There are many changes that can happen in a person’s life. Some changes are very small and would not affect your life very much. However, other events could be very important and could change a person’s whole life. The important event that changed my life is coming to the United States to study.

When first arrived in this country, I realized that a great transformation (转变) would happen in my life both physically and mentally. After spending more than two months in the United States, I firmly believe that moving to the United States is a beneficial change for me. This change provides me a chance to lead healthy lifestyle as well as a new way of thinking that are important for me.

It is necessary to have this change as it offers me a healthy lifestyle. Before coming to the United States, I used to stay up late at night to study and wake up early in the morning. For example, enjoy the American-style- meal which includes having a fresh salad instead of cooked vegetables. This method of cooking vegetables helps me absorb more vitamins from them.

Additionally, this most important change enables me to think differently and internationally. This is my first time living in North-America country. Hence, I have a brand-new chance to experience a new culture. By knowing more about different cultures, I have become more considerate and understanding of various habits as well as behaviors from different races.

【推荐1】As I look up at the hundreds of fireworks in the sky, I hear the bells ringing in a small temple signifying the coming of the Chinese New Year. Though I may not believe in or understand many of the New Year traditions here, the similarities between the coming of this New Year and the beginning of my new life in China are not lost on me.

My first few days in China were a culture shock to say the least. Having arrived late in the semester, I immediately had to begin my beginners’ Chinese classes, along with the newest class of overseas students. Being surrounded by a language that is not your own is unbelievably frustrating and isolating. Due to the picture-based fashion of Chinese writing, it’s not like you can have a guess, or work it out through whatever little knowledge you have other Latin-originated languages. If you don’t know what it says, then that’s it. However, with time passing, I have found myself progressing, though painfully slowly. The first time I direct a taxi by myself, the driver actually understands where I want to go, which is hugely rewarding. Still, it is never long until my sheer lack of language skill is exposed and I come crashing back to earth, usually immediately upon leaving the taxi.

Gaining a language is a huge valuable skill. However, it is not the only thing I will gain in China. After this year of learning Chinese, I aim to gain my Master’s degree here at UJN. Opportunities do just pop up rather occasionally: from being offered jobs teaching English, to being asked to appear on game-shows for Shandong TV. So, for now, I am just looking forward to expanding my cultural horizons and enjoying my time here. Everything takes some time getting used to, but that’s part of the adventure and, most of all, employment. So, much like the Chinses New Year that I was lucky enough to be part of, I am just looking forward to a fresh start and a new journey in China.

1. Why couldn’t the author guess the meaning of the Chinese language?
A.Because of his late arrival.B.Because of his experience of culture shock.
C.Because of the unique why of Chinese writing.D.Because of his knowing lite of the Latin language.
2. What does the author want to show through his taxi experience?
A.He is pleased to have made progress in Chinese.B.He is good A chatting with the taxi driver.
C.He finds it easy to order a taxi in China.D.He is poor at using public transport.
3. What is the author’s present expectation?
A.To be a teaching assistant.B.To settle down in China.
C.To be involved in more cultural activities.D.To become a host on TV.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Studying in China: overwhelming but rewarding.B.Coming to China: more opportunities awaiting.
C.Acquiring Chinese: valuable skills guaranteed.D.Learning Chinese: adventurous but enjoyable.

【推荐2】Language Learning

Learning a new language can be tricky at any age. But in a recent study, scientists have pinpointed the exact age at which your chances of reaching fluency in a new language seem to quickly drop off: 10. Does this mean you should quit your French class if you’re older than 10? Non!

1     It found that it’s “nearly impossible” to reach fluency if you start learning a language after age 10. That’s not because language skills start to go downhill. “You’re still learning fast,” says Joshua Hartshorne, one of the study’s coauthors. “It’s just that you run out of time, because your ability to learn starts dropping at around 17 or 18 years old.” People who start learning a new language after age 10 may still become quite good, the authors say.     2

Kids may be better than adults at learning new languages for many reasons. Children’s brains are more adaptable than those of adults.     3     “All learning involves the brain changing,” Hartshorne says. “Children’s brains seem to be a lot more good at changing.” Kids may also be more willing than adults to try new things. And while adults tend to fall back on the rules and patterns of their first language, kids are able to approach a new one with a blank slate.

4     It promised to guess people’s native language, dialect, and home country, based on their responses to English grammar questions. At the end of the quiz, people entered their actual native language. They also reported if and when they had learned any other languages and where they had lived. Nearly 670,000 people took the quiz. Analyzing people’s responses and grammar mistakes allowed them to draw conclusions about language learning.

The findings also offer ideas for adults hoping to pick up a new language.     5     Moving to a place where your chosen language is spoken all the time is the best way for adults to learn. Learners of all ages can search out native speakers in their community to talk with. By creating an immersive environment, it’s possible to become good at speaking a new language.

A.Now that’s worth talking about!
B.But they are unlikely to become fluent.
C.The study appeared in the journal Cognition.
D.For the study, the researchers created an online quiz.
E.This means they’re better able to respond to new information.
F.This gave researchers huge amounts of data from English speakers of many ages and backgrounds.
G.Researchers found that people did better when they learned by immersion rather than only in a classroom.

【推荐3】The United States will introduce a new and comprehensive(综合的) exam for students who seek to study in American and other English-speaking countries, Xinhua News Agency reported from New York.

The exam, which stands for a great change from the current English level test, was disclosed by Theresa Chang Wei Jen, associate director of the International Service of the US College Board, America’s leading educational organization.

The Advanced Placement International English Language (APIEL) will be offered for the first time throughout the world on May 10, 2002, said Jen.

However, the APIEL is a strange title to most Chinese students, and it is unlikely to soon gain the similarity of other already existing exams, such as the TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language), the GRE(Graduate Record Examination), or the IELTS(International English Language Testing System).

“I have never heard of such a test and I would prefer the IELTS if I need another exam,” said Xu Jingyan, a graduating student from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, who wants to study in England and has already taken the TOEFL.

Most of Xu’s classmates have never heard of the APIEL. “The APIEL is designed for international students who wish to get university studies in English-speaking countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia.” said Jen.

The APIEL has been adopted, said Jen, because the TOEFL can no longer accurately reflect the abilities of students of using the English language comprehensively in an academic environment. Xinhua reported that a fairly large number of foreign students who earned high scores in TOEFL exam turned out to be very ordinary educational performers after admission.

Compared with the TOEFL, the APIEL measures a student’s ability to read, write, speak and understand English through testing his or her skills in listening comprehension, speaking with accuracy(精确) and resourcefulness, and writing with clarity(清晰) and fluency, Jen said.
