This month, the Jack Singer Concert Hall will invite audiences into the underwater world of legendary photographer Brian Skerry and producer James Cameron in National Geographic Film Concert: Secrets of the Whales on May 26-28. With none other than Jann Arden, celebrated musician, actor and author, as a guest commentator guiding audiences into the complex and fascinating families, culture, and play that reveal the secret lives of whales, the whole experience is brought to life by a full orchestra (管弦乐队) and world-class conductor Anthony Parnther.
Called “visually appealing” by The New York Times, this concert presentation brings the most powerful moments of the Emmy-winning Disney+ series together, transporting audiences into the lives of five different whale families as they adapt to ecological changes to their habitats.
“Secrets of the Whales was the most ambitious project of my career as a photographer. If we could see the ocean and our planet through the lens (镜头) of the culture of another species, that could change our view of the natural world and our relation to it,” says Skerry. “Those connections, the communities and the cultures the whales share all mirror human culture, but sometimes we forget about that.”
Brian Skerry has spent nearly four decades exploring and documenting the world’s oceans. He spent more than three years in 24 locations shooting footage for the four-part series Secrets of the Whales. Now, with the most powerful moments selected, the documentary has been edited for this live, two-hour concert performance. Projected on a high-definition screen, the rich filmography and sweeping score is brought to life by a 40-piece orchestra. Keeping Kids Calm
Purrble comes to the rescue for anxious kids. This toy has seven sensors. They respond to touch. Purrble’s heartbeat speeds up when you play with the toy. Then you comfort Purrble by petting it. This slows its heartbeat down. It calms you too. In a study of 20 families, 19 parents said that Purrble helped their kids calm down.
Listen to this
MobiWAN helps you communicate by directing calls through your head. The headset speaker and microphone, created by Mobilus Labs, use bone-conduction technology. Sound vibrations(振动) are sent through the wearer’s skull(头骨). This lets workers stay in touch in noisy places, such as a construction site or a ship in a storm.
Read to me
Reading is a challenge for millions of people. They may struggle with poor eyesight, dyslexia, or other issues. But with computer vision and artificial intelligence, the OrCam Read can read any piece of text aloud. The OrCam Read can also read text in multiple languages.
Helping hand
The Mega Cyborg Hand kit was created by Thames & Kosmos. It helps kids build a robotic hand that copies the movements of a real hand. The device is made up of plastic pieces and tubes filled with water. Once assembled(组装) and slipped on, it passes force from the user’s fingers to the fingers of the robotic hand. The Mega Cyborg Hand can be adjusted to fit arms of almost any size. It easily switches from left-handed to right-handed to “claw.”

What is it all about?
It’s called the Mosquitron—a new mosquito catcher or killer. It’s very easy to control and it can protect your home from all the mosquitos!
How does it work?
Instead of trying to keep the mosquitos away, it attracts them, then catches them and finally kills them! Basically, it will attract the mosquitos into the Mosquitron, with a completely harmless UV-PT producing light. Next to the UV-PT light is a powerful reverse (反向的)fan that sucks(吸) the mosquitos through a one way trapdoor. Once they are trapped in the drying basket, they are dried to death by the fan in 2 minutes.
How much does it cost?
You’d be surprised to find that you can get it right now for just $89. It might seem ex-pensive at first. However, when you compare it with other products which need regular, ex-pensive repair and don’t work for more than 10 minutes, it is pretty cheap. In fact, some products using the same UV technology are priced over $250!
How to buy Mosquitron?
That’s very easy. You can only buy it from the supplier’s website.
1. Why should we stay away from mosquitos according to the text?A.They produce much noise. | B.They can cause serious diseases. |
C.They pollute the environment. | D.They can make dangerous chemicals. |
A.By watering them in a basket. | B.By attracting and killing them. |
C.By burying them with hot sand. | D.By giving off strong and harmful light. |
A.In restaurant. | B.In a computer store. | C.On the website. | D.In a supermarket. |

This year, the dry conditions in the Mekong region happened due to warm Pacific Ocean-currents (洋流) known as the El Nino effect. But climate change is also a driving factor, experts say, causing the monsoon (季风) season to shorten sharply. The situation was made worse by water dam operators upstream, withholding water for their own purposes.
Many rice farmers in the area have been unable to plant their main crop, raising fears of a heavily decreased harvest this fall. Less water flow could also have a bad influence on fish reproduction in the Mekong River basin. This is normally the time when fish use rising water levels to reproduce their young, but there is little sign of this happening so far this year.
Perhaps even more alarming, experts expect that droughts and damage to the water flow of the Mekong will become more common, and they warn that it could eventually destroy the entire ecosystem.
Starting from the Tibetan highlands, the Mekong River flows through six Asian countries, including China, Myanmar, Thaland, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, before emptying into the South China Sea. The river basin is home to the largest inland fishery in the world and more than 60 million people depend on it to make a living.
Few rivers in the world rise and fall with the seasons as much as the Mekong, which can drop up to 40 feet in some places at the end of the dry season. When the monsoon rains arrive, they normally produce a flood that brings with it sediments (沉积物) to agriculture as well as enormous amounts of larvae (幼虫) and tiny fish, including many endangered species, such as the Mekong giant catfish, that are swept into the Tonle Sap Lake where they can grow.
1. How many reasons are there for the drought of Mekong River this year?A.One | B.Two |

At your side is a “happiness guide,” one of a small group of Finns employed by a national tourism agency to teach international visitors something about why the Scandinavian country ranks at the top of a report ranking nations on happiness.
“One of the uniquely Finnish experiences which contributes to our well-being is our special relationship with nature, especially our forests,” says Hetta Huittinen, a spokesperson for Business Finland, which started Rent A Finn, a new contest that will bring travelers to Finland this summer for a free trip with a Finnish guide.
In Finnish law, the public has the right to wander; in natural areas, even on privately owned land, it’s legal for anyone to make temporary use of the land. You’re allowed to go anywhere and pick berries and mushrooms or whatever you find there, or even stay overnight in a tent without asking permission. Most Finns also spend long time outside in the summer as they rent or borrow cottages in the countryside; the law requires a minimum of five weeks of annual leave.
“People actually are both happier and healthier when they see trees, when they’re walking to work,” said John Helliwell, one of the authors of the World Happiness Report, adding that the slow pace of walking and connecting with others also has a benefit. When I first tried to contact someone for this article, he couldn’t talk because he was headed to the sauna.
It might be difficult for visitors to collect much wisdom from a two-or three-day trip, but Business Finland hopes that the winners chosen to travel will learn something by diving into nature with a Finn.

There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago.The following are three of the most common.
Myth Number One:It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident.
Truth:Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear”is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you’ll have traveled through a windshield(挡风玻璃) or door to do it.Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are “thrown clear”.
Myth Number Two:Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.
Truth:Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(无知觉的) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents.People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situation, not to be trapped in them.
Myth Number Three:Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour(mph).
Truth:When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other,an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving head first into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

I’ ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time, which is terrible. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have some friends who ended up in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. White wouldn’t let that happen.
Mr. White worked long time, making sure I did my work. With him company my grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.
Mr. White was selected as Disney’s 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names, Mr. White said, “You’re all going.”
On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn’t want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in contact. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a bestselling book based on his classroom rules, The Essential 55. In 2003, Mr. White took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit orphanages. It was the most amazing experience of my life. It’s now my dream to one day start a group of women’s clubs, helping people from all backgrounds.

【推荐3】When I watched the film “The Farewell” recently, I found it not only reminded me of my own family’s great lie, but it also reopened old wounds.
Its main characters tell lies that flow from their mouths smoothly. Billi, a Chinese-American artist in New York, and her grandmother in China, tell lies to each other on the phone. Billi, in cold wind, tells her grandma that she’s wearing a hat. She’s not. Her grandma says she’s visiting her sister, while she’s actually ill in hospital. They’re lying to avoid worrying each other, but in fact the grandma has lung cancer. The family know it but won’t tell her for fear that anxiety over the diagnosis (诊断) could kill her before the cancer.
When I was a teenager girl, my parents, both immigrants, got divorced. We never had a discussion about how things would change. We didn’t tell anyone. Instead, we pretended as if nothing had happened. My father did not run away; he slept in a separate room. In the presence of relatives, we acted as a close family. I was puzzled why we insisted on creating the illusion(假象) that everything was O.K..
I asked a professor of multicultural psychology. “Asians tend to have indirect communication,” he said, “In indirect communication, what’s not said is more important than what is said. Eastern philosophy emphasizes balance and harmony, and indirect communication minimizes conflict. So some Asian cultures value the ability to understand indirect messages.”
In the film, the family members show their love for grandma by keeping secret about her condition. Similarly, perhaps my parents intended to save face and preserve harmony. As an Asian-American, maybe all I’ll ever have is a secondhand understanding, and that’s the best I can do.
1. Why does Billi’s grandma tell lies to her according to Paragraph 2?A.Because she’s afraid of the diagnosis. |
B.Because she knows she has lung cancer. |
C.Because she doesn’t want Billi to worry. |
D.Because she has been used to telling lies. |
A.They left their home. | B.They kept secret in public. |
C.They had a discussion. | D.They asked relatives for help. |
A.Confused. | B.Skeptical. |
C.Unconcerned. | D.Annoyed. |
A.Severe conflicts. | B.Ability of showing love. |
C.Balance and harmony. | D.Direct communication. |
