The world of fashion and beauty is rarely related to disabilities, and even though Hollywood has made steps toward greater inclusion and clothing brand Aerie has featured women with disabilities in their advertisements, seeing disabilities in the mainstream is definitely unusual. The reason why these things make headlines is that they’re so rare.
I learned from a very young age that because of my disability, I would never be connected with beauty or charm. I’d spent so long feeling separated from so many parts of society, but Ulta is sending a powerful message with a single photo: It’s time to challenge conventional beauty standards because beauty comes in all forms.
We all want to feel included. When it comes to disabilities, it is so important, especially for children and teens with disabilities. I was well into my 30s when I rolled into a makeup store for the first time. I had no idea what I was doing and felt like entering a new world without a map; I felt like I was out of place, as if I was peeking (偷看;窥视) at a club without being invited. Imagine how my experience would have been different if I had seen a model in a wheelchair, smiling, as if to say, “Welcome. Yes, you belong!”
That message of inclusion was loud and clear for Maren Anderson, a 4-year-old girl who has a rare genetic disease and just started using a wheelchair. The moment she spotted the advertisement was caught on camera by her mom Carolyn Anderson, and quickly spread last month on Facebook. “It’s just really saying that she feels included, and she feels like she identifies with that, and belongs here just like everybody else. So, thank you, Ulta,” said Carolyn Anderson.

On Trend: Green garden
Sustainable gardens have become a big trend in our towns and cities. Joe Swift inspired gardeners with his gold-winning design for the Homebase Teenage Cancer Trust that featured drought-buster (治理) architectural planting.
It could cope with even the driest conditions typically found in places where water is precious. His large pools of water had a cooling effect on people and plants.
On Trend: Space-saving Herbs
The Brewin Dolphin garden designed by Cleve West and Steve Swatton followed the Arts and Craft tradition, showing the beautiful strong lines of neatly beech (山毛榉) among its soft herbs planting. It proved to be a style that has never gone out of fashion.
You don’t need a large garden to have a piece of topiary (树木造型). These evergreens, which can be boxed or grown in pots, are easy to cut into shapes, such as balls, cubes and pyramids.
On Trend: Rhododendrons (杜鹃花) Woodland
Chris Beardshaw’s gold-winning design was packed with rhododendrons woodland bushes. It paid tribute (致敬) to Furzey Gardens in Hampshire, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
Rhododendrons might not be the trendiest choice but they deserve a comeback.
On Trend: Drought Buster
The Herbert Smith garden for WaterAid was inspired by the work of the charity and the transforming power of clean water.
Using water wisely is today’s issue, so invest in water butts (积水桶) to collect rainwater and gather waste water from baths, sinks and washing machines.

Sagamore Hill, Oyster Bay
Walk along the same path that President Theodore Roosevelt walked with his family and guests. Sagamore Hill, now a national park, was once the summer home of the 26th president. The expansive property has a nature path through thick woodlands where hikers can walk over a little bridge over a stream. It’s a short, three-quarter-mile path through oak and tulip trees.
INFO: Open sunrise to sunset daily year-round; free; 516-922-4788.
Blydenburgh County Park, Hauppauge

When you’re at Blydenburgh County Park, go in the north entrance off Route 347, where the main office of the Greenbelt Trail Conference is situated. The office, also the start of the routes, provides information and maps.

Pissing Mare Falls-Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador
Pissing Mare Falls may have a funny sounding name but they' re no joke: in fact, they' re one of the highest waterfalls in Canada. Located in the beautiful Gros Morne National Park, the falls are only accessible by boat tour.
Takakkaw Falls-Yoho National Park, British Columbia
Takakkaw translated from Cree loosely means the "magnificent", and it's a suitable word for the second-highest waterfalls in Canada. After a steep drive up a winding road, these falls are only a short hike from the parking lot along a wheelchair accessible path.
Niagara Falls-Niagara Falls, Ontario
Niagara Falls are the most famous waterfalls in Canada.Actually they are made up of three different falls—the Horseshoe Falls, the most powerful in North America, are the only one located on the Canadian side.Melting glaciers(冰川)formed the falls thousands of years ago and the beautiful green color is due to dissolved salt and finely ground(磨)rock.
Bridal Veil Falls-Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park, British Columbia
Pretty and delicate, the Bridal Veil Falls are located just east of Chilliwack, British Columbia, and really do look like a bride with a beautiful veil( 面 纱 ), with water gently pouring over smooth rock. One stormy morning, Mr. Muir set out alone to study nature. He ordered me to stay behind. But I could not let him go alone, so I followed him into the wild weather. We crossed Taylor Glacier and endless sheet of ice, which was cut by cracks. I was unafraid and sailed over these bottomless holes. Mr. Muir was delighted that he was not crossing them alone.
As dusk fell, we reached an enormous crack that was impossible to jump across. In between the two sides was a U-shaped bridge of ice, so thin that one wrong step would mean dropping to your death. Daylight was disappearing, and gusty winds blew snow into my eyes. I turned to return to camp the way we came. However, Mr. Muir decided to cross the crack. He sat down and rode the narrow U-strip as if it were a horse. Once safe on the other side, he called out to me. But I had never been so terrified before. “I am not good at climbing steep slopes.” I was scared and thought.
Then I looked at Mr. Muir, already across on the safe side. Slowly, I began to cross it. I could feel his eyes on me the entire way. Before I knew it, I made the happiest landing of my life. I ran round and round and jumped up and hugged him. From that day on, we spent every moment together.

Ms Brown received the diagnosis having woken up frightened on her 14th birthday. She was admitted to a hospital in Cambridge in 1989, where she was told that she shouldn’t expect to survive into adulthood.
While being monitored (监护) at the hospital, Ms Brown was looked after by a kind nurse called Debbie Bye. Ms Brown has never forgotten the good care that Ms Bye provided during her time of need. “My prognosis (预断) was very poor,”' Ms Brown said. “I wasn’t expected to live more than five years, but now I’m 42 with three children and there’s not a wheelchair in sight. She might have thought she was doing her job but it went above and beyond that. I remember watching Debbie work and being so inspired by the way that she did things. She showed me that children are children no matter what is wrong with them and she treated us all the same.”
The childhood cancer survivor always wondered what had happened to the nurse over the years, which is why she decided to put a call out on Twitter. Ms Brown tweeted an appeal to find Ms Bye, with her tweet being shared more than 1,000 times. Her action proved successful, as the two women were eventually able to make contact (取得联系) thanks to the power of social media.

That’s how gymnast Morgan Hurd explains it. “Beam is one of those things that are more mental than anything,” she said. “If you can do it on the floor, you can do it on the beam.” That’s the way she is taking as she trains for the delayed Tokyo Olympic Games in the living room of her Delaware home.
First State Gymnastics has been her training site since fifth grade but it is closed because of the coronavirus ( 新冠病毒) pandemic. Hurd has only one piece of gymnastics equipment: a balance beam that is quite close the ground and is roughly half the standard length of 16 feet, 5 inches. But she has no uneven bars (高低杠) in her house. “The hardest thing will be bars just because that feeling can not be replaced, no matter what you do or how strong you are,” Hurd said.
These days, Hurd’s self-directed training includes two workouts daily, three hours in the morning and another two hours in the afternoon, six days a week. She regularly talks to Slava Glazounov, who has been her coach since fifth grade. Hurd is in charge of her practising, such as the stretches and exercises that keep up her strength.
Equally important to Hurd is staying in touch with her teammates on the U.S. national team.
Sunisa Lee is a close friend, who, in April, shared a video of herself in her yard.
