If you are arriving at London Heathrow Airport and are not transferring another flight outside Britain or Northern Ireland, you must pass through Passport Control and Customs immediately after leaving your plane. If you are not British or a citizen of the European Community, you must fill out a special form before your passport is examined. This form is called a landing card and should be given to you during the flight to London. After landing, follow the ARRIVALS signs. Make sure you are in the right channel when you reach Passport Control. There is one channel for holders of European Community passports, and a second channel marked “Other Passports”.
Baggage Reclaim Area
After passing through Passport Control, follow the signs to the Baggage Reclaim Area. If you have luggage which was carried in the aircraft along with other cargo, it will be delivered to you in the Baggage Reclaim Area. Look for the sign with your flight number. If you have only hand luggage, go directly through the Baggage Reclaim Area to Customs.
Customs
All passengers must pass through Customs after Passport Control. There is a choice of two channels, Green and Red. If you have nothing to declare, go through the Green Channel. If you are not sure about your Duty Free allowances, or if you have something to declare, go through the Red Channel. Information about Duty Free allowances can be found on special notice-boards in the Baggage Reclaim Area. You should study this information carefully whether you are going through the Red Channel or not. Please note that if you go through the Green Channel, you may be stopped and asked to open your luggage for inspection.

I AM … MR TREBUS | ||||||||||
Some years ago, an 80-year-old man hit the headlines when the local council tried to force him out of his own house in London. Mr. Trebus, who’d had to leave his hometown in Poland after Germany invaded at the beginning of the Second World War, later served as a tank commander in the British army. After he settled in London, he began collecting all kinds of things. He would tour the local neighbourhood recovering things from bins that others had seen as mere rubbish. He then took this junk home and sorted it into piles of similar things: a room packed with vacuum cleaners, a corner for old doors, another for windows. He also managed to acquire practically every record Elvis Presley ever made. By the time the council came to evict (驱逐) the old man, he had just a tiny space in his kitchen to live in, surrounded by piles of old newspapers and children’s toys. Yet he resisted eviction, arguing that everything he kept was useful. He was cleverly over-the-top, but let’s face it, there’s a bit of Mr Trebus in most of us. How many collectors do you know? Personally, I have boxes of old comics in the attic, which I don’t read, but can’t get rid of. Who hasn’t made some impulse purchase, which has then been left lying in some cupboard for years? How many of you have a drawer like mine in the kitchen: a drawer full of caution and fear, stuffed with good intentions; packed with optimism and meanness and, of course, all rubbish? In my drawer, there are a number of instructions and guarantees for things I’ve bought over the years, just in case they break down or I forget how to use them. There are also a large number of dead batteries which I’ve been meaning to take to the recycling centre and a number of leaflets — one about a local gym I still haven’t joined. There are various odd screws, nails and pins (I’d have to buy new packs if I didn’t keep them), a broken cup (I must buy some glue to stick it back together), and finally a large number of foreign coins (they might be collector’s items one day, they might be valuable). | ||||||||||

She sat down opposite him and told him how a cafeteria worked.
“Start out at that end,” she said, “Just go along the line and choose what you want. At the other end they’ll tell you how much you have to pay.”
“I soon learned that’s how everything works in America,” the grandfather told my friend later, “Life’s a cafeteria here. You can get anything you want as long as you want to pay the price. The man with a story of some stirring adventure always takes the floor Men will stop the most important discussion to listen. Women will forget to rock the cradle. Boys and girls will neglect any sport or game. Try it sometime and see how it grips all kinds and all ages. And the reason is that none of us ever really grows up. We are always boys and girls, a little older in years, but with the same nature—alert to the new, questioning, investigating, growing, living; stirred by martial music; thrilled by the sight of the fire-houses dashing madly down the street; lured by tales of subtle intrigue (阴谋)and splendid daring.
It would be sad if men and women ever lost this capacity to be attracted by tales of heroism. The man whose heart leaps for joy at the sight of a heroic deed is the man who will act the hero when his turn comes. No, the love of adventure will never be lost. It is a fundamental part of human nature, just as sentiment (感情) is.
So we reasoned that a magazine edited for this universal hunger of human nature for adventure ought to have a wide appreciation and appeal, and we decided to publish such a magazine and call it ADVENTURE.
It is published as a magazine wherein thousands of men and women can find adventure without being obliged to read through large amounts of stuff they care little about for the sake of getting a little they care a lot about, which is frankly made for the hours when the reader cannot work, or does not wish to, or is too weary to work and made for the reader’s recreation rather than his or her creative hours. If you care for stirring stories (and who does not?) —if you wish to get away for a brief time from the hard grind of the daily mill so that you can come back to it again with renewed passion and courage to walk through the knotty problems and nagging limitations, get a copy of Adventure.
You can get away for such a trip every month for 15 cents or you can get a season ticket entitling you to twelve trips for $1.50. No other kind of story in the magazine; just Adventure Stories. Fact-stories as well as fiction stories .If you don’t like that kind, don’t buy; but if you do like that kind, Adventure is sure to delight you.

【推荐3】Recently I rolled into a local restaurant to try an Impossible Burger, an all-plant patty(人造肉饼) invented by Impossible Foods. It's well known for having an strangely chewy(有咀嚼感), even bloody, meat-like quality, a surprising verisimilitude(逼真) that has made it ''perhaps the country's most famous burger, '' as New York magazine wrote. One bite into its wonderful, smoky taste and, damn, I was convinced.
This is good news, because the time has come to consume fake meat. In the fight against climate change, meat replacement is something we can try. A University of Oxford study recently found that, to keep global warming below 2 degrees this century, we need to be eating 75 percent less beef and 90 percent less pork.
However, diets are culturally enshrined, so changing them will be hard. It isn't easy to replace 75 to 90 percent of beef and pork with fake meat. The first taste of an Impossible Burger—a moment when low expectations work a powerful magic in the product's favor—is one thing. But how do you keep meat-eaters asking for more after their sixth, and their 26th?
To get to true mass adoption, fake meat will need to compete favorably with the real thing on multiple fronts. Impossible Foods' goal is to drive the price of its product below that of Safeway's 80/20 hamburger meat, at which point people will simply vote with their wallets. The new industry also wants to improve on animal flesh in various ways. Fake meat has an advantage over traditional meat because ''you won't need to refrigerate it'' cofounder Niko Koffeman says. Plus, custom(定制的) production could improve choice. ''You could have very soft and tender meat for elderly people,'' Koffeman adds. ''You could have a tailored meat for whatever you need.''
You can tell the world is shifting this way, because the ranchers(牧场主) are nervous. Last year, the US Cattlemen's Association asked the government to define ''meat'' as a product ''coming directly from animals.'' That anxiety—and the power of the science driving it—goes to show that this grand shift isn't impossible.
1. According to passage, the author was convinced by the Impossible Burger because__.A.it has a special taste that is different from normal ones. |
B.it contains all non-meat materials that taste like meat. |
C.more vegetables are used as main materials for the burger. |
D.one bite of this burger can provide people with the energy needed for a whole day. |
A.That people think their diet is the best in the world. |
B.That people are unwilling to go against their culture by changing their diets. |
C.That people's preference for food is linked to the food choice available to them. |
D.That people's eating habits are consistently observed and closely connected with their culture. |
A.Fake meat will not be necessarily stored in a refrigerator. |
B.The price of fake meat will be just one-fourth of traditional meat's. |
C.Fake meat will win over older people thanks to its tender and soft taste. |
D.Fake meat will own a taste that is not found in traditional meat. |
A.Meat must come from animals. |
B.The world will probably embrace the idea of fake meat. |
C.The ranchers are suffering economic loss due to fake meat. |
D.The definition of meat has been changed because of fake meat. |

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday that it used a helicopter to collect US balloonist Jonathan Trappe from the remote area where he landed a night earlier.
“It’s not the destination I set out for, but it’s kind of the way with real adventure. Adventure isn’t what you planned on, it’s what you find, and that’s what we have today,’’he told the CBC.
Trappe landed safely near York Harbour after reporting that he was having trouble controlling his balloons Thursday evening, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Instead of using a conventional hot-air balloon, Trappe was using more than 300 colorful helium-filled balloons, like those used in the animated movie”Up “.
He lifted off on Thursday morning from Caribou, Maine,in hopes of becoming the first person to cross the Atlantic using a bunch of helium balloons. But he ran into trouble as he approached Newfoundland and was in communication with a search and rescue center in Halifax; Nova Scotia, said Lt. Steve Henley of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Stephenville. The balloonist's movements were tracked by radar by Canadian officials, he said.
He told CBC that his calculations indicated he wasn’t going to make it to Europe so he decided to set down on land before crossing over open ocean, where a water landing would have been more dangerous. He said the landing had its hairy moments because he was coming in fast.
“We set out on this expedition for the adventure, and we got the adventure.”Trappe said.
Trappe will likely have to meet with Canada Border Service Agency before being allowed to return to the U. S. , officials said.
The North Carolina native said he'd worked on the trans-Atlantic crossing for two years, and there was no stranger to use bunches of balloons. He’d once used them to lift a artifcial house, as in the Disney-Pixar movie, and he’d used them to cross the English Channel.
By Thursday afternoon, he was well on his way, heading toward Newfoundland. But a couple of hours later,he ended his adventure. “This doesn’t look like France,’’he posted on Facebook.
1. What can we learn about Jonadian Trappe according to the text?A.It was not until Thursday evening that he was collected by a helicopter. |
B.He was going on the adventure trip with much help of the U. S. departments. |
C.If he had used the hot-air balloon, he would definitely have reached his goal. |
D.Even though he didn’t achieve success, he thought it was a worthy adventure. |
A.he got reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp |
B.he was inspired by his favorite stars in the Disney-Pixar movie |
C.he'd like to be the first to cross the Atlantic in a helium-balloon |
D.he’d like to be well-known for a balloon flight across the world |
A.Discouraging. | B.Frightening. |
C.Having hair. | D.Made of hair. |

As a manager from IBM, my father’s job filled his day, his thought, his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I had fun under the Eiffel Tower. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.
My father sees me travelling without a purpose, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down (安定下来), but now I want him to explore the world.
He agrees and we meet four weeks later in Rapid City.
“What is our first stop?” asks my father.
“What time is it?”
“Still don’t have a watch?”
Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he looks up at sculptures of the four Presidents in granite(花岗岩), his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of little boy.
“Amazing,” he says, “How was this done?”
A film in the information center shows sculptor(雕塑家) Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculptures.
We look up and I ask myself, “Can I devote my life to anything?”
No directions, no purpose. I always used to hear those words in my father’s voice. Now I hear them in my own.
The next day we’re at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.
“Did you ever travel with your dad?” I ask.
“Only once,” he says. “I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other---but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”
The last sentence---it’s probably the same thing I will say about my father. And what I want my child to say about me.
In Glacier National Park, my father says, “I’ve never seen water so blue.” I have, in several places of the world. I can keep traveling. I realize--- and maybe a fixed job won’t be as boring as I think.
Weeks after our trip, I call my father. “The photos from the trip are wonderful,” he says. “We have got to take another trip like that sometime.” I tell him I’ve decided to settle down and find a fixed job, and I’m wearing a watch.
