Dear Li Hua,

I am glad to share with you some details about my passion for moon exploration.

It started with what I have been told about the moon as a kid but grew stronger with time. As it is known to us, there is rich cultural meaning behind the faithful companion of the earth. In Chinese culture, the moon is often compared to a quiet and elegant lady. Also, it reminds people their family and friends far away.

Human have never stopped exploring the moon. I believe it is of more importance. The development of relevant technology fuels the progress of science, benefit our everyday life. What’s more, I think moon exploration shows an important human feature, that is, curiosity about an unknown, that has brought our species this far.

Do you find that I’ve mentioned above interesting and reasonable?

Yours,

Kate

Copernicus had thought of long and hard about these problems and tried to find an answer. He had collected observation of the stars and used all his mathematical knowledge to explain them. But only his new theory could do that. So between 1510 and 1514 he worked on it, gradual improving his theory until he felt it was complete.

In 1514, he showed it privately to his friends. The changes he made to the old theory was revolutionary. He placed fixed sun at the center of the solar system with the planets going round them and only the moon still going round the earth. He also suggested what the earth was spinning as it went round the sun and this explain changes in the movement of the planets and in the brightness of the stars. His friends were enthusiastic and encouraged him to publish his ideas, so Copernicus was cautious. He did not want to be attacked for the Christian Church, so he only published it as he lay died in 1543.

Today, the once-in-500-years total solar eclipse (日食) took place. Unfortunate, I was ill and couldn’t observe it myself, so I had to watch it on television. I clearly watched the Diamond Ring, Bailey’s Beads (贝利珠) or solar eclipses in other areas. The sun on TV was originally round, what later became a boat, like a dog taking off a big bite of a biscuit. Gradually, the sun became thin than an eyebrow. Suddenly, Bailey’s Beads and the Diamond Ring jump out naughtily. Then, a large black disk obviously hung in the sky, the sky became as black as night. After the while, the sun slowly recovered. Ah ha, the dog couldn’t swallow the biscuit and spat out.
