One & Only, Cape Town (South Africa)
Cape Town is the continent's hottest happening city, and One & Only is the place to be for luxurious lodging. It's in the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, within walking distance of great shopping, galleries and restaurants. You may be reluctant to leave the hotel, though: It has one of the best spas in the city, along with three restaurants, including Africa's first Nobu. The hotel also houses NEO, which sells South Africa's hippest designer fashions.
The hotel spa has all the latest features, including a cutting-edge gym, a vitality pool (it takes a whirlpool to the next level) and a "mood-boosting" Ice Fountain, which use varying water temperatures, aromas, soothing music and relaxing colored lights to rid you of stress.
Info: One & Only, Dock Road, Cape Town; 011-27-21-431-5800, capetown.oneandonlyresorts.com. Doubles from $662 a night; includes full buffet breakfast.
Tamarack Lodge (Mammoth Lakes)
Tamarack is a great escape for all tastes and all seasons, with something for nearly every budget. It's just a mile from Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and 2 1/2 miles from downtown Mammoth Lakes; it's private and woodsy but still handy to activities.
Accommodations include European-style guest rooms, with antique beds and quilts, in the historic lodge; free-standing historic cabins; and luxurious cabins as well as fireplaces and living rooms.
Info: Tamarack Lodge, 163 Twin Lakes Road, Mammoth Lakes; (800) 626-6684, www.tamaracklodge.com; doubles from $89.
Ritz-Carlton (South Beach, Miami)
The Ritz, built in 1953 and originally known as the DiLido, was one of most fashionable hotels . If you are looking to indulge, hire a personal shopper to take you to the boutiques, or rent a daybed by the huge pool or a Ritz cabana at the DiLido Beach Club, only a short stroll away.
If you're hungry, get a table outside at the hotel's highly rated Bistro One LR, which serves Spanish Riviera cuisine. If you're looking to venture out into the Miami scene, Macchialina, with reasonably priced classic Italian cuisine, is the ticket. Order a Coco Before Chanel cocktail and tuck into dishes even tastier than Mama used to make.
Info: Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, 1 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach; (786) 276-4000, lat.ms/1K13fgD. Doubles from $549.
The Modern (Honolulu)
Think of the Modern as more jet-set Hawaii, offering an usual beach experience. Slightly removed from the noise of Waikiki, the Modern overlooks the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, with the surf break of Waikiki beyond.
The Sunrise Pool looks like a scene out of Ibiza on the Mediterranean, with rest rooms set in the water and women drifting around in gauzy(纱似的) cover-ups. The amazing Sunset Pool — it's a man-made lagoon (泻湖)surrounded by 100 tons of sand — is for adult guests。
If this is not your scene, escape to your room, decorated mostly in white and where the music does not reach. There are several in-house restaurants, the best is by celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto, of "Iron Chef" fame, who mixes Japanese and Western ingredients into melt-in-your-mouth masterpieces.
Info: The Modern, 1775 Ala Moana Blvd., Honolulu; (855) 970-4161, www.themodernhonolulu.com. Doubles from $349.

A pot of tea, a plate of finger sandwiches and a selection of pastries and scones: In America, this wonderful way to wile away the afternoon is commonly, though mistakenly, known as “high tea.” In Britain, where it originated, “high tea” is simply an old-fashioned name for the evening meal; it’s also called “meal tea.” The light, elegant, scone-centric meal served at fancy hotels is called “low tea” or “afternoon tea”. Dear Parents, Welcome to 3rd grade! Thank you for entrusting your child with us this year. My goal for this year is to help your child to be an independent learner. I promise an amazing school year with you and your child. Together with this letter, I’ve sent some forms for you to fill out. I need this information to learn more about your child. You can send them back to me (through your child) not later than this Friday, January 29th. I believe that communication is the key to a successful classroom experience. Your child will bring home a daily planner for homework. My classroom blog(博客) (http://classconnect.org/rruiz/) is your window to our classroom learning. I do a weekly update so that you can know what we’ve learned for the week or check our lessons for the next week. Please check the blog to learn more about classroom rules this week. Be sure to talk about these with your child. I will go over everything again during our parents meeting sometime in March to explain more about these key points. My door is always open. If you have opinions to share, just email me at rrruiz@sdho.org or send a note through your child. I also have meeting times during the day, so if you’d like to speak with me in person, please get in touch with the school office. Thank you again. I can’t wait to get started! We always enjoy pointing out some unusual holidays to add to your calendar. Now jot these down, learn something new and have fun!
Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17)
If you have encountered a homeless person and given money, that's a random act of kindness. The idea of this day is to get lots of people doing something kind for someone they don't know with no expectation of getting anything in return. This concept is trickier with social distancing but even a big smile and a “hi!’’ from across the street qualifies.
I Forgot Day (July 2)
Did you forget to call Grandma on her birthday or return that soccer ball you borrowed from a friend three months ago? Today is a good day to clean the slate. Make a list of things you meant to do but forgot. Work through the list, and don't get discouraged if you don't accomplish everything in one day. Just remember to keep the list in a place where you'll see it. Otherwise, you know what will happen.
DOGust First (August 1)
If your family is one of the many that adopted dogs from animal shelters last year, you may not know, for example, Luna or Cooper's actual birthday. The North Shore Animal League thought of that problem in 2008 and picked today as the birthday of all shelter dogs. Give your pup extra love today, and consider what you can do to help other sheller dogs.
World Vegetarian Day (October 1)
It’s not hard to go without meat for one day, but how about one month? The North American Vegetarian Society asks people to help reduce greenhouse gases by pledging to cat no meat, fish or fowl (basically chicken or turkey) in October. The pledge is tricky for kids to make on their own because Mom and Dad are usually in charge of preparing meals. Ask them if you can participate or if the whole family could try it. You will probably be surprised about how many tasty meals are meatless.
1. Which can be described as a random act of kindness?A.John accepted a new job for a better salary. |

【推荐2】Educators today are more and more often heard to say that computer literacy is absolutely necessary for college students. Many even argue that each incoming freshman should have his or her own microcomputer. What advantages do computers offer the college students?
Any student who has used a word processor will know one compelling reason to use a computer: to write papers. Although not all students feel comfortable composing on a word processor, most find revising and editing much easier on it. One can alter, insert, or delete just by pressing a few keys, thus ridding students of the need to rewrite or retype. Furthermore, since the revision process is less difficult, students are more likely to revise as often as is necessary to end up with the best paper possible. For these reasons, many freshman English courses require the use of a word processor.
Computers are also useful in the context of language courses, where they are used to drill students in basic skills. Software programs strengthen ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction, as well as instruction in French, German, Spanish, and other languages. By using these programs on a regular basis, students can improve their skills in a language while proceeding at their own pace.
Similarly, business and accounting students find that computer spreadsheet (电子表格) programs are all but important to many aspects of their work, while students pursuing careers in graphic arts, marketing, and public relations find that knowledge of computer graphic (绘图) is important. Education majors learn to develop grading systems using computers, while social science students use computers for analyzing and graphically displacing their research results.
It is no wonder then, that educators support the purchase and use of microcomputers by students. A useful tool, the computer can help students learn. And that is, after all, the reason for going to college.

C.complete a freshman’ course | D.improve students’ writing skills |

A.Educational experts have developed grading systems. |
B.The computer has fund its way into social science. |
C.Rarely do accounting students use computers. |

A.More college students should major in computer science. |

Mr Gibb said, “Schools obviously are free to set their own behaviour policies but my own view is that schools should ban (禁止)mobile telephones and smart phones inside school, and particularly inside classrooms. I believe very strongly that children should be limiting their own use at home. Every hour spent online and on a smart phone is an hour less talking to family, and it's an hour less exercise and it's an hour less sleep. And of course it is a lack of sleep that research is showing can have a damaging effect on a child's mental health.”
The parents are told that children will be asked to break off at least every two hours and avoid social media before bedtime. The UK would be following in the footsteps of European countries if schools were to introduce a ban. with French pupils being told to leave their smart phones at home when they returned from their summer holidays last year.
At the Festival of Education at Wellington College last summer, Professor Michael from America said that any sensible head would ban mobile phones. “It's far too distracting for children having mobile phones. Texting, playing games, all this takes place. Mobile phones go off in classrooms, disrupting lessons. Ban them. If children want to use a phone in an emergency they can use the school phone.”
1. What's Nick Gibb's attitude towards using mobile phone in school?A.Cautious. | B.Supportive. |

【推荐3】For some kids, old photos and baby pictures are embarrassing. For others, they are valuable keepsakes(纪念品). But for thousands of children living in orphanages(孤儿院)worldwide, these records of the past simply don’t exist. Either the kids’ parents weren’t around to take photos, or the pictures have been lost. Whatever the reason is, the Memory Project is giving orphans a lasting document of their youth.
Over the last two years, the Memory Project has provided hand-painted portraits to more than 4, 000 children living in orphanages in poor countries. Ben Schumaker, 24, got the idea when he was visiting an orphanage in Guatemala in Central America. But he’s not creating the portraits(肖像)alone. Students in hundreds of high school art classes across the U. S. paint them using photos sent from the orphanages.
Schumaker believes that the artists benefit from the project as much as the orphans do. “There are two purposes of the Memory Project,” he said. “One is to offer a special gift to the child abroad. The other is to help open the eyes of the student who is painting.” Staring into the eyes of another person, Schumaker believes, it creates a real connection. This connection raises awareness in U. S. schools about the needs of the world’s poor children. “It’s about planting a seed,” he said.
Schumaker is also working on Books of Hope, a project in which students of all ages put together homemade books for children in Uganda and India. He hopes that one day children in Uganda and India will send books to the U. S. “It’s important to me to have it be a two-way exchange,” Schmnaker says.
