When I was a freshman I joined Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education     1     (社团) at my college. Trying to help injured or sick creatures can be heartbreaking, for     2     (存活) is never certain. However, when it works, it surely b    3     the creatures and us.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Mutton town. She had found a young owl on the ground by a    4    . When I arrived, I saw a 2-to-3-week-old owl. I soon examined the chick and it seemed fine with only     5     (不严重的) injury on its wing. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree. A basket was found. I put some pine branches m    6     with grass into the basket to make this nest comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now what the chick needed was     7     (情感的) company. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. It was i    8     to attract the chick’s parents and encourage our chick to start calling as well.

Much to my r    9    , the homeowner called next day, saying that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and what i    10     me most was an active chick accompanied by its lunch in the nest. The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Daisy had always longed to help    1     species of wildlife. One   day she woke   up and   found a flying carpet by her bed.

Dollywood, in the beautiful Smoky Mountains in the southeastern USA, is one of the most     1    theme parks in the world. Visit the candy shop     6     try the same kind of candy that American southerners     7     150 years ago, or take a ride on the only steam-engine train still working in the southeast USA, You can     8    see beautiful bald eagles in the world’s largest bald eagle preserve. And for those     9     like rides, Dollywood has one of the best old wooden roller coasters, Thunderhead. It is world-famous for having the most length in the smallest space. Come to Dollywood to have fun     10     all about America’s historical southeastern culture!

Imagine mountains wrapped in silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer s    1     the mountains turn bright green with growing rice. During autumn, these same mountains are gold, and in winter they are covered in s    2     of white frost. These are the colours of the Longji Rice Terraces.

These terraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people. R    3     as far as the eye can see, these terraces cover tall mountains, often from the bottom to the very top.

So why did these people go     4     so much trouble to turn the entire mountains into terraces? Firstly, building the terraces meant that they could increase the areas in which they could grow rice. Secondly, the     5     terraces catch the rainwater and prevent the soil from being washed away.

But perhaps what is most significant is the way in which people have worked in     6     with nature to make these terraces and grow rice. The terraces are cleverly designed, with hundreds of waterways that     7     with each other. During the rainy season, it is along these waterways that rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces. The sun heats the water     8     turns it into vapour. This forms clouds from which rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.

Although modern technology could help produce more crops, these terraces still mean a lot to the local people for     9     traditions hold much value. Today, the Longji Rice Terraces attract thousands of visitors who come to admire this great wonder c    10     by people and nature working together.
