Buying sunglasses can leave anyone puzzled by choice. But Bose may have stuck the landing in the style department with its new Bose Frames, designed to pump music directly into your ears and work with apps to deliver walking instructions and more.
Bose Frames look better than most smart glasses already around. The Frames are black, with gold accents on the power button. Those thick arms look like a pair of designer sunglasses you'd get from some pop shops guaranteed to be out of business in a year. More than one person commented on the Frames while I wore them around town, and two of my co-workers thought they looked surprisingly cool. And that was before they knew about the built-it speakers.
The Frames sound as great as they look, at least when you compare them to the headphones that came with your smart phones. In each of the Frames' arms is a mini speaker pumping music directly at your ears without being all up in them like typical earbuds (耳塞). On the outside of each arm is another speaker designed to cancel out what the inside one is playing. The end result: music you can hear, and silence anybody nearby can appreciate. Mostly.
Of course, you shouldn't wear these indoors or in a quiet environment, like a library. Bose Frames are essentially wearable speakers, meaning they leak sound, so people nearby can still hear something.
Bose Frames are not for everyone, nor are they great for every situation-sometimes, regular old headphones are more socially appropriate. But once you get over the astonishment that you're wearing a pair of glasses with built-in speakers, you might find them becoming a seasonal addition to you. If you're in the market for sunglasses, and are willing to drop two hundred dollars on a pair, Bose Frames are a solid option for every fashion forward futurist.

From my own experience , once I enter a supermarket, it' s often not easy for me to get out again. A common feature of supermarkets is the one-way entry door; to get back out, you have to walk through a good portion of the store----with its attractive displays of buyables---to find an exit. I am often subjected to this clever arrangement.
After the one-way front door, the first supermarket feature you encounter is the produce department. There’s a good reason for this: the sensory impact of all those good smells and beautiful colors makes us feel both cheerful and hungry. Similarly the store bakery is usually near the entrance with its delicious smell of fresh-baked bread, as is the flower shop, with its buckets of roses and banks of greenery. The message we get right off the bat is that the supermarket is a welcoming place, fresh, natural, fragrant, and healthy.
Plus, dairy departments are almost invariably located as far from the entrance as possible, ensuring that customers-most of whom will have to walk the length of the store, passing a wealth of tempting products, en route (在途中)to the milk, cheese, and yogurt. Especially popular items are routinely located in the middle of aisles (过道),so that even the most single-minded buyer has a chance to be attracted by alternatives. Mid-aisle positioning is intended to sideline the so-called Boomerang Effect, in which some shoppers simply head for the item they need , then return the way they came.
So what to do about all this? Make a list and stick to it. Try not to shop so often and don't shop when you' re hungry. And when it comes to supermarket psychology, know what to look for. Forewarned is forearmed.

For some parents, they have religious (宗教的) reasons for home-schooling. The public school system does not have religious teachings, so these parents want to put religion into the children’s daily school activities. This might include teaching religion-based courses rather than coursework that is taught in public schools.
For some parents, they do not feel that their local school system offers their children the best learning opportunities. So they want to take matters into their own hands. This may be because the local school has low educational standards (标准) or for some other reason the parents think it necessary to take their children out of the system. Sometimes the parents just feel the children will get a better education at home.
Some parents may not be rich enough to send their children to a private school, so the next best thing in their eyes is home-schooling. Thus they can teach their children what they like.
One should remember that the laws about home-schooling vary from state to state. In some states, the parents are required to hand in monthly attendance records (出席记录) to their local school system. What’s more, most states require state testing at certain periods such as the CRCT.

Hidden among the carefully striated (条纹) layers of waste at the local landfill is a potent energy source: methane gas. When it isn’t transformed into something else, methane is an extremely strong pollutant, 82 times as powerful as carbon dioxide. In a lesson about how the energy transition is likely to play out, landfill operators’ ability to make use of excess gas has exploded in recent years. New facilities are being created to convert (转化) trash into renewable natural gas (RNG).
The potential has spurred (刺激) major sanitation and energy companies to break into this new market. In October the British company BP agreed to acquire Archaea Energy, a company that designs, builds and operates RNG plants in the U. S. to convert waste emissions. Archaea produces 6, 000 oil-equivalent barrels (油桶当量) a day through 13 RNG facilities with plans to construct 88 more to serve rising demand. Our only input is trash.
Archaea sells largely to voluntary buyers who wish to lock in clean gas at fair prices. RNG still comes at a high price compared with other fuel sources, but reducing the cost of producing RNG will mean more of it is available to buyers on attractive terms. We are working to lower the price of RNG by creating standardized and modular (模块化的) production facilities with decreased operating costs, higher processing efficiency, and uptime rates that start above 90%. Small-scale breakthroughs in gas processing enabled us to improve the portion of usable natural gas recovered from landfills to 95%, up from an industry standard of 75%.
Some of the predictions in “Back to the Future” proved too far-fetched. Flying cars seem as distant today as they were in the 1980s. But power from trash? Today trash represents a permanent carbon-negative source of natural gas. Voluntary transactions in RNG and the micro-scale process improvements that have boosted this market suggest a far more circular economy on the horizon.
1. According to the passage, which one of the following is true?A.There are high concentrations of carbon methane gas in the waste of landfills. |
B.The burning efficiency of methane is 82 times that of carbon dioxide. |

C.Archaea produces renewable natural gas by importing garbage and some chemical additives |
D.the company is committed to enabling buyers to get more RNG on attractive terms |
A.Optimistic. |
B.Objective. |

The bionic little swimmers have been programmed to wiggle their way through water collecting microplastics as they go. The robofish are only 15mm long. Yet, they can travel quite quickly as they clean. They move by flashing a laser on and off in their tails. It causes the tail to flap side to side which drives the ‘fish’ forward through the water. As they swim along, any nearby microplastics get drawn towards the robots and stick to them.
Not only is their shape inspired by marine life but also is the material they are made out of. Instead of being made out of the traditional materials used for soft robots that can be damaged easily in the water, this one was made from a material that takes inspiration from mother-of-pearl. Mother-of-pearl is found on the inside surface of clam (蛤蜊) shells. As well as attracting microplastics, the material could also heal itself after being cut, still maintaining its ability to absorb microplastics. Because it’s so durable and can swim as fast as it does(for how small it is), the researchers say that it could be used for monitoring microplastics and other pollutants in the hard-to-reach places of complex underwater environments.
Microplastics have been found nearly everywhere. They’ve been found in our oceans, on top of mountains, in some of the food we eat and even in the stomachs of some marine animals. One of the biggest problems with microplastics is, because of their size, they are difficult to clean up. This is especially true of microplastics in the ocean. The scientists hope that their tiny fish-shaped robots can one day help tackle this global problem. At the moment, the robofish are something called proof of concept. It just means that the scientists were able to make something that proves their idea worked.
Now that the team has shown that their idea works, they are going to keep working on it. They hope to create new versions that can dive deeper and absorb more microplastics.

This phenomenon can be traced back before the earliest days of pre-1920s silent film. The fun of seeing an elegant dessert hit an actor, and watching them react with either anger or confusion, soon made its way to the screen. In 1913, Sennett’s “Fatty” launched the first such missile in a Keystone film. Soon, the studio became known for pie-throwing trick, and the high-flying desserts flew so freely that the studio needed its own bakery to make them.
The answer turned out to be right across the street. Sarah Brener owned a variety store there, but she also supplied the studio with its pies. Sometimes, they were delicious. Charlie Chaplin said that Brener’s pies were the best in town. But often, they had to be specially made for films. As pie fights in film grew more complicated, Brener’s bakery was soon making nothing else.
Filmmakers preferred custard (蛋奶沙司) pies for throwing. They were appropriately messy and, likely less painful than a cherry pie would be to the face. But by the time the 1920s rolled around, people had grown tired of them.
Widespread pie-throwing faded, but it didn’t die completely: Comedic films and animation alike have been peppered with pieing ever since, from Bugs Bunny to the Three Stooges. In 2015, a part of film history had been re-discovered: “The Battle of the Century”, where 3,000 pies sailed through the air. It was supposed to be the pie fight to end all others, but in 1965 the film “The Great Race” promised viewers “the greatest pie fight in history.” Thousands of real pies were used.
Now, the Keystone building is a storage facility, and Brener’s bakery is long gone. But the studio’s influence lives on in film, in the occasional throwing of a pie, and on a plate on the corner of the mere remaining building that reads:“This was the birthplace of the motion picture comedy.”

To provide future space travelers with a comfortable shelter, two Dutch architects have built a habitat capable of withstanding the Moon's harsh conditions.
The Lanark, designed by Sebastian Aristotelis and Karl-Johan Sorensen of SAGA Space Architects, is made up of a lightweight, aluminum frame that can be efficiently compressed (压缩) for transport to the Moon. Once the astronauts reach their destination, they can easily unfold the mobile home. 328 solar panels on the frame help recharge the battery, ensuring uninterrupted power, while an airtight flexible seam (接缝) protects residents from temperatures as low as-49°F (-45℃) and wind speeds of up to 55 miles an hour.
Though the physical comforts are impressive, even more so are the features dedicated to the astronauts’ psychological well-being. A weather simulator that uses solar panels and built-in speakers to create varying weather patterns, like storms, rain, and a sunny day, helps ease the loneliness and weariness of conducting repetitive tasks and looking at the same environment for extended amounts of time.
Aristotelis and Sorenson recently put their creation to test in Moriusaq, Greenland. Located in an isolated region of Northern Greenland, the area boasts hurricane-force winds, temperatures of -22°F(-30℃),and 24 hours of darkness during the winter.
The space architects, who spent two months inside the capsule, tried to simulate (模拟) a lunar mission as much as possible. Their daily meals consisted of coffee, cold protein shakes, and hot soups, all made using powdered ingredients and water defrosted from the surrounding ice.
Aristotelis and Srensen say it exceeded their wildest expectations. “The capsule performed really well — we could sustain a comfortable indoor climate even to the very end of the expedition, which got quite a bit colder and windier than we had expected.”

The study examined three different signs of biological aging-early adolescence, cellular aging and changes in brain structure-and found that trauma exposure was associated with all the three.
Exposure to adversity in childhood is a powerful predictor of health outcomes later in life—not only mental health outcomes like depression and anxiety, but also physical health like cardiovascular disease(心血管病), diabetes and cancer," said Katie Mclaugllin, PhD, an associate professor of psychology at Harvard University and senior author of the study published in the journal Psychological Bulletin."Our study suggests that experiencing violence can make the body age more quickly at a biological level, which may help to explain that connection.”
Previous research found mixed evidence on whether childhood adversity is always linked to accelerated aging. However, those studies looked at many different types of adversity abuse, neglect, poverty and more and at several different measures of biological aging. To distinguish the results, McLaughlin and her colleagues decided to look separately at two categories of adversity: threat-related adversity, such as abuse and violence, and deprivation- related(与缺乏有关的) adversity, such as physical or emotional neglect or poverty.
The researchers performed an analysis(分析) of almost 80 studies, with more than 116,000 total participants. They found that children who suffered threat-related trauma such as violence or abuse were more likely to enter adolescence early and also showed signs of accelerated aging on a cellular level—including shortened telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of our strands of DNA that wear down as we age. However, children who experienced poverty or neglect did not show either of those signs of early aging.
In a second analysis, Mclaughlin and her colleagues systematically reviewed 25 studies with more than 3, 253 participants that examined how early-life adversity affects brain development. They found that adversity was associated with reduced cortical (表层) thickness-- a sign of aging because the cortex thins as people age.

Researchers estimate that as much as 40 percent of lizard species worldwide will die out by 2080. The problem is that temperatures in many regions where lizards live have changed too fast for the animals to keep pace.
Barry Sinervo from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California in Santa Cruz, along with colleagues from across the globe, reached that conclusion by taking current data on Mexican lizards. They also estimated that 4 percent of local species have already disappeared worldwide. That number could jump to 20 percent by 2080 if carbon dioxide levels aren’t lowered to reduce warming.
The team looked 48 species of Sceloporus lizard at 200 sites around Mexico. The sites were first sampled from 1975 to 1995. By 2010, research could not find lizards at 12 percent of those sites.
Lizards that bear live young are especially at risk of dying out, the researchers point out, compared to that lay eggs. “Live-bearers have lower body temperatures that heighten the risk of dying,” Sinervo said in a statement. We are watching these species disappear before our eyes.”
Although current evidence shows that climate change is affecting the habitat ranges of many species, there is still a lot of uncertainty about how much climate change will affect species, researchers say.
Many Mexican lizard species live in high altitude “islands”, where climate change happens the fastest. The lizards cannot adjust fast enough to survive. The scientists say they do not think the animals are likely to save themselves just by moving somewhere else either.
“How quickly can Earth’s lizards adapt to the rising global temperatures? That’s the important question,” Sinervo said in a press release. "We are actually seeing lowland species moving upward, slowly driving upland species out of their habitats. If the upland species can’t evolve fast enough, they will die out.”
