How to plan your routes to avoid busy places
Whether you are a beginner or already a regular runner, these apps will come in handy for planning routes that avoid busy places on your next run.
Strava
Just put in whether you’re running or cycling, how far you’d like to go and whether you’re keen to avoid hills, the app will then suggest a number of routes near you, based on where other runners have been. It is a good way to see running routes you might not have explored.
Komoot
As you plan the route, it’ll work out the distance of your run and give you the option to input your running speed, allowing the app to work out how long the route shall take you.
Map my run
Map my run gives runners the option to plan their own route, or the ability to search through popular running routes near you, which is even more helpful for beginners. The app gives you the option of saving your favourite routes and accessing them on the app if you get lost mid-run.
OS Maps
Another hugely popular map-building platform, OS Maps is pretty high tech when it comes to planning a running route. You’ll need a subscription to get some of the features, but using the free app you can find local running routes. There are almost two million routes stored in the routes database, and many of them are free.

Using cells that they took from wagyu cows, the Japanese scientists set out to create a structure with the special feature seen in wagyu beef that makes it different from other cuts of beef. By isolating beef cells, the scientists organized how muscles, fat and other cells should be placed. The researchers then shaped these tissues (组织) into the form of a steak using a technique called 3D bioprinting (生物打印), where cell structures can be made to look like real tissues in living things. The researchers believe that the development could be a big step toward a sustainable future. Its origins from real meat also make it different from plant-based options.
“By improving this technology, it will be possible to not only reproduce complex meat structures, but also make small adjustments to the fat and muscle components,” Michiya Matsusaki, one of the project’s researchers, said excitedly in a statement. Michiya added that with these adjustments, more customers might one day be able to order a cultured cut of meat with the amount of fat they like, tailor-made to their tastes and health concerns.
Wagyu beef is known to be extremely expensive, with high-grade wagyu fetching prices of up to $200 per pound and adult cows selling for more than $30, 000. In 2019, Japan’s wagyu exports ranked in a record high of $268.8 million in profits, up 20% from 2018.
While this might be the first cut of wagyu beef ever to be 3D-printed, other attempts have been made to bio-print steaks. In February this year, Aleph Farms and the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the Israel Institute of Technology jointly bio-printed and cultivated a rib eye steak using real cow cells.

Handling the varied power production of renewables will require cheap storage for hours or even days at a time. New types of iron-based batteries might be up to the task.
Many firms are engaged in developing these kinds of batteries. Oregon- based ESS,whose batteries can store energy for between four and twelve hours, launched its first network-scale projects in 2021.Massachusetts-based Form Energy, which raised $ 240 million in 2021,has batteries that store power for up to 100 hours. Its first installation will be a one-megawatt(兆瓦)pilot plant in Minnesota, planned to be completed in 2023.
Both companies rely on batteries that use iron, one of the most abundant materials on the planet. This means that their offerings could eventually be cheaper than other network storage candidates. Form says its batteries could eventually cost just $ 20 per kilowatt-hour,lower than even optimistic predictions for lithium-ion(锂离子)batteries in the next several decades.
There are still challenges to address:iron batteries typically have low efficiency, meaning a good part of the energy that’s put into them can’t be recovered. Unwanted side reactions can also degrade them over time. But if iron-based batteries can be applied widely,at a low enough cost, they could help power more of the world with renewable energy.

There are many ways we could set plastics on a different lifecycle. One that I have been working on is turning plastics into a hardy, reliable and sustainable building material.
Most people believe that plastics recycling is severely limited: only a few types can be recycled at all. This is unsurprising. The proportion(比例)of plastics that are recycled is minimal. But all polymers(聚合物)are, technologically, recyclable. Some of them can be used again and again to produce the same goods. Some can technically be reprocessed into new materials for different applications.
The problem is that recycling much of this plastic waste is currently unprofitable. But the amount of these materials all over the world is large and keeps on growing. What if this plastic waste could be used to produce something useful to the society? Many universities and business people are attempting to do this. Most solutions target mixed plastic waste and suggest applications different from the original ones. For example, several groups have developed building materials made of plastic waste. Plastics are strong, durable, waterproof, lightweight and recyclable—all key properties for construction materials. So what if all of this plastic waste could be turned into building materials for low-income populations? Existing initiatives are promising, but not yet reproducible on an industrial scale.
I study plastic waste with the aim of finding interesting ways to remove it from the environment. From agricultural waste to concrete waste, mixed with recycled plastics, there are many ways to obtain materials to produce bricks and other useful elements for buildings. So perhaps plastics are not necessarily the problem. They can be part of a pathway towards a more sustainable way of living.
1. What’s people’s common belief about plastic recycling?A.Almost all plastic waste can be reused. | B.The methods are quite limited. |
C.Not many kinds of plastics are recyclable. | D.The amount is unbelievably large. |
A.Plastic waste is on the decline globally. |
B.Recycling plastics doesn’t make money now. |
C.Plastic buildings have been largely constructed. |
D.New applications of plastics haven’t been found. |
A.They can resist water and won’t last long. |
B.They can be reproduced in large quantity. |
C.They satisfy the needs of low-income people. |
D.They meet most demands of building materials. |
A.Positive. | B.Anxious. |
C.Doubtful. | D.Critical. |

Like every other human biometric identification system(生物标识系统)before it, such as fingerprints and retina scans, there are still significant.security bugs in some of the most advanced identity verification(证实)technology. Brigham Young University electrical and computer engineering Professor D.J.Lee has decided there is a better and more secure way to use your face for restricted access.
It's called Concurrent Two-Factor Identity Verification (C2FIV) and it requires both one’s facial identity and a specific facial motion to gain access. To set it up,a user faces a camera and records a short 1-2 second video of either a unique facial motion or a lip movement from reading a secret phrase. The video is then input into the device, which obtains facial features and the features of the facial motion, storing them for later ID verification.
To get technical, C2FIV relies on an integrated neural network framework to learn facial features and actions at the same time.Using this integrated neural network framework, the user’s facial features and movements are embedded(嵌入)and stored on a server or in an embedded device and when they later attempt to gain access, the computer compares the newly generated embedding to the stored one. That user's ID is verified if the new and stored embeddings match at a certain level.
Lee said C2FIV has broader application, including accessing restricted areas at a workplace, online banking,ATM use, safe deposit box access or even hotel room entry or keyless access to your vehicle."How great would it be to know that even if you lost your car key, no one can steal your vehicle because they don't know your secret facial action?"

The only two people who came from my previous school were two girls, Donna Davis and Sakjinda Rai, but I developed little friendship with them.At first I was scared (害怕的) and looked stupid. But after a few months, I tried keeping my arms open and making friends with people around me.
After an unsuccessful relationship with Amit Sharmar, who ran away from me whenever I said hello to him, Sher Bhachu joined me, and we seemed to have a bit in common. So I made my first friend, and I wasn't on my own any more! But after a few days,he broke his leg, and was off for a couple of months! I was on my own again!
Anyway, when Sher finally did return, I introduced him to another friend of mine,Graeme Parker. They got on like a house on fire, but unfortunately that little threesome (三人一组) only managed to last about a week or two before they had a bit of fight, and poor Graeme went his own way.
