Four people are talking about their problems when studying English.

I am Denver. I work 50 hours a week as a taxi driver, so I talk to people all day. They understand me, but I often make a lot of mistakes. No one corrects me. My vocabulary is strong. Grammar is my problem. I’m trying to change little by little. For example. I don’t use the past tense. I always say. "I drive him to the office this morning “instead of” I drove him to the office this morning.”

My name is Maria Luisa. I’m teaching myself English. but I’m not good at grammar. Besides, I find it’s really difficult to find ways to practice English. I live in an area where everyone speaks my language. My neighbors and friends speak Spanish. I can speak Spanish in the supermarket and at the post office.

I am Wang Ling. I understand the grammar and the readings in my class and I think my writing is good, but I’m very nervous when I speak English. I don’t want to make any mistakes because I’m afraid people will think that I’m stupid. Also, my pronunciation isn’t good. When I speak, people often say, “What? Say that again”.

I am Yoshi. I have been in the United States for one year. I’m studying hard and I know grammar well, but the vocabulary is very difficult. When I listen, I don’t understand many of the words. When I try to read, there are three or four new words in every sentence. I feel discouraged.

【推荐1】I am often asked how I learned to speak, read and write Chinese. The short answer, in my case, was a combination of good fortune and hard work.

1    . I have a particularly visual memory — very helpful for characters. Another big part of the good fortune is how early I started Chinese. All students in Australia are required to study a foreign language from Grade 7. The options at my school were Japanese, German, and Chinese. My mother had studied German in school. My sisters were studying Japanese in their primary school.     2    .

The first year was fun, but then our teacher moved to China and the replacement was ill-equipped for the task. The next year my family moved to the US. For the next two years I studied Chinese with a tutor who came to my home. She was my first native Chinese speaking teacher. She had been living in the US for over a decade. We got along well and I have many fond memories of our lessons.     3

Back in Australia to start Grade 11, my new school was chosen partly because it offered advanced Chinese classes.     4    . I fell in love with China for no real reason. Something about the place just attracted me.

By the time I arrived in Beijing in February 2014, I could already read and write Chinese pretty well.

5    ! Instead of grasping for ways to translate my English thoughts, I began to understand how to form Chinese thoughts.

A.So I chose Chinese
B.I nearly decided to give up Chinese
C.She told me many interesting stories about living in the US
D.Grammar patterns I had been using for years suddenly made sense
E.In Grade 12 I had an opportunity to travel to China with a school trip
F.I seriously doubt whether I would have continued Chinese without her influence
G.Part of the good fortune is that I have a brain that seems built for language study

【推荐2】I am Canadian, so I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But my entire experience with the language was in the classroom. All of that changed, however, during my last summer of high school. At age 17, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I was headed to Quebec to live in the province(省)with a French-speaking host family. I would learn French at a local college.

When I arrived, I met my host family. They didn't speak any English. Though nervous, I introduced myself as best I could.

On the first day of school, all of us students were given a test to determine our language level. We also signed a contract promising to speak only French all summer. This even included times we communicated with our other English-speaking classmates.

The struggle to communicate in a second language was harsh but exhilarating. I made a lot of new friends, ordered food from restaurants and even saw a movie in French. I didn't understand most of it, but I loved the whole amazing experience.

On the weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different locations around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St. Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see giant whales swimming around our boat.

The most memorable part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City. I walked along the cobblestone (鹅卵石) streets and took pictures of the European-style buildings, and I learned about an important battle that took place nearby. I also got to enjoy a “beaver tail”-a special local food. It was truly an Eastern Canadian treat!

By the end of summer, I was communicating pretty fluently. I couldn't wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being fully immersed (沉浸) in a French-speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. At the time, I had no idea that I'd end up living abroad for more than 10 years. I'll never forget that first experience that paved the way for my future adventures.

1. What left the author the deepest impression?
A.Visiting historic Quebec City.B.Speaking French with classmates.
C.Introducing herself to the host family.D.Watching whales on the St. Lawrence River.
2. The word “exhilarating” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A.ironicB.pleasantC.dramaticD.embarrassing
3. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.My First Experience with a Host Family
B.My Struggle to Learn a Foreign Language
C.An Unforgettable Learning Experience Abroad
D.A Foreign Language Experience in My Own Country

【推荐3】I just counted how many foreign languages I've studied so far in my life and it's been twelve!

I always follow my interests and I like to read blogs(博客)in other languages.    1    . Bloggers tend to write the same way they speak, so I don't have to worry much about adopting strange terms that are only used in writing.

Movies are also a really good tool, especially if you can find subtitles(字幕)in the language you're learning.    2    ,they will still keep your brain listening and reading in the same language. Music is another way to start listening in your new language. Games are of course also an excellent way of studying a new language. A lot of language learning computer programs include games. I'm super competitive and if I play any of them. I can be hooked for hours.    3

However, the hardest bit for me is when I'm comfortable enough with a language to understand most things and make myself understood. I'm actually stuck at this stage in Norwegian,    4     Ideally I should sign up to take a big language exam. Each time I start getting self-satisfied, it's time to take a new course or take up some sort of challenge that will require me to level up my skills.

5    The best language class I've ever taken was my beginner's Russian course at university where my professor never used any English. It got to the point where I would kind of just forget about English while in Russian class, which helped me to really immerse myself in the Russian language and do a whole lot with the limited Russian I had.

A.That's really uncomfortable.
B.Whatever languages they're translated into.
C.I also try to think in the language I'm learning.
D.It's time well spent if I'm learning the language.
E.Computer games always make me feel worn out.
F.Though they don't always exactly match what's being said,
G.I found them the perfect learning tool for their oral language.
