I was sitting at the dinner table with my mother and step father discussing two different family drama situations when my mom held her breath and her mouth was hanging wide open. She wasn’t speaking so I went and looked on her phone, and it was a friend request on Facebook from my elder sister who we both hadn’t spoken to in four years when all of my sisters got annoyed with my mom because of her lies about their childhood spread by their biological father. They abandoned me too since I was still living with my mom.
I leaned over and hugged my mom over the shoulders and tucked (把……塞入) my head in between her jaw and shoulder as I myself started getting teary eyed. She said, “I don’t want to accept it right away. That would be odd.” And as she finished saying this messenger was ringing and it was my elder sister calling.
They talked for over two hours. And it was the best thing that I heard my sister who I haven’t met or heard from in four years, and my niece and nephew speaking words and full comprehensible sentences. The last time I saw them, they were so little, only one and three years old. Now, four years later, what will they be like? Maybe a lot taller? Maybe getting cuter? I am very excited and happy and looking forward to seeing them soon.
I told my mom after the phone call was done that I was going to wait for my sister to add me and gave her space. I needed this more than I actually knew.

About a half-mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming.
In late summer, the pond would be covered by a green and bubbly scum(起泡的浮渣). Sometimes a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it. We stayed away.
When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.”
The ice looked solid. No water showed through it, but I hesitated. “Go ahead.” Harry urged. “Try it. You’re lighter than I am. If the ice holds, we can run and slide carefully on it. It’ll be fun.” I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond.
In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack(裂缝)! I stretched out(伸展)my arms. The next thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice by arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures.
I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened. I was wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms stretched out on the ice.
I looked at Harry on shore. He seemed rooted to the spot. “I can’t get out!” I screamed when I caught some breath.

During my school days, whenever I was asked to write an essay (文章) about brave people and their brave deeds, I always focused on heroes in news reports risking their lives to save others. But from that day on, I could write how my mom, in her determined way, saved our elderly neighbor.
The event that stands out in my memory happened one morning when I was only 10 years old. I was doing my homework when I heard raised voices. At first I thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below our flat often became loud, but I soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled. Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When I opened the front door of our flat to have a look outside, a thick cloud of smoke, billowing (汹涌) up from the ground floor, greeted me. It hit me that the motorcycle shop had caught fire.
My mom, who had been working in the kitchen, hurried to the living room. We rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke. We were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Mom stopped and thought for a while. She turned around and headed back the way we came. Puzzled but having no idea what she was doing, I followed her.
It became clear soon that Mom had remembered the Korean lady in her 70s living next door to us whom we called Jane, Mom began banging on the door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around us, I could see many of our neighbors — some still in their pyjamas (睡衣) — running for safety. The thought of fear crossed my mind.
“She must have already run for safety like everyone else! Let’s rush downstairs!” I begged. But Mom refused to give up. “I know Jane’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Jane’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping.

The Birthday Cake
Josie was a girl who loved to bake. She always helped her uncle at his bakery. Mostly she carried ingredients from the refrigerator to the large work table. Sometimes Uncle Dave let Josie stir (搅拌) the cake batter (面糊) with a wooden spoon.
Josie wanted to learn to bake a cake on her own. She asked if Uncle Dave would show her how Her mother’s birthday was only two days away. If Josie made a cake all by herself, it would be a wonderful surprise.
On Saturday morning, Josie arrived at the bakery just as it was closing. The bakery always closed early on the weekend so Uncle Dave could walk his dogs. “Ready, Josie?” Uncle Dave asked “Ready!” Josie answered.
First, Uncle Dave had Josie get all the ingredients (原料) and line them up on the work table. Then he showed her how to measure flour and sugar so that she had the exact right amount. She added these ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Next, Uncle Dave tapped an egg on the side of the bowl to crack it. “Be careful not to get any bits of shell in the bowl,” he said.
Josie tapped her egg very gently on the bowl. It didn’t crack. She tried again, and this time the shell came apart. She pulled the egg apart over the bowl and watched the yellow egg yolk drop into the flour.
Now it was time to stir. “This is fun!” said Josie.
When the batter was ready, Uncle Dave helped Josie pour it into the cake pan. He gave Josie oven mitts (烤箱手套) and showed her how to put the pan in the oven without burning her hands.

It was January 24th. I had finally completed my last radiation treatment. It had been a long journey—eight months in total since my initial diagnosis of breast cancer—and I had been looking forward to this day for a very long time. My husband Casey, who was wearing a pink ribbon on his jacket, was waiting for me in the lobby at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto. As a symbol to raise people’s awareness of breast cancer, the pink ribbon had become a part of our life. On the way back home, we reflected on the past months and discussed what lay ahead for our family.
We arrived home in time to have dinner with our three children—Tyler, elven, Brady, nine, and Eve, six. The kids greeted me with hugs that I think were a little bit tighter and lasted a little bit longer than usual.
We were heading to the skating rink (溜冰场) that night. My son Brady had a hockey game and if his Tiger team won, they would move onto the next round. As a typical Canadian hockey mom, I had always loved going to the rink to watch my kids play. But since my diagnosis, the rink and the Tiger players had come to mean even more to me: it was my happy time in those painful months.
When we arrived at the rink, we were greeted with warm hellos. You could tell it was a big game as there was a large crowd of Tiger parents gathering in the lobby outside the dressing room. About ten minutes before game time, Brady’s coach came out to the lobby and invited all the parents to come into the dressing room.

… There is always tomorrow, and life gives us another opportunity to do things right, but in case I am wrong, and today is all that is left to me, I would love to tell you how much I love you and that I will never forget you. Tomorrow is never guaranteed to anyone, young or old. Today could be the last time to see your loved ones, which is why you mustn’t wait; do it today, in case tomorrow never arrives. I am sure you will be sorry you wasted the opportunity today to give a smile, a hug, a kiss, and that you were too busy to grant them their last wish. Keep your loved ones near you; tell them in their ears and to their faces how much you need them and love them. Love them and treat them well; take your time to tell them “I am sorry”, “forgive me”, “please”, “thank you”, and all those loving words you know! Nobody will know you for your secret thought. Ask the Lord for wisdom and strength to express them. Show your friends and loved ones how important they are to you. … |
