【推荐2】The killdeer, a small bird known for its high-pitched ( 声调高的) call, could lead to the cancellation of one of Canada's biggest music festivals.
The first hint of trouble for Ottawa's Bluesfest, an outdoor festival that draws around 300, 300 people each year, came last week after workers at the site found one of the birds. It had laid four eggs nearby, effectively claiming the main stage area as its nesting ground. “This is one of the most challenging problems we're been presented with, but we feel we can work through this, said Mark Monahan, executive director of the festival. "Anything that changes the schedule has a major effect, so we're taking it very seriously. "
The discovery meant that government officials rushed to protect the nest and the eggs, hiring a security guard to watch over them 24 hours a clay. Environmentalists were also brought in. "We don't know when the eggs might hatch, “said Monahan. What is known is that the young killdeer will likely leave the nest soon after they are hatched, leading many to hope that the eggs hatch in the next day or so.
The festival is now asking permission from Environment Canada to relocate the nest some 50 meters away or take it to a wildlife center. Moving the nest would also ensure the bird and its young would be protected during the festival’s 11 - day run, said Monahan. It’s highly likely that the festival thousands of attendees would cause huge problems for the bird and its eggs. Monahan was confident that the festival would go on as planned, however. ‘‘ Most of the people we’re working with …are looking for a positive solution," Monahan said. “There is no one saying that the festival can't go on. "
As news of the dilemma spread, it left residents divided. Some supported the bird, saying that moving the nest might result in the eggs being abandoned. Others expressed annoyance that protecting the eggs of the small bird, which is widespread across North America, was risking an annual festival that contributes millions of dollars to the local economy.
The killdeer's tendency to build its nest in open fields or flat areas has caused issues in other areas of the US: earlier this year, construction on a health center in Wisconsin was temporarily stopped after a killdeer and its four eggs were discovered.

【推荐3】It’s really true what people say about English politeness: it’s everywhere. When squeezing(挤) past someone or passing through a crowd in a narrow place, people say “sorry”. When getting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you” rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things. After all, squeezing past others is sometimes unavoidable(不可避免的), and the bus driver is only doing his job. I used to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started traveling to the British Isles and came to appreciate(欣赏) some more polite ways of communicating with people, and here are some more polite ways of interacting with people in UK.
People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and shop assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be surprising to hear more than one thank you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, which is different from Germans, who would normally think that paying their workers money is already enough.
Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize(批评) others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers repeated several times but none of their explanations were intended as scolding me. It has been my impression that by avoiding scolding, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is showed in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat(请客) women to a meal than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies(适用于) to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men! Yes, the latter are a bit mean(吝啬的).
1. What is the author’s feeling of English politeness?A.He thinks highly of it. | B.He thinks little of it. |
C.He thinks it is unnecessary. | D.He thinks it goes too far. |
A.British men never treat a woman to dinner. |
B.British men think it’s unnecessary to say “thank you” to the bus driver. |
C.In Germany, employers often say “thank you” to employees for their job. |
D.Germans think it is unnecessary to thank workers because payment is enough. |
A.like to fight with each other | B.treat women more politely than English men |
C.are as generous as English men | D.are unwilling to spend money for women |
A.telling stories | B.making comparisons (对比) |
C.giving reasons | D.doing scientific research (调查) |
【推荐1】In our everyday lives and in our personal and professional pursuits, one of the best personal growth keys you and I should pursue is a healthy amount of self-awareness. Put simply, without self-awareness, we are tricking ourselves into living out life through the imagination of reality instead of reality. On the contrary, when we’re not tricking ourselves, we are putting ourselves in a position to grow and succeed.
Fundamentally, the more you know about yourself, the better you are at adapting to change, growing healthily. So, how do you become self-aware? One of the most effective ways is to invite honest feedback into your life. I grew up in a generation in which everyone got a prize just for showing up. And while I am an enormous supporter of encouragement, false feedback only masks blind spots in a person’s character. Worse yet, a sustained “everyone gets a prize” culture supports mediocrity. Of course, on one likes hard conversations, but I’d like to advocate developing the maturity of character to get real self-awareness, and keep us sharp and effective as we meet the challenges of everyday life.
Yet amid all this, there’s one more key ingredient for self-awareness, and that’s applied self-knowledge. Imagine texting while driving. Being a slave to the ping of the latest message, you take your focus off the road in order to glance at your phone. A few seconds later, your eyes back on the road, you’re dangerously driving into the opposite way. Our self-awareness can tell us, “I mustn’t text while driving.”When we can understand the motivations behind our thoughts and actions, followed by our action plan to conduct our accompanying behavior, we’ll be better experiencing lasting growth. Self-awareness is not undervaluing ourselves; nor is it self-consciousness. Instead, self-awareness will keep us focused on what matters most and keep us away from those things that will distract us from our purpose, allowing us to be aware of our blind spots.
We can read all the self-help guides and personal growth strategies that money can buy, but if we don’t know ourselves well enough to put any of it into effective, specific practice, we’ll never arrive at the greatest place of success possible in this short life. And that is simply, yet powerfully, becoming the version of who we were meant to be.
1. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?A.We all tend to cheat others. |
B.We all tend to live in our dreams. |
C.Self-awareness helps us understand our surroundings better. |
D.Self-awareness helps us become a better version of ourselves. |
A.Try our best to develop our ability. |
B.Keep active, optimistic and friendly. |
C.Face authentic comments in a positive manner. |
D.Accept the encouraging words from others pleasantly. |
A.the danger of managing two things at once | B.the importance of making an action plan |
C.the benefit that self-awareness may bring | D.the skill of using self-awareness in the real life |
A.How to Take Negative Feedback? | B.How to Develop a Mature Personality? |
C.Unlocking the Power of Self-awareness | D.Self-awareness Begins WithSelf-knowledge |

【推荐3】English learners should not think that mistakes are bad. Alex Poole, a professor of English at Western Kentucky University, advises that language learners should instead see errors as signs of progress. One common problem is that English learners think too much about errors instead of communication. "The goal is to be able to communicate in practical terms. If you have an error, the only time you should worry about it is when it leads to misunderstanding," Poole said.
Poole said when speaking with a native English speaker, you can look for signs of confusion to detect errors. For example, when a person gives an unusual response to something you said, you can then ask them directly what the problem is. It also works if you ask a native speaker about the kinds of things that you say that could cause communication problems if you know him well.
When it comes to writing, Poole recommends thinking about errors in a different way. He suggests keeping a list of common errors. When English learners write something, instead of grammars, they should think about the big picture of what they are writing about. Then he advises thinking about how to put those ideas in order. After finishing it, you can go back and use your list to look for errors.
“My philosophy as a language learner has always been. .I'm going to monitor my errors, but I'm never going to be perfect, so that shouldn't bother me. But I should look for things which cause communication problems, and I just have to live with that."
You can read more about errors in Poole's new book Learning a Foreign Language-Understanding the Fundamentals of Linguistics. In the book, he also writes about study plans, progress and other issues in language learning.
