, director of the center.
The center was set up in 2001 and built a wildlife rescue base in the capital’s Shunyi District in 2005. Staff at the base have rescued and rehabilitated over 30,000 wild animals in total.
Wildlife protection has been strengthened in Beijing in recent years. On June 1, the city’s newly adopted regulation on wildlife protection took effect, introducing stricter and more concrete measures to protect the environment and wildlife.
For example, the regulation states clearly that Beijing bans hunting throughout the year, compared with the previous regulation which bans hunting during the periods of March to May and September to November each year. The new regulation also gives severer punishment for poachers.
After years of monitoring, data with the Beijing Gardening and Greening Bureau recently showed ecological reconstruction progress. The species and quantity of wild animals in Beijing are continuously increasing, with the number of terrestrial spinal wild animals (陆地脊椎野生动物) growing from 461 species in 1994 to more than 500. The habitat of the endangered bird has expanded from Fangshan District to the whole city, according to the bureau.
“The enforcement of the new regulation marked a new phase in Beijing’s wildlife protection work,” said Dai Mingchao, deputy director of the Beijing Gardening and Greening Bureau.
“We will step up the publicity of the regulation and raise citizens’ awareness of wildlife protection,” Dai said. “In our integrated protection of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasslands, we take into full consideration the requirements of food-chain construction, ecological corridor construction, and wildlife and their habitat protection.”

Walmart will offer all full-time, part-time and salaried Walmart staff an opportunity to attend college for $1 a day for the study of their college program. Walmart will cover the full cost — beyond financial aid — of tuition, fees and books. According to personal finance comparison site Make Lemonade, there are more than 44 million borrowers who collectively owe more than $1.4 trillion of student loan debt. With this program, Walmart wants to ensure that its staff can earn a college degree without being involved in student loan debt.
Walmart has partnered with three non-profit universities where its employees can earn a degree online while working. Walmart staff are qualified to apply once they have worked at Walmart for at least 90 days. Walmart expects that all Walmart staff who apply will be accepted. If an employee leaves the company before completing a degree, the employee does not have to pay back any costs to Walmart, but will no longer have his/her education subsidized (被资助).
Currently, Walmart will only cover Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in business and supply chain management since they are “parts of a broader approach to preparing the workforce to succeed today and into the future.”
“Investing in the personal and professional success of our staff is vital to Walmart’ s future success,” said Greg Forman, CEO of Walmart U.S., in a statement. “We know training and learning opportunities enable the staff to deliver for customers while growing and advancing in their career.”
Walmart is partnering with Guild Education, a leading education benefits platform, which will provide academic counselors to help Walmart staff with everything from the application process to choosing the right degree. I think the job is getting to be too much for me.
“It will cost 10 dollars,” Jamie said.” If that’s OK “, Mark added.

Mark was going to say that Mrs. Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off. “We’ll come back later.”

When Mark showed thanks to Mrs. Grady, Mrs. Grady laughed. “It was nothing. Good neighbors watch out for each other, don’t they? ”
And now Mrs. Grady needed Mark as much as he’d needed her last summer. He smiled and waved at Mrs. Grady, then his shovel deep into the snow.
