Lewis Carroll was the pen-name o£ Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer and author of two of the best loved children's books in English literature — Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. The characters and phrases from these books have entered and become part of the English lexicon (词典) in a way that was comparable to those from Shakespeare's works.
Charles Dodgson was born on January 27,1832 and spent the first eleven years of his life at Warrington. Dodgson was educated first by homeschooling, then at boarding schools in Richmond and at Rugby, and finally at Charist Church College, Oxford. In later life, he remembered his boarding school experience with no fondness. Still, he was an excellent student and did very well academically throughout. For all his brilliance or perhaps because of it, he couldn't be bothered to spend long hours studying and so he didn't. If things came easily, that was fine; if they didn't, well, that doesn't seem to have bothered him overmuch.
His book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland first came into being in 1862 as a story he made up for Alice Liddell, the ten-year-old daughter of his friend Dean Henry Liddell. Later he wrote it down and showed the book, illustrated with his own drawings, to another friend, the fairy tale writer George Macdonald and his children. They loved it and enthusiastically urged him to get it published. Accordingly, Dodgson revised it for publication. And in 1865, with illustrations more professionally done by Sir John Tenniel, it became an immediate bestseller. Its sequel (续集) Through the Looking-Glass proved equally popular.

To study abroad after my graduation, I could not stop seeking my dream. To take the first step, I did some brainstorming and explored opportunities on the Internet and finally decided to go for China. There were a number of reasons behind it - its advanced education system and thousands of centuries of rich culture inspired me to study there. The primary one was my curiosity how a nation has left many nations behind in a short time at its fast pace of development.
So just like that, I applied, along with some of my friends, for a master's degree program at Communication University of China. I was the only one who got selected in the said program and in addition, the Chinese Scholarship Council sponsored all of my expenses. This good news was welcomed by my family.
This is my seventh month in Beijing. In my experience so far, one thing that appeared to be missing was the internship (实习)which I tried to find because I want to work here after completion of my studies. After some struggles I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work as an intern with the Center for China and Globalization (CCG). It' s very exciting to work on their team as a researcher. Now I can proudly say that my decision to choose China as a study destination was the best decision I have ever made.

In March 2022, 16-year-old Rutherford took off on his adventure. He flew a Shark, a high-performance ultralight (超轻型的) aircraft. His journey around the world tested him in the skies through monsoons (季风) and extreme temperatures. Rutherford’s longest flight on this journey was from Japan to the U. S., which took him 10 hours over water. The highest altitude he had to face was 12, 500 feet over Mexico. He flew across four continents, 30 countries.
After everything, Rutherford landed safely in Sofia on August 24. He arrived home to discover he’d broken two Guinness world records: he is the youngest person ever to fly around the world solo, and also the youngest person to do it in an ultralight aircraft. But he surprised the world by becoming the youngest pilot ever at age 15, when he received his microlight pilot’s license.
This incredible achievement at such a young age is certainly worth celebrating and his family might be the perfect people to fully appreciate it. Rutherford’s father is a professional pilot. This sparked an interest in aviation (飞行) for the young Rutherford since he was 11. And Rutherford’s sister, Zara Rutherford, recently completed a similar solo journey and holds her own world record as the youngest female pilot to complete a solo flight around the world.
“I’m very happy to complete my five-month journey around the world,” Rutherford said. “It took a bit longer than it was supposed to, but everything is fine. I’m trying to show that young people can do something special and make a difference; just follow their dreams and they’ll eventually come true.”
1. Which word can best describe Rutherford’s flying journey?A.Smooth. |

The day after everyone cleared out I noticed that the drain stopper(排水塞)was missing from downstairs bathroom sink.
The last thing you want to do is accuse your own fresh and blood of stripping hardware from your bathroom, but a drain stopper doesn’t just wash itself down the drain.
So I sent out a carefully-worded e-mail saying what a wonderful time we had and asking if anyone had accidently tucked a drain stopper in a purse, pocket or suitcase. I even attached a picture of a drain stopper in case there was any doubt as to what the missing part looked like.
Our son responded that he thought his 10-month-old might have eaten it. He said he’d let us know if they found it in the next day of two.
Our youngest daughter responded that she thought she saw it in her husband’s lunchbox that morning, but she could be wrong.
Our oldest daughter replied that she had suspected her sister’s husband all along. He replied that he had been framed.
Our oldest daughter then checked the guilt of one of her twins with following exchange:
Mommy: “Do you know where Grandma’s drain stopper is?”
Three-year-old: “Yeah, let me show you.” (Heads to the bathroom.)
Mommy: “No, not ours, where is Grandma’s? Did you take it?”
Three-year-old: “I think she took it.” (She points at her 18-month-old baby sister). “She’s a naughty kid.”
Naturally, the 18-month-old defended herself by saying: “Bububbubnananabublalala!”
The next day, an email arrived from our daughter-in-law. “Guess what I found in my laundry this morning? I thought the dryer was louder last night.”
Our “perp” was short. He has a known history of building and disassembling, is mechanically inclined, determined and just turned 3.
It’s always good to know a child’s interests and talents. We have a valve(阀门)that occasionally drips under the kitchen sink. I may have him take a look at it the next time he’s here. But I’ll pat him down before he leaves.

Hughes’s children’s books immediately stand out from the rest. Every single page presents a work of impressive artistic quality. In an age when many children’s books rely on cheap computer graphics(绘图),it’s refreshing to discover an illustrator who obviously labored, with deep attention to detail, over every page.
It’s not just the illustrative talent and distinctive style, using pen and ink and watercolor to “fill ordinary domestic scenes with a mixture of magic”, that sets Hughes’s works apart. She was also an expert storyteller. That’s not because her stories are particularly imaginative. Rather, perhaps, it’s the simplicity and normality of the stories that make them so pleasing to kids and parents alike.
Take Dogger, one of Hughes’s earlier books, published in 1977, which sold millions of copies and won Britain’s Kate Greenaway Medal. Dogger is the story of Dave, a young boy who loses his beloved stuffed dog named Dogger. Much of what makes Dogger and the rest of Hughes’s books so engaging is that the stories are told from the perspective of the child encountering everyday events. Hughes has a special skill for drawing wonder out of what we often assume to be boring and uninteresting.
Though I have a graduate degree in education, I never would have expected my children to love these stories. My best guess is that it is because Hughes’s books talk to them about the kinds of things they witness and experience daily. By extension, these books tell them in reassuring tones that, yes, their little world with all of its people and curiosities is quite interesting indeed.
Perhaps much of the reason I’ve so taken to reading Shirley Hughes to my own children is that it reminds me of what the world looked like when I too was a little boy.

William Shakespeare was born in 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon, a small town in England. He went to a local school as a boy. When he was 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway. Within three years, they had three children. But Shakespeare wanted more from life; he longed to be in the theatre.
Shakespeare joined a travelling acting company. His family stayed in Stratford. The acting group went from town to town performing plays. During that time, Shakespeare began writing his own plays and poems.
By 1594, Shakespeare owned part of the company. In 1599, Shakespeare’s company opened the Globe Theatre, a huge circle with a stage and balconies. Royalty and other rich people sat in the balconies. Common folks crowded into an open courtyard in front of the stage.
Although Shakespeare's theatre looked like other theatres of his time, his plays were different. Unlike many plays written before, in Shakespeare's plays characters behave like real people. They have good qualities, and they have weaknesses.
Some of Shakespeare’s plays are tragedies-serious stories in which sad things happen. But the way Shakespeare wrote has allowed audiences to understand characters’ problems. In the play Romeo and Juliet, terrible things happen to the young lovers whose families hate each other. Shakespeare’s plays make people laugh, too. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, fairies fool with humans' romances, creating some funny scenes.
The language in Shakespeare's plays sounds strange to our modern ears. But people spoke differently 400 years ago. One reason that his language sounds different is Shakespeare's fondness for rhyme. And even when the words don't rhyme, they have a rhythm, or beat.
Shakespeare was an artist, and words were his medium. He played with words until he got them to say just the right thing. And if existing words weren’t right, Shakespeare made up new ones.
Before his death in 1616, Shakespeare had written 37 plays and more than 100 poems. Many are still favourites today; some have been made into movies. Audience love listening to Shakespeare's beautiful language. And they still identify with his characters’ problems and their emotions.

B.Shakespeare’s plays made people think and laugh. |
C.Shakespeare’s plays included tragedies and comedies. |
