Beijing: Beijing is to spend up to US $20 billion to change the Chinese capital into a 21st century one for the 2008 Olympics.

The government managed to host the 2008 games. The general aim is for Beijing to have the same environmental standards as Paris, London or Washington by 2008.

Hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent to pipe natural gas to the city’s homes, taking away dirty coal burning gradually while 60,000 buses will be changed to liquefied gas.

The money also will be used for relocating the polluting factories and building green areas. By 2008 around 90 percent of Beijing’s waste will be treated, compared to only 40 percent at present.

Olympic officials realize the city has a long way to go to match the environmental standards of such cities as Paris, Toronto, Istanbul and Osaka.

City officials have already announced that around 50 large projects are being dealt with to improve traffic jam and cut down pollution. They include construction of Beijing’s first light railway, a 40.5 kilometer line which is expected to be completed in 2005.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。肯尼亚北部地区的旱灾威胁到一些动物的生存。

【推荐2】Officials in Kenya say severe drought conditions in a northern area have killed hundreds of wild animals in recent months. Many animals that do survive are starving and weak. They often come in contact with people while searching for food. Kenya’s Samburu County has experienced a lack of rain for the past four years. This has caused some of the severest dry conditions in 40 years. Experts say the effects of climate change have worsened the problem.

Officials say drought has killed at least 200 elephants, nearly 400 common zebras and more than 500 antelopes over the past 9 months. A number of other species have also been affected. Kenya’s government has provided some emergency supplies such as water, grass and mineral salts to help the animals. But many creatures are still found moving into areas where people live as they search for food and water.

David Lepeenoi is a 54-year-old man who lives in Samburu. He said that elephants seem to be drawn to the trees he planted on his property. “The trees and water points are the main source of conflict between elephants and the community,” he said. “Where we have reported cases of wildlife dying, it is not actually within the parks,” said Jim Nyamu. He helps run the Elephant Neighbors Center, a nonprofit group that seeks to protect elephants and their surroundings. Nyamu says the fact that animals are not dying in parks suggests they are looking for food in established areas blocked by humans.

Records from the conservation group BirdLife Africa show that many birds are also dying in northern Kenya, most likely from starvation. The group’s Alex Ngari says the remains of migratory birds can be seen across expanses of the very dry land. Over 300 bird species on the continent are already considered threatened or critically endangered.

The drought has also greatly harmed communities and has led to lost income, farm animal deaths and failed crops. Farmers have started taking down dried trees to produce and sell wood to earn money.

A.By listing data.B.By quoting sayings.

2. What do we know about animals in the parks?
A.They’re secure.B.They’re threatened.
C.They’re harming humans.D.They’re destroying trees in the community.
3. What do the birds suffer from according to BirdLife Africa?
A.Thirst.B.Hunting.
C.Lack of food.D.Loss of care.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Kenya Has Experienced Drought for 40 Years
B.Drought in Northern Kenya Threatens Animals
C.Wildlife Survives a Dry Area in Northern Kenya
D.Kenya Faces Conflict Between Humans and Animals

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要讲述国际自然保护联盟(IUCN)将中国白鲟列入其濒危物种名单,所以号召人们紧急行动起来,防止更多淡水物种的消失。

【推荐3】The International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) added the Chinese paddlefish (白鲟) to its list of threatened species in July, 2022. People will never see a living Chinese paddlefish again as it has been declared extinct. For many people in China, this might be the first time they had heard the name of the fish that was once a denizen(栖息者) of the Yangtze River Basin.

The fish is thought to have been around since about 200 million years ago. It was among the world’s biggest freshwater species and could grow up to 7.5 meters in length. The last time the fish was spotted was in 2003 in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in Yibin, Sichuan Province. It was an injured female sturgeon(鲟鱼). After local people treated its wounds, it was released into the river.

According to the IUCN, the global sturgeon reassessment found that 100 per cent of the remaining 26 sturgeon species in the world are now at risk of extinction, up from 85 per cent in 2009. Their decline over the past three generations is steeper than previously thought.

“The extinction of the Chinese paddlefish should be a warning to everyone,” said Zhou Fei, China’s chief program officer at the World Wide Fund for Nature. “It has provided an opportunity for conservation experts to raise public awareness about the urgency of protecting freshwater species in the Yangtze River Basin and educate the public on the need for more efforts to save other species living in the region from extinction,” he added.

To prevent further loss of freshwater species in China, people must act urgently. There is no time to waste. Also, long-term threats to their life and habitats must be eliminated by taking systematic protection measures. The protection of biodiversity will delay the extinction of some species. It’s not something that can be achieved by certain departments. Instead, it requires joint efforts from all sectors of society.

1. What did the IUCN announce in 2022?
A.The extinction of the Chinese paddlefish.
B.A ban on overfishing in freshwater lakes.
C.A new list of freshwater fish species in China.
D.The discovery of a rare species in the Yangtze River.
2. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A.To present the diversity of freshwater species.
B.To stress the key role of sturgeon in the ecosystem.
C.To offer some information about the Chinese paddlefish.
D.To show the difficulty of protecting the Chinese paddlefish.
3. What can we learn from Zhou Fei’s words?
A.It is challenging for the public to save endangered species.
B.The loss of freshwater species results in serious consequences.
C.The extinction of the Chinese paddlefish reflects the need to protect freshwater species.
D.The number of sturgeon species has been decreasing sharply in recent years globally.
4. What does the underlined word “eliminated” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Ignored.B.Removed.
C.Restored.D.Protected.
