Black Mamba a Legend That Will Never Die

It’s hard to believe Kobe is gone.

The NBA superstar,     1     great talent and win-at-all-costs spirit made him one of the most distinguished athletes in history, was the rare celebrity who didn’t need a last name.

Still youthful at 41, Bryant — who died in a helicopter crash on January 26 in California — looked     2     he could suit up any minute and drop 30 points on a rival(竞争对手) NBA team. It doesn’t seem that long ago that he was scoring 60 points in his final NBA game.

With a highly decorated career spanning 20 years — all with the Lakers — Bryant is all but     3     (assure) of being a first-ballot inductee (第一候选人) into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, alongside Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett, later this year.

Bryant,     4     18-time All-Star, was famous for his astonishing scoring ability and his championship pedigree (总冠军血统). He teamed up with fellow All-Star Shaquille O’Neal     5     (win) three consecutive NBA titles from 2000 to 2002, and later won two more rings, in 2009 and 2010.

Known as the “Black Mamba”, Bryant finished his career with 33,643 points in the regular season, which put him at No. 3 among NBA’s scoring leaders, behind only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) and Karl Malone (36,928)     6     LeBron James surpassed him just one day before Bryant’s untimely death.

“Kobe was so much more than an athlete. He was a family man, which was     7     we had most in common. Whenever we got together, I would hug his kids and he would embrace     8    .” O’Neal wrote on Twitter.

“Kobe was one of the most extraordinary players in the history of our game with accomplishments that are truly legendary(传奇般的),” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “But he     9     (remember) most for inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete     10     the very best of their ability.”

In 1915,Maurice E. McLoughlin, a well-known tennis player, published an instructional autobiography     1     (call) Tennis as I Played It. Two years earlier, McLoughlin had become the first American finalist at the Wimbledon tournament in England and tennis fans were excited to uncover the secrets of his success. Anticipation for McLoughlin’s story grew even more in 1914.Winning a number of major tournaments that year, he     2     (declare) the Number 1 tennis player in the world. When Tennis as I Play It     3     come out in 1915,no one had any reason to suspect that it might have been written by     4     else. However, the author of Tennis as I Play was not McLoughlin at all, but the as-yet unknown novelist Sinclair, his ghostwriter. Why, then, is Tennis as I Play It considered the tennis player’s book?

A ghostwriter is an author who writes a text that is officially credited to another author, and the history of such practices is     5     (long) than we might expect. In other words, Tennis as I Play It was not the first famous ghostwritten book, and it won’t be the last. Ghostwriter can happen for a number of reasons, and     6     its merits are debatable, it remains an acceptable practice in the publishing world. Some in the industry suggest that as many as half of non-fiction books are written with the help from ghostwriter.

Today, ghostwriting     7     take a number of different forms. It is perhaps most prominent in the autobiographies and memories of celebrities. Is the practice restricted     8     celebrity autobiographies and memories? No, ghostwriting is equally prominent in lesser-known spheres as well. Political speeches, for example, are often credited to the politician who delivers them, and then that politician just reads the speech from a teleprompter. In addition, many popular songs claim a popular singer or performer as songwriter; therefore they have been shaped more by a producer than by any of the credited songwriters.

Ghostwriting--whether we approve of or not--is here     9     (stay).Sometimes as in the case of Sinclair Lewis, the ghostwriters will eventually become famous authors in their own right. Much more often, we are moved by the writing of authors     10     names we will never learn.

Left. Right. Left. Right again.

Getting lost in the rhythm of my turns was one of my favorite parts of skiing. Whenever I feel the soft, powdery snow beneath my skis, I feel like I’m capable of     1    .

As soon as I joined the team, I was placed at its       6     (low) level. However, I never stopped climbing the rankings     7     I was placed into the highest group. At that point, I was the only girl on my team. I was put down at first; nobody wanted to ride the chairlift with me. But as time passed, I slowly became more accepted. And this entire process took three years.

In the past, having been forced to assume the roles of stay-at-home and motherly figures, women couldn’t imagine       8     they wanted to be. Even today, in some countries, there are still so many cases     9     people are not yet accepting the idea that women can make their own choices or pave their own paths. But if we are to fully accept these views, we will be able to move closer to equality.

Being a girl in such a sport can be difficult, but I’m actually thankful that my experiences have taught me to face whatever setbacks I meet with in life. I encourage you, all the girls,     10     (step) out of your comfort zone to show the boys that girls are just as powerful as they are.
