3 Things That Can Happen When You Quit Social Media

Social media brings you much fun. But if you’re spending too much time on social media, it can be hard to imagine life without it.     1    Here are some things to expect when you do that.

You’ll get more work done, and you’ll do it faster.     2    When you click back and forth between Facebook and an important project, your work time may be lengthened by as much as 40 percent. That's a high price to pay for a few likes and comments.

3    As social media has become easy to access, we often feel forced to pay attention to what is happening on our news-feeds anywhere and at any time. The desire to be constantly aware of what’s going on online leads to an increase in cortisol, the stress hormone (压力荷尔蒙).     4    Staying away from social media makes you less affected by cortisol, leaving you calmer and more focused.

You’ll sit less. Sitting all day can be as dangerous for your health as smoking. And after a long day at work, we are increasingly using our free time to check social media — from a seated position. People will say, “Wow, I didn’t realize I was sitting an extra 90 minutes each day because of Facebook”.     5

A.You’ll get more sleep.
B.You’ll feel less stressed.
C.Without social media, you’ll have more creative ideas.
D.This can bring unfavorable effects on the brain like reduced memory.
E.Staying away from social media frees up your time for healthier activities.
F.However, there are many reasons to consider taking a break from social media.
G.Putting aside social media, you’ll find your productivity levels increase a lot.

【推荐1】Why You Won’t Apologize

In our relationships with others, it’s inevitable that we’ll hurt people from time to time, even though, in some cases, we don’t mean to.     1     Research shows what those with high levels of social intelligence already know — sincere apologies are usually very effective at mending relationships that have been damaged by thoughtless acts. But all too often, we stubbornly refuse to apologize, even when we know we’re in the wrong.

An apology is an attempt to repair the damage we’ve done to a relationship. To do this,we need to imagine ourselves to be in the victim’s position and to show empathy (共情) for the pain we have caused the victim. Some researches have indicated that people with the personality of narcissism (自恋) generally see no need to apologize when they have wronged another person.     2     When our friend points out that we’ve offended them, it’s easy to recall plenty of instances when they’d also hurt our feelings—so what are they getting so upset about?

We all want to believe we’re essentially good people. Accepting the fact that we’ve hurt someone we care about conflicts with our precious self-image. People who believe that personality is fixed are especially easily affected by the idea that an act of apology is a threat to their self-image. If personal characteristics stay the same, then, of course, hurting someone they care about is inconsistent (不一致) with their self-image as an essentially good person. In reality, of course, even good people sometimes do bad things.     3

Sometimes people don’t apologize because they don’t believe it will do any good. This could come from the belief that some mistakes are unforgivable.     4     Your sincere apology doesn’t mean the victim ought to forgive you right away. It may still take time, but at least the act of making an apology gets the process of forgiveness started.

A.However, it’s quite difficult to make a sincere apology.
B.The challenge then is finding a way to make things right again.
C.There may also be unrealistic expectations about the process of forgiveness.
D.But even for most normal people, it can be extremely difficult to feel sorry for those who have been offended.
E.Understanding and accepting this fact of life can help ease our mind and thus help make an effective apology.
F.Although apologizing can be hard to do, it is, in fact, the most effective approach to mending a broken relationship.

【推荐2】In an incredible display of compassion and kindness, a man from Turkey was spotted trying to warm a pigeon in the most creative way.

Sabahattin Yılmaz was at home one chilly day. After a rain shower had passed, he noticed something landed on the sill (窗台) outside his window—a cold and wet pigeon. The animal was trembling and soaked; it clearly didn’t have the chance to seek shelter before the rain began. Feeling for the poor pigeon, Yılmaz thought of a way to dry him off.

Rather than pick him up and take him inside to warm up, Yılmaz plugged in a hairdryer and used it to dry off the bird. Little did he know that his neighbor captured the whole moment on video. In the video, Yılmaz can be seen leaning out of his window. He was stretching his arm as far as he can so the hot air can reach the pigeon. The bird willingly let the man warm him up, crouching (蹲伏) to let his outer feathers dry.

Yılmaz told the media that he spent about fifteen minutes drying off the bird. He said he had just opened his window when he saw the pigeon around the corner of the sill. He described it as wet and “about to freeze” from the cold and rainy weather.

After fifteen minutes, Yılmaz gave the pigeon birdseed, which he ate happily. However, the bird remained wet still. “I saw that it was still there so I warmed it up again, after the pigeon recovered again, and after eating a good amount of seed, it flew away,” Yılmaz recalled.

He also didn’t know that he was being recorded at the time and that the video was shared online. He simply did it out of the kindness of his heart. “The pigeon is a living creature and deserved to continue living, that is why I did it,” he said.

【推荐3】How to Give Feedback(反馈) That People Will Listen to

If we want to grow as people, we can’t just rely on our own evaluation of how we’re doing.    1    Receiving feedback from others can help us see the bigger picture and show us a path forward to success. However, someone has to give that feedback, and sometimes, that someone will be you. How should you approach this?

2    If you wait until the matter fades from the person’s mind, they might no understand what you’re trying to tell them. Feedback should be clear and well timed, or it’s likely to be ignored.

When you’re giving feedback, it’s important to keep in mind that no one likes to be told they’re doing a bad job. Make sure you give an equal amount to positive feedback to balance out anything negative.    3

All good feedback shares a few key elements. First, it should help accomplish a specific goal. It’s less useful to tell your friend that their dish tastes “interesting”' than it is to suggest adding a little salt to improve the flavor.

Feedback should also look toward the future.    4    Tell your friend they should take more notes in class instead of talking about how they should have studied harder for the big biology exam they failed.

Finally, don’t assume your suggestion is the only correct way to deal with a situation. Consider other points of view and keep your ego(自我)under control. You might even end up with some feedback on your feedback.    5

A.Use actual facts to support the point you are making.
B.We also need to know what other people think about our performance.
C.Like the saying goes, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.”
D.Don’t take it personally -- it can only help you give better advice next time.
E.The point of giving feedback is to motivate the other person to perform better.
F.You can’t change what’s already happened, but you can prevent it from happening again.
G.If you spot a situation in which sonic feedback would be helpful, give it as soon as you can.
